Yeah let's just be realistic this mission was horrible it was one of the biggest waste of times I've ever seen it was a garbage mission I think everyone hated it in look up code on how to skip it because let's just be honest it's probably 1 the most difficult annoying stupid repetitive missions as I Hey we sent it a special task force you know instead of taking something useful like a tie fighter and Imperial Walker anything not a steal the slowest moving smallest Imperial walkers that are basically walking tissue boxes

From what I gleaned, the commandos had their cover blown and were making a desperate break for safety with whatever limited resources they had on hand.
I also presumed that the alliance operated under a "no man left behind" strategy in contrast to the empire who deemed their troops as utterly expendable.
Finally, do you know if speeders register on radar or sensor equipment more than a starfighter would? A potential advantage for speeders could be that they're able to sneek in close to the mission area before making their presence known.

@@Antidragon-nl7by Actually The rebels did actually use strategies especially legends where they would leave people to die if they were going to Lose more resources to rescue them in fact there been more than one suicide missions were people agreed to be Left Behind if they'd had to and as for it using equipment on hand ya I agree but it still they could you stole a walk or something anything would have been better than those 3 slow moving target and finally snow speeders really don't go on the radar they don't have stealth when Built-in and is hardly know they're just civilians armed and have reinforced armor that's about it yes the tow cable does help but overall I think X wings and Y wings would been better

That level took me a few tries when I was younger to beat but I'm a dark souls player now so maybe I just like a challenge lol.
I'm kinda curious though, did the rebellion have a designated ground attack starfighter? Or was the ground attack role limited to air speeders?

The way my mind always imagined it was that the commandos were there for another reason and simply used the AT-PTs to make their escape. You're there to make sure they survive. I know you said it would be better to leave them behind, but perhaps they accomplished their goal and were carrying secret Imperial plans. Or maybe they didn't want those commandos to be sacrificed. Or maybe the AT-PTs were going to be essential to a later operation. Tyderium wasn't really all that valuable on its own, but it was still a big effort to steal that. Or maybe in an upcoming mission, the Alliance needed to navigate tight, narrow spaces with steep slopes. For a mission like that, the AT-PT is second to none.

@@gundamnexus-dk8yi But as Eck pointed out, the AT-AT wouldn't be able to stand up to an attack from a Y-Wing. Or, really, any other starfighter that had warhead launchers. The only reason the speeders were able to do it at Hoth was because Luke came up with that tripping attack using the tow cables, which still relies heavily on luck that the speeder won't be shot down during its predictable flight pattern while circling the AT-AT to wrap the cable around it. The X-Wings would have actually been much more useful at Hoth - fly out, take down the walkers with a torpedo or two, then escort the transports out under the protection of the ion cannon. Really, the Alliance just grabs ahold of the Idiot Ball whenever AT-ATs show up. it's like they deliberately choose THE absolute worst possible tactics for dealing with them, then wonder why their half-assed plan didn't work.

Of all the missions in Rogue Squadron, this is the one that stuck with me the longest. It was frustrating to a nine year old, demanding a lot of skill in little time. To this day, I can remember replaying it over and over, because AT-PTs were easily wiped out by the AT-ATs, and if you didn't rush to the first segment of the mission, the first AT-AT would wreck one of them before you had a chance to rescue it. I had no idea as a kid why three commandos were stealing AT-PTs and not something far more valuable like an AT-AT. I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated this level.

  • @Utsubu
    @Utsubu 4 роки тому +1

In Rogue Squadron if a mission has AT-ATs, you can't fly as anything other than Snowspeeders because it's basically impossible to destroy them without tripping them with tow cables. This makes sense on an internally consistent level as all missions with AT-ATs have their destruction as prerequisites to completion with the sole exception of Imperial Construction Yards. It has AT-ATs but you don't need to destroy them to win, yet still requires you to use Snowspeeders.
As for the AT-PTs themselves I always rationalized it as commandos just being on a mission, getting caught, and attempting to escape using the AT-PTs so it's more of a rescue mission of the men themselves, however admittedly the briefing, opening cutscene ("-attempting to liberate a squad of AT-PTs."), and comms chatter really imply the importance of the AT-PTs themselves so I'm not sure. It is baffling one would waste resources on three patrol walkers.

