you see that's what I love about writing and other art forms, it's never too late to start. In fact, as you grow more experienced through age, you'll be even better at expressing yourself through art. There is no "peak" because you can grow more and more through your life, and I think that's beautiful.
You kids and your crazy ideas… You have lots of productive time to develop as a writer! I’m 66, and I’ve had essays commercially published, and I feel like I’m just starting to figure things out now. People like you and me have a lifetime of experiences to bring to the craft, and that gives us a unique place and perspective in the vast diversity within the writing community.
I'm not young and not new to writing, I only watched this out of curiousity. I was a bit afraid this is gonna say stuff like "stick to these and that writing rules" or "don't do this, do that" but this is actually a good list to go by. I feel like a lot of beginner writers just worry too much if they are as good as others, if they make mistakes, or worry too fast about publishing and everything.
Everyone can be a writer. All it takes is to just start somewhere. I started at age 16-17 (i don't exactly remember anymore). And then just keep trying, experiment, invent, have fun.
Like, look, I am autistic and I was told by a therapist that "autists are not capable of creative thinking". That therapist doesn't understand what creativity is. Creativity is what you want it to be. Creativity means having new ideas, invent, ignore rules, doing whatever is on your mind. Wether its writing, drawing, crafting or any other form of art. There is no such thing as "uncreative" as long as you at least try. Uncreative for me is if you don't even try.
Sure, I might not understand emotions and I might not be able to tell how different people would act in different situations, but at least I try and I like what I'm writing. I uploaded some of my writing for others to read, and would you believe it, some people actually liked it. others only said I have a good style of writing, but that the topic of the story wasn't their cup of tea, which is completely fine. People are different. Not everyone will like your stories. Thats why the only thing that counts is, do YOU like your stories? If you do, then just keep going!

Not a young person, but I am new to writing. I have two childrens books I have published. I am working on another children’s book, a novel and a novella going on right now. I started young, writing poetry but was discouraged unfortunately. It took many years, but I started again. Life is a journey and I have a different perspective on life now that I am older. Thanks for all the advice you two give us. It is greatly appreciated.

so publishing a book in Zimbabwe is quite hard and it can take up a lot of time as well as money but i am privileged enough to have an aunt who works for the Weaver Press company and I hope it will be a bit easier for me to publish my book which i am almost done with ...i have always loved and aspired to be a writer ever since i was little girl and i hope to live that dream soon 😊

Im 18 years old and i live in Afghanistan.
My favourite genre for writing is Thriller/mystery/crime and romance.
And I've been thinking about writing in Thriller/crime for 3 three months now . I've outlined, created my characters and other things but I haven't started writing yet.. it makes me really overwhelmed when I see how perfectionism stops me from letting myself go and just write it down .. in our country no one has ever written in this genre.. so if I accomplish my task I'd be the first one .. guys wish me luck!
Hello Abbie and Kate & community. I am a teen writer (14) I always written on and off since i was little, the classic 'she wakes up in the morning goes about her day and learns she is the chosen one!' I never was able to continue these stories, feeling as thought they lacked emotion and meaning. Last year I found your content!
Since deep diving into character driven stories and the connection with psychology I have started several novels, that, even though I have not followed through with them are still interesting to me. Currently I am 55k words into a story and am loving every second of it! Thank you for being here and inspiring creatives to create! 💛

I find that the best of these stories involve the person being chosen by themselves. They see a problem, nobody else is fixing the problem, so they choose themselves to fix it.
@@matthewwriter9539yeah that’s right. I don’t like destiny chosen characters, especially if they’re just the same or has nothing unique and different from other characters in that universe.
@@Twig_ccj...she is the twin sister of the main character from the last story. Everyone thought that HE was the hero from the prophecy, however the prophecy was mis interpretated.
So even thought she was never mentioned in the previous story AT ALL, now she must go and save her twin brother, and save the entire kingdom almost entirely on her own, with only a little help from her per cat.
...oh wait. That is a Mary Sue character.

Both JK Rowling and Brandon Sanderson were roughly around 30 years old when they first published their books, so fretting about not publishing a book as a teenager is absurd, and unnecessary.
Brandon Sanderson especially, he spent almost ten years writing 11 unpublished novels before his breakthrough in 2005.

Something I’d like for an episode
In our world of progress it can be difficult for some authors to keep up. I think with how conversations are going in the book community right now a good topic to talk about would be sensitivity readers.
Maybe you’re writing a book with a disabled main character, you can hire a sensitivity reader who has experienced that disability to give you feedback on your portrayal.
If you’re writing a person of color as your main character, you can hire someone who has lived that life to let you know if your character reads like a stereotype or like a person.
If you want to do this idea for an episode it would also be really cool to have a guest as well!

