she's BRILLIANT - i love Helena's portrayal of Anne Boleyn; she really gets the arrogance, the wit and the education; not just the sexiness/beauty. Natalie Portman has nothing on her! x x
Ray Winston plays Henry like an East End barrow boy and a heavily pregnant Bonnam Carter playing Anne with all the charm and fascination of a beached whale completes this farce. Since the entire story concerns Henry's need for a son it is truly laughable. How the rest of the cast kept there faces straight I shall never know.
With all the research I've done and how many Anne Boleyn performances I've watched in the last few days, I'm pretty sure Natalie Dormer gives one of the best ever portrayals of Anne. Her characterization seems most accurate, but that's a matter in which acting and writing work together, I suppose...
There are very big gaps in this version of Henry VIII's life - the 7 year courtship of Anne and all the letters he wrote begging her to be his mistress. The fall of Wolsey was a long drawn out affair, Anne had 2 and possibly 3 miscarriages, there were 2000 spectators at her trial and she carried herself with extreme dignity and was not disrespectful or sparring with her judges but gave such "wise discreet answers to the charges" it was thought she would be found not guilty. And Anne did agree to the annulment of her marriage and the bastardizing of her daughter, in return for her life. She was promised she would be sent to a nunnery. They lied and tricked her. The swordsman of Calais had been sent for even before her trial started
So true. For a film it's giving a very good overview of the situation. Like even if you knew nothing about the Tutors you'd easily be able to follow this movie
Anne was not arrested until 3 months after this miscarriage. And Norfolk had nothing to do with it. Nobody gave Anne's father any warning and he was so petrified he never even tried to stand up for his son and daughter. In fact he was one of the jurors at their trials and found both guilty. Henry was a sadistic bastard to make him do that.
It's been recycled a few times. It was worn later in the Tudors by Anne of Cleves when she came to court for Xmas and befriended new queen Catherine Howard, and it was worn in the BBC series The Virgin Queen with Ann Marie Duff as Queen Elizabeth in her scene opening Parliament.
That's his wife, Jane Rochford. She was jealous because George was always at court and apparently was quite a lady's man so she was easily persuaded to give false evidence against Anne.
Henry and everyone else at court knew the queen had no opportunity for affairs. She had guards outside her door and her ladies slept in her room. She was never alone. When Catherine Howard attempted to have an affair with Culpepper she had to get her ladies to cover for her, especially Lady Rochford, that traitor. And she was arrested for enabling the secret meetings but not only her, many of Catherines relatives were arrested and interrogated as well. Yet none of Anne's ladies were.......she could not have committed adultery even one time without their help......
Anne did not know her brother or any of the other accused men had been arrested until she had been incarcerated for some time, and she herself was not arrested until 3 months after her final miscarriage
things Anne did. Like, that was one of them I didn't agree with. But the whole being ambitious enough so she could be queen, I'm like, well...she kind of had too.
You are wrong...Henry started it all by interfering with her life...but in the end ANN WON...with ELIZABETH I...INCOMPARABLE MONARCH!!! HER BLOOD WAS WELL SPENT IN THE END!!!
Elizabeth left the country bankrupt with her mostly unspoken of invasion to Spain and permanently closed the path to prevent religious wars when she brought England back into the Protestant cause (which by the way meant she withdrew her claim to the throne since Mary's testament said she could have it 'so long as she remains a good Catholic Queen'.)
I think the only reason everybody likes Natalie Dormer in the Anne Boleyn role is because she is so beautiful. She's a good actress too, but personally, I don't think she fits the role. Oh well :) I do think physically Helena is more fitting.
History tells us that Henry believed Anne was guilty, but in this film, it's like he felt guilty for ordering her execution. Maybe I'm wrong, but the look on his face in this scene tells me that he actually did believe her innocence (in this film, not in real life). He may have still ordered her execution, but I can tell he feels some regret doing so.
No one knows what Henry knew or believed. I always liked David Starkey's version....that Henry chose to accept her guilt because it suited his purpose. He was always a pragmatist.
divorcing Catherine of Aragon. I mean, everyone has their own opinions on Anne Boleyn. but at the same time, I can't hhelp but think, if you were in her position, and you were trying to be queen, what would you have done? You couldn't have been a push over. There were times when Anne Boleyn was cruel. There are surviving letters, where Anne wrote to her ladies in waiting to slap her stepdaughter, Mary, if she ever addressed herself as Princess Mary. I don't agree with certain
She knows her deaths already inevitable and there’s nothing she could do or say to change it yet she gives it her all to try and make some sort of difference
Obviously. I'm a huge Helena Bonham Carter fan. I do really love her historical films, but as far as Annes go, I think Natalie Dormer actually out-did Helena on this one. It saddens me to say it, but this execution speech=not so good. We'll blame the writer and the director instead (:
Besides, I think this Henry is more like a real Henry with the red hair and all and not an athletic body type.. JRM doesn't look like a Henry at all...a lot of people think JRM is too handsome to be Henry, but I actually think this Henry is better looking, despite not having JMR's athletic body..I never cared much for JRM, though he is a great actor..
A lot of shows, especially in Hollywood, where it's based on historical times, will always change how the person really was. On the other hand, we will never know what Anne Boleyn was like. I don't think she was an evil whore though. I think, like most people, she was doing what everyone did, if they were really ambitious. Back then, to gain respect, you kind of had to be really aggressive, ambitious, and in your face. To get to the top, a lot of the times, you had to do stuff that told
At least this Henry feels some regret..I like this Henry better than the Henry portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Myers..don't get me wrong, on the whole I hate Henry in every way, but JRM's portrait of Henry has not even a little sympathetic thing in it, he was just like a screaming and spoiled child all the time when he didn't get his way, and he didn't even show any feelings at Anne's death..
Not everybody thinks Natalie Dormer is beautiful, though I am not one of them ( I think she's stunning ), there are enough people who think she has a weird face and ugly nose.. Therefore I do think she makes a great Anne Boleyn, since Anne Boleyn was also considered beautiful in her time by some and by others not so..she didn't have a usual kind of beauty.. Helena is a great Anne Boleyn too btw, can't choose between them, I love them both! As I love both actresses
Ha ha...during the initial television release, I really disliked Nathalie's nose...I thought she looked like a piggy. I have since bought the series, and have really fallen under her spell. Now, I find her to be very attractive. My dad and I used to poke fun at her looks every week when we got together to watch The Tudors.

