You can use an 8wt thread to do crochet with beads. The type of material depends on how you want it to look, but either a cotton or rayon thread would work (depending on if you want a matte or shiny look).
Not at all, many people use trilobal polyester for machine embroidery and some even prefer it over rayon. They are both designed to be used in machine embroidery, it just depends on your preference.