So much in this video I agree with when discussing creativity and how it can be a detriment to compare our work to others as well as criticisms made by those who don’t understand that the process is always changing and growing and it’s a dynamic environment. Mahalo nui loa!
since i was a child, i used to write songs, parodys, and i had a lot of fun without the pression. i was in my own world. when i grew up, i start to write my own songs, and guess what? it was very bad, like... very very bad. but it was cathartic, and now my compositions is way better than used to be. i think the best tip for young writers or artists in general is: just do it and keep going.
you don't need to know everything at once. you know all the path by walking through.

@@TinyPrettyNini Fifth or sixth drafts is where it really gets fun. Then comes substantive edits, copy edits, line edits, and the final proofreading. If you're a signed author, this all has to be finished before the publishing deadline. Then there's the marketing... etc. Oh, the joy of writing. 😂👍

@@TinyPrettyNini Writing does get easier after several years of consistent practice. Since becoming a ghostwriter in 2009, I've reached a point where I can produce an average of three novels per year for my clients. The best part is, I continue to learn new tricks and tips from channels like this one.

I've been writing professionally for about 5 years abut it's good to have other writers confirm things that I already know while telling me things that I may not think about often. Like not worry about publishing too much and knowing your editing process which keeps evolving as time goes on.

This came just is time. I am a young writer and sometimes I doubt myself as a writer. Thinking my work isn’t good enough but I’m working to overcome that doubt.
Your work doesn't have to be good. G. K. Chesterton said that anything worth doing is worth doing badly.
When you start you won't know how to write well, but you'll get better with practice. Embrace the doubt and use it to improve. Write the trash and embarrassing pieces that must never see the light of day.
The important thing is that you need to write, whether good or bad. The story is inside you and needs to get out.
And maybe someday you'll go back, look at the trash you wrote before and find a jewel waiting to be polished.

I'm 15, and finishing my first draft this year (120k and in desperate need of revision) was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. If you added these girls ages together I would still be older, but I am just starting to take my writing hobby and make it a vocation (maybe full time maybe not) but I have done a fair bit of writing plays and skits for local fundraising and church plays. Always in front of a polite audience so I didn't get too exited about compliments but once in August people were still talking to me about our Christmas play I realized it was impactful, it was when I found Abbie Emmons channel though that I found the direction and discipline to get started for real. That last point really hit home. Experiencing things. Personal feelings.
Many settings and characters are based on places I’ve been to or people I know (other personally or via other stories). Every story reflects the writer in some way. And I know my style definitely involves a lot of tidbits I gathered from places, other stories, little facts, etcetera, as well as a need to have some thematic and symbolic coherence.
In my sci-fi concept especially, there are planet with locales similar to ones I’ve been to myself. And when I was in those places, I really kept imagining how congruent they were with the places I’d made up already. There’s this multilayered bridge in Porto which I used in a city. Some of the mountain ranges in western Slovenia gelled well with a preestablished mountainous world and the landscape around the Mosel river served as a reference for the warmest region of an otherwise cold planet.
It can be spectacular to look back. Look back at earlier ideas and see how an early concept created so many spores that led to a concept often becoming bigger, but a concept can definitely also grow more focused and coherent. Certain ideas I had in mind for my sci-fi concept has become so much bigger. It initially started as a pretty barebones and unoriginal idea of a dry mining planet with harsh conditions where outlaws reigned. That planet has now faded into one of my lower priority places, when it comes to characters I feel most invested in. And the main character is now a higher entity who’s taken interest in studying the ‘little people’. In the case of sci-fi planets, I really wanted to flesh them out. Almost like they are characters of their own. As much as I like Star Wars, you can sum up a lot of planets by their aesthetics. Desert planet. Forest moon. City planet. There are so many planets there, so it’s hard to flesh them out much. I made sure to give all planets distinct cultures, characters and issues, as well as providing different biomes per planet.
The raw grit, the simply… working on it… the writing itself has been a bit tough sometimes. But lately I’ve been more consistent, making headway on one project in particular and within that project, one duo of characters in particular. And I’m now on my way to my eighth chapter with those two. 25000 words or so. Not really looking back a whole lot, even though I know some things that are likely to require redos. I’ve built up my characters and worlds a lot from just thinking about them and writing snippets in my notes app. But actually being busy with those characters and following their story from one scene to the next gave me so many spontaneous insights about them and the story as a whole. Such a great thing to do is indeed to just start. As the meme goes: JUST DO IT!
I’ve liked storytelling for a long time really. Not in the way that I actually wrote down a whole lot (though I wrote down some), but more so in the way that I played fantasy stories with my brother or best friend from primary school. The speculative side of things has always interested me most. And my first fantasy world still resides story ideas, though they are not too high on the priority pedestal now, as I like the stories I’ve made up in more recent years. Those are more mature and coherent. But they haven’t vacated my cluttered mindspace yet. And they probably never will.