Yeah in Isard's Revenge, Rogue Squadron take out at-at's with x-wing cannons. Sure by that point firepower has increased, but you have to imagine the cannons on x-wings at this period in history would still do meaningful damage... much less what a y-wing bomb would do. The mission was basically just an excuse to bust out snowspeeders because when else are you going to use them.

I was always under the impression that the commandos were there to steal research data and commendeered the AT-PTs as a means of escape when things went balls up. Which does make sense. The AT-ATs were probably more heavily guarded and harder to get to than the smaller walkers which also due to their smaller size and only having a crew of one probably made them easier to steal.

Unless you play it PERFECTLY it all goes horribly wrong horribly quickly. I lost count of how many times I just ended up straffing the last two AT-PTs just to end the level quickly. Rinse and repeat. Rinse and repeat. RINSE AND...

The Fest mission is tough af but is still possible to beat saving all 3 AT-PTs. 1. You gotta be quick and focused, no exploring and only destroying the designated targets for the 1st part. 2. Hold down that A button for constant acceleration. 3. When destroying the tanks give yourself distance between yourself and the tanks with the break on and keep your aim steady and make your shots count. 4. Sometimes the 1st AT-AT might sometimes destroy 1 of the AT-PTs just abort the mission and start over if you want all 3 to survive.

Use of a harpoon and tow cable to take down an ATAT is a tactic you would expect to work once and only once. Literally all the ATAT pilot would need to do is stop moving until troopers dropped out the walker and cut the cables. And yet so many Star Wars games (not just Rogue Squadron) act like this is the only possible way of ever taking down an ATAT.

Star Wars games like to pretend that T-47s are the best (and sometimes even only) weapon against AT-ATs - that's why they're in the mission - but in reality, they're the worst thing you can throw at an AT-AT. This is why they had to use the harpoon tactic, after all. It was a desperate tactic.

I don't think I ever actually did complete that mission myself. It really was a hard one.
The only reason why the Snowspeeder used for that mission, as far as I can tell, is because in that game the AT-AT's are functionally invincible to your normal weapons and they can only be disabled by using the Tow Cable. And, there are several missions in this game aside from the famous Battle of Hoth where you must pilot a Snowspeeder, because in all of these there will be AT-ATs that you will have to deal with. This includes the.... Defection at Corellia and the raid on an Imperial TIE fighter and walker production facility.

Hey Ecks, I have my own star destroyer that I think is overall, very useful. I call it the Inferno-Class. It’s about 3 kilometers long, has about 500 point defense laser cannons all along the hull including some near the engines, 200 dual turbo lasers, 50 Quad turbo lasers, around 100 light ion cannons and 70 heavy ion cannons. Its bridge is among the superstructure, and I makes use of shield projectors in the trenches and does not have a hangar to make space for a secondary reactor. If you see this please tell me what you think.

You had to haul ass and hope that whatever walking pattern the AT PT's took and that the aim of the AT-AT was off just to have enough time to save them all. Then you had to stop those bombers from dropping a SINGLE bomb just to be on the safe side.

    So this kinda like:
Allied Command: The Germans have a new variant of the Panzer IV, we're going to send the best pilots in the RAF to help some SOE agents steal them from a heavily fortified compound deep inside the Reich.
RAF: So what so special about these tanks?
AC: Their slightly longer than a regular Pz IV.
RAF: Okay.... We'll send some Mosquito's to soften up the ground defenses and keep the AA busy, then once SOE inserts we'll have a couple of Squadrons of Spitfires keep the Luftwaffe at, then once SOE's clear we'll follow up with some Lancasters to destroy the facility, sound good?
AC: Oh no, no your going to escort the tanks whilst every mildly annoyed German takes a shot at them
RAF.... at least tell me we'll be flying something that can take a hit, like a Typhoon, or a Mustang.
AC: No, you going to be in Gloster Gladiators.

