Sheffield is a city located in the northern region of England, in the county of South Yorkshire. It is the third-largest metropolitan area in the UK, with a population of over 580,000 people. Sheffield is known for its rich industrial heritage, as it was once a major centre of steel production and manufacturing.
Today, Sheffield is a diverse and vibrant city with a thriving economy and a rich cultural scene. The city is home to two major universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, which attract thousands of students each year.
One of the most distinctive features of Sheffield is its geography. The city is situated in a valley, surrounded by hills and the Peak District National Park to the west. The River Sheaf runs through the city centre, and the River Don also flows through the city, providing picturesque views and opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and fishing.
The city is also known for its green spaces, with over 200 parks and gardens throughout the area. The largest and most famous of these is the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, which boasts a stunning collection of plant life from around the world.
In terms of culture, Sheffield has a thriving arts scene, with a number of galleries, theatres and music venues. The Crucible Theatre is a renowned venue for theatre and the performing arts, and has hosted productions of major plays and musicals. The city is also known for its music scene, with a number of famous bands hailing from Sheffield, including the Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and Def Leppard.
Sheffield is also home to a number of museums and historic landmarks, including the Kelham Island Museum, which tells the story of Sheffield's industrial heritage, and the Sheffield Cathedral, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture.

I lived in Sheffield for five years, but moved to Lancashire in 1995, and so much of it is different, and yet at the heart of it all the old buildings are there too.
I loved my time there, and the quirks it has, like the library lends works of art, huge canvases along with the usual things like books, records and maps.

My father's paternal side is from Sheffield, coming to Australia in the early 1900s. My grandfather is the last of our line born in England. I visited Sheffield briefly a decade ago, but plan to spend several days here next year. One place I’ll spend time is the General cemetery where my g.g.grandfather is buried, and Thornhill, Dewsbury, where St Michael's Church has memorials to our ancestors. This is a wonderful video, opening up a city I'm looking forward to getting to know.

lovely to see Sheffield growing again. i grew up in Sheffield, as a young girl stood on Sheffield Cathedral steps with my school mates and sang Christmas songs, 1960,s. It has changed so much i hardly recognize Sheffield anymore it still has its landmarks i can recognize. Fargate was so busy the crowds made it hard to walk about.

@lynmeadon4719 Hi! By any chance did you know a chorister called Michael Wood? He would've been singing here (I believe) about this time. His grandmother Elsie was an aunt of my paternal grandfather, and I'm trying to locate family before a visit over to the UK next year. Michael's father was Ben Wood, named after his grandfather.

I’ve lived in Sheffield all my life and never seen some of these places so thank you, great video!! It has made me more optimistic about town and regeneration, with a little joined up logic from the council theres real potential here, its just a pity that areas already regenerated like that beautiful area of castlegate next to the don get hardly any footfall, because what tourists or inquisitive locals are going to want to walk through the mess of fargate, castlegate and (improved, but still nothing to shout about) fitzalan square? That, and for people in the suburbs the city centre just isn’t as accessible as meadowhall due to lack of cycling infrastructure outside of the city centre, lack of free parking in town (arguably fair enoigh but-) and lack of reliable, convenient public transport to get us there. So here’s to completing that regeneration, filling retail units and extending the tram network!!

The reason thar the Moor and Fargate looked so crowded in the 50s & 60s is that everyone had to walk on the pavements as the roads were open to frantic including buses and up to 1960, the trams.
Now these streets are fully pedestrianised, there is much more room to walk about.

The city has gone through a massive transformation over the last couple of decades and has had a massive amount of money invested in it. For me, Sheffield city centre is average. It still has a long way to go, and new projects seem to take forever to get going/be completed. I was also disappointed with a few of the recent square "upgrades". All very lacklustre, IMHO. Must try harder, Sheffield.

That's unfair the centre was awful before and it's much better now

      It's great I think.
Ok it's not busy but safe and clean. You can't blame the city for people going to parkgate and Meadowhall.
There's everything I want there and good pubs , so couldn't ask for much more.

@@linndrumfan1959 I think we get a picture of other cities being better.
But I've lived in a few and they are struggling much the same. A few are much worse.
Only the likes of Manchester, Birmingham, London seem to thrive and have a lot of high rise buildings.