Same here, in that I'm not a young or a new writer. I started when I was a teenager, then life side tracked it. When Covid hit and we couldn't go anywhere I picked it up again with the intention of finishing one story. And now 6 are done and working on the 7th of the series! Awesome video, thank you so much! Every writer no matter if new or not so new, should watch this! It was a very good reminder to really take your time and give the story the time it needs to develop :) Especially now with the pressure of social media to publish as many books as possible. It really made me think and I decided for myself to go for quality and not quantity. So I pushed publishing plan further into the future and will fully emerge on writing and editing my novels
I’ve been writing since I was 6 or 7, and now in my sophomore year of highschool, I’m realizing that this, Writing? Is something I’m really great at doing. I’ve always been good at words on paper, or moves on a dance floor more than talking. And like all your videos, I’m sure this one will help so much :)
Im finally past that roadblock that was stopping me from writing, and now that my story is progressing again, I feel like I can finish much sooner than I thought.
I want to publish before I turn 18, but who knows.
Still though, spending 8 years on one book is kind of sad to me. Especially with how many projects I want to work on.

For me it was my endless perfectionism decreasing my motive for writing because my story was, "Not good enough" and I had to edit each chapter so much that I only wrote eleven chapters in a year and a half!
Now I'm just putting words on a page to edit later and I've gotten five and a half chapters in just a month and a half!!

@@user-wt1fn5gb1v lucky. I did that whole “write words down and edit later” thing about 5 years ago.
It was cringe and terrible, but it gave me a good outline for my first draft.
And then, I finally decided to start writing seriously about 2 years ago.
I got about 5 chapters before I realized that everything I had written was bad.
Poorly written. So I kind of just stopped for a while and wrote short stories and fanfictions to improve my prose.
A little while later and I forgot that I had a book.
I just recently got back into writing it, and I’m already seeing a huge improvement in quality.

I have a whole telepathy segment that I’m probably going to have to cut because telepathy would be very hard for me to balance in my story.

So, I am a young writer who really wants to write, go ahead and show my story! But, right now I'm facing a problem which has been bugging me from day one! And you really are correct about how younger kids have more creativity, because I had SO much motivation! Yet now I'm lacking it all of a sudden. Like, where did the short stories of different dragon types go?? I had like >90 parts and I’d show everyone! Now to the question, how do you get that spark of motivation to start?
I'm an old man working on his first book, so I don't want to be taken as someone who is too picky but, one doesn't normally keep tools in a quiver. A quiver is for arrows and similar missiles for hunting or for warfare. Tools are normally kept in a toolbox, a pouch, or on a tool belt. There are a few other places where tools are kept like on a workbench.
Other than that one point I enjoyed the video and I think I learned a thing or two from it.
I'm currently working on a science fiction story about a human-alien hybrid that can shape shift between the forms of his two parent races. I am currently suffering writer's block and am looking for something that will get me through it.

I wrote fanfiction all throughout my preteens, teens, and even into my 20s. I'm glad I did because, while I'm proud of the commitment and love and dedication I gave to those stories, there is a lot I have learned in my writing technique since then. I'm writing what is to be my debut fiction now and am actually really proud of where it's at, but I think a lot of that is because I've gotten to play with so many styles of voice over the years.
Same here! I'm in my 20s and still giving it a go with the fanfics, but it's been majorly sidelined once I got a job and am now focused on my own story. I always had ideas for my own stories but never knew which one to go with or how to make it all fit. Since I've been taking it seriously, I think finally crafted a outline to the story that's been in my head for years. But what I wanted to share is, when I look back at the first fanfic I ever wrote in my teens and compare it to the ones I write now, I can see such a huge difference in the technique, style, voice. I'm super embarrassed about my teen one, but I leave it there to remind myself just how far I've come. It's amazing to see a timeline like that.
I self published at 16 and it flopped because I had no idea what I was doing, I didn’t even edit it. I’m planning on rewriting the book at some point and doing it correctly this time.

I've been writing since I was 7 (my mum accidentally threw out all of my stuff from 7 to 12 ,it was all in one notebook) and I always loved writing but I didn't get any proper ideas . I've always been a fantasy or children's book person . I've even had a few murder mystery ideas but I havent been able to get far in terms of developing them . Now at almost 19 I think I have the one that is what I want to go forward with . Funny enough it's a romance which isn't setting I ever thought I'd write

So, i'm jessi and i'm a very very young writer cause i'm just of 11 yrs and the writting idea came in my mind when i read harry potter.
I'm writing a fantasy (which came in my dream) and i add many things in it. I was thinking like i should finished my book in summer vacation (i finished 15,000 ) but, i can't do it. And if you are like me anyone so, you know in 6th their a lot thing to study.
I've been writing different things for years but am just now beginning to take it seriously so i'm still a beginner writer. I'm 35. These are great tips! And even if I know them sometimes one needs a reminder. I'm working on a fantasy novel and i'm in chapter 4 at 12k in the rough draft and doing writing updates on here. I'm having so much fun!