5:21 no y-wings required. T47s don't have lasers, they have blasters, that's why they are unable to get past an AT-AT's armor. An x-wing's lasers are more than capable of shredding the walkers, as shown in the movie Rogue One, as well as Isard's Revenge, and other novels (but i couldn't tell you which ones of the top of my head)

Best way to do this mission is to immediately veer right and blow up the shield, fly over and tie the walker by it. Zoom over and tie the other walker on the path to the shuttle, and then hit the base if you have enough time before rogue squadron breaks the gate for you. You can completely ignore the walker that's attacking them originally, it will never have a proper angle on them and they'll get away with little to no scratches

Given how terrible the mission goal was, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out the mission itself was a cover for something more sinister that command wanted to keep secret from even their own men. Like the walkers themselves were laden with crates of spice and someone needed them to pay off his/her debts or fund the Alliance's efforts.
"Who cares if this makes no sense? We must acquire the cargo, no matter the risk."
"But sir... all we have available is a few snow speeders and..."
"Then deploy THEM! I--err, WE NEED THAT SPICE."

The snowspeeder is the only thing that can take out the ATAT in Rogue Squadron. They wanted a snowspeeder mission in each chapter. Hence Fest. Yes in reality the mission could have been handled differently, but this is done in game terms. Also I believe they were there for something else (It is a research station after all) and used the ATPT's to escape as they are the quickest walker. (At least in game.)

@Trey Stephens I don't know what's so hard to understand. The "planet" includes its atmosphere, which reaches up into space. The ground of the planet is not in space, in the same way the core of the planet is not in the planet's atmosphere.

One thing that really bothered me, and made the mission much harder - the AT-PTs charge ahead like Leeroy Jenkins, never waiting for you to kill the AT-ATs. God, I hated this mission. I ended up using a hack to get around it - got gold medals legitimately on all the other levels.
What I think would have been cool would be a shuttle escort mission, have the engines get damaged or something so it has to fly slowly.

  • @sentrysapper45
    @sentrysapper45 4 роки тому

The reason for the use of T-47s is obvious from a gameplay perspective; the devs made AT-ATs invulnerable to all weapons except the tow cable maneuver. But yeah, from a lore perspective it makes no sense; other sources like the X-Wing novels clearly demonstrate that starfighters are capable of destroying AT-ATs with warheads like proton torpedoes.
As for the AT-PTs, that's a product of inconsistent lore. The game manual indicates that they're a hot new Imperial design, despite other sources stating their Clone Wars-era origin. I think the devs just wanted a cool looking "mini-walker" in the game, and they figured the AT-PT was obscure enough that most people wouldn't notice the discrepancy. My headcanon for the incident is that these particular AT-PTs were testbeds for some new experimental tech. The Alliance wanted what the walkers were carrying, not the walkers themselves.

  • @westrim

Two other things to consider in your arguments:
First is that you could reverse engineer the at-pt by stealing them. So your "steal the plans" is still essentially accomplished by this.
Second is... with the design being that old, there have to be other plans out there on the holonet. Meaning rebels could pretty much hack, black market purchase, or otherwise obtain the info to make their own at-pt's with much less risk.
So no, but actually yes to your argument.

Wouldn't be surprised if the T-47 had some limited maneuvering thrusters and were heat resistant enough to drop themselves into the atmosphere and control their descent until their repulsorlifts become operational. Would be especially cool as a kind of hotshot Alliance modification so that they could be deployed to the surface without a transport.

The mission is right outside a downed Star Destroyer, it's all good until you have to use a Y-Wing to destroy a horde of those things coming out of the SD. But it's so hard to see them! I always had to wait til they were on the beach, but the transport you were defending was so fragile sometimes that was too late.