Anne would not have worn her hair loose in court- I do wish they;d pay more attention to " historical" details in historical films
She might have if she were wearing a crown.
The inaccurate history in this particular movie is almost painful, however not bad entertainment wise.

It would all have been avoided if they'd just let her marry Lord Percy in the first place.

That dress looks almost identical to the one Natalie Dormer wears when Anne becomes Marquess of Pembroke in the Tudors

She played a dangerous game with the head of a nation and lost! Sounds like Diana
I quite like that interpretation it’s unique nice thinking
Good point well made but how do you expect Henry to be aware of that ?
Didn't Natalie Dormer wear a red dress in The Tudors, similar to the one Helena's wearing?
scorpianofthesun it’s the same dress

because it was set up by henry
@londonchick2 - the reason that the quotes are identical is because they are taken directly from history. she said the exact words in real life.
That woman who was watching George Boleyn's arrest is really starting to bug me.
Our so called royalty was absolutely dicusting.
RIP Queen Katherine,Queen Jane and Queen Anne
Are you a male? :D And by the way. You forgot Anne´s family´s influense.
Anne did not know her brother or any of the other accused men had been arrested until she had been incarcerated for some time, and she herself was not arrested until 3 months after her final miscarriage

A little thinking in the area of common sense goes a long way!
I would like us all to remember that Helena was pregnant during the filming of this hense how her dresses look
I think the only reason everybody likes Natalie Dormer in the Anne Boleyn role is because she is so beautiful. She's a good actress too, but personally, I don't think she fits the role. Oh well :) I do think physically Helena is more fitting.
Both were written by Peter Morgan.

Anne's got guts she full well knows that she could be killed but yet she still gives them additude
She knows her deaths already inevitable and there’s nothing she could do or say to change it yet she gives it her all to try and make some sort of difference
@aprilshower7799 it did not work like that in the 1500's especially in royal circles the king and princes had their cake with icecream on the side
Obviously.
