  • Families of children with autism face a tough road when the services of high school programs end at age 21, and parents are often compelled to take on even more care than ever.
For Heidi Roger and her 18-year-old son Andrew, the prospect of "aging out," while still a few years away, is a question mark looming large over their future.

I applaud these women for not giving up on their kids. Some mothers are truly noble for the sake of their children.

thanks you for your great attitude I needed my anxiety dialed down and reading your comment made me smile In a loving way; I hope no one thinks I’m being disrespectful or making fun of anyone ! I’m right here with these parents : worried about a young adult, I love with my whole heart and soul (my son)
Also, the comment is right on the money! Miss Patty is a beautiful woman and such a patient and loving person as well! How I so wish my son had a teacher like that when he was growing up we don’t live in New York there’s not a lot of people who understand autism once you get outside of the bigger cities in the US there are some exceptions but there’s just a handful certainly not enough for all the individuals who were not sent to institutions when they were toddlers for preschoolers as the generations before ours did. As they were advised by the child’s physicians who had a paternalistic “posture” towards patients our great grandparents, and our grandparents didn’t ask doctors why something needed to be done they just said “OK, If you say that’s what we have to do then I guess that’s what we’ll do.”
Ex. I can’t tell you how many times I came to pick my son up from an afterschool program or a summer day camp and I’d ask for him by name and I remember hearing an employee say “Oh the artistic kid!”... good grief… Just remembering those experiences make my stomach flip flop 🙄

While I'm glad that you included Dr. Grandin, I think it would have been good to include others who are elsewhere on the spectrum as well. Because even us "high functioning" autistics often face challenges when we reach adulthood. The extremely high unemployment rate being one of them.
And we end up with another problem: most if the services are for minors/youth, and those that do exist for adults are pretty much only for "low functioning" autistics. So we're too autistic for the NTs, but we're not autistic enough for the service providers.

God this is sad. I have two 26-year-old Aspergian friends who aged out of services. One lives with his parents and collects SSI and the other lives in a group home.

I feel bad for Andrew and his mom. This is just a nightmare to me live like this. My 4 year old nephew is autistic and he talks and acts just like Andrew. He is still pretty young and he is getting ot, speech therapy and abn. Professionals say my nephew has a high-functional autism. My family hopes he will be independent eventually. However watching Andrew freaks me out. What if my nephew won't improve and will be like Andrew when he is 18. Because right now he acts just like Andrew.

Uhhh... what cure? What incredible advance of medicine are "they" hiding from us that can cure a complex and highly variable neurological disability (but somehow there's not a cure for anything else that complex)? Please don't tell me you're an anti-vaxxer type.