Actually, I've been wanting to write a novel since I was very young. I finally found out how to actually do it at 63. I wrote the first draft of my first novel for NaNoWriMo.
It's a lot easier than it was when information was hard to find and drafts were pounded out on a Smith-Corona typewriter with a faded ribbon.
I started writing on Wattpad last summer. I found for the most part, as long as you use Google Docs to help proofread before posting, most people are very encouraging of you sharing your writing. Excessive typos and no paragraph breaks are common pet peeves among readers. There are so many genres on serial platforms like Wattpad that there are always readers to read your story. Just don't get disheartened if it's not getting a million reads and just keep writing it. Older and finished stories tend to get read more than my current ones. My first story is full of mistakes that I am trying to edit now, but people still enjoyed it and still do. I wished I had started when I was younger but didn't. This year, I'm focusing on branching out into LGBTQIA+ historical fiction on Wattpad and Ream. I am also thinking about publishing this story when I am finished and I never would have imagined publishing a book if I didn't let myself write "silly stories" on Wattpad first.
Inspired! That is my plan as well - to get my feet wet on Wattpad. Thanks for sharing your experience and your encouragement for it as a valid platform to cut your teeth on.
Also would love to hear what you think about Ream. I watched some videos from the cofounders’ YT channel and I believe they have good intentions for sure.

Hey also, just a thought that might get more eyes in your story. Maybe write a really good short fan fic on a character that a lot of readers are actively searching for and drawn to.
From reading your fanfic, they will experience your style and your voice and then you can transition them over to your original works on your author notes etc?
I love a good author voice. It’s a huge factor on me reading a work and yeah, I’ll often reread that voice before I pick up a new one. It would be great to be the story that gets reread. 😂.

@@nikkinewbie6014 That's a great idea thanks. 😊 I'm not a fanfic person and I think I'm doing okay without that by being consistent. A lot of people won't read until you finish or unless you update consistently. A lot of people write a bit of a story and stop so personally, I try not to start reading a story either until it's clear they will finish it. I love Ream. It's not a get rich scheme and they are very clear on that. I picture Wattpad and Ream as marketing and writing practice, baby steps on my way to publishing. They act like free marketing. The subscription business model normally goes free Wattpad/Ream to get noticed, then Ream subscription to slowly find your 'superfans', the readers who will want to read everything you put out for a monthly fee. Another way to look at it is my Wattpad commenters are my beta readers and Ream subscribers are my arc. Ream subscriptions typically include arc copies of any published books. It's best to keep the subscription simple, the easiest benefit to get comfortable starting is early access, so my paid subscribers get my chapters before my free followers. I also do bonus content but I wouldn't have been able to do that when I just started on Wattpad. There are lots of cool subscription benefits you could offer but it's important to wait to find out what's worth the money Vs time and what your subscribers want. I'm still getting Wattpad readers to head over to Ream but the average ratio is 3-5% of Ream followers will upgrade to paid. I offer free and paid bonus content on Ream to try and entice them over there so they can see my locked paid content. My second pen name I will be enticing them over to Ream from day 1. I've only been on Ream for a few weeks and have 3 paid subscribers, some have zero, some have thousands. It's easier to make a living off of subscriptions if you're already making a living as a published author with a mailing list. It takes time to build up but you can get started finding paying readers before you are ready to publish and I think that is invaluable. And this marketing strategy is free, you only pay Ream 10% and the unavoidable business bank fees when someone pays you. I'm currently only making $19/month USD but like I said, it's only been a few weeks and I have a small Wattpad following. I'm not sure what the banking fees are because by the time it hits my bank account, it's more than the USD once transferred to Canadian dollars. And I'm still months away from publishing my first novel. So making $19 USD / month is more than I ever thought I would get paid for writing.

I’ve read several stories but don’t have anything I think is ready to post. I’m going to write a fanfic and I’m developing it now. I think it’s a really good premise.

Hi! So i feel a little stuck, I want to write, but not sure what - most advice is “just write” but I don’t know what or how. Like learning in a structured way. For things like drawing there is a very clear oath to learning and exercises to help every step of the way. I haven’t really found that with writing. With art it’s also easy to know if something is good or bad, with writing you can’t “see” your improvement.
