The sandblasting is always the most cathartic part of these for me, but using sockets to pull out those headlights (collapsing the clips) has got to be one of the biggest lightbulb moments I have ever seen. Thank you for giving me a tip I might actually be able to use at work!

Thanks for taking this 70 year old back to when I was 8. I had the same truck except yours looks to be about a 1956 model. mine was the 1958 Ford suburban pumper with black wall tires. The only difference in the two are the tires and the grill. I had the hydrant with the garden hose connection and the hard suction supply line. I went to many fires during my childhood with that engine. my dad and mom gave it to me for Christmas in 1958. He was a firefighter and later on I became one. I still have the engine and the box it came in although losing some of the stuff. Not even Tonka makes toys like that anymore. Thanks for the mems.

I am 64 and I still have mine also. I put it under my Christmas tree every year as an unwrapped gift.
My favorite story about mine is explaining to people how the metal rails and metal “lights” on the top truck bed got bent in. My father and a neighbor used the toy to move an old, extremely heavy refrigerator to the alley. Talk about Tonka Tuff!
As a child I was always disappointed that none of the headlights, tail and emergency lights would light up. But even way back then I imagined maybe someday in the future they would make tiny lights that I would be able to wire it up someday. Obviously, micro lights have been around for a few years. Heck, even tiny battery lights are easy to apply.
I lost my metal ladder along time ago. I preferred the wooden ladder I made to replace it better anyway.

These are usually accessible at age 13 or 14. These explorer posts are meant to train children on what firefighting is really like and gives a significant input on what the future could be as far as firefighting. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask, I’m one reply away. Good luck!
