THANK YOU for mentioning eye cups. One thing to be aware of with eye cups, is fogging. I've had my nods fog up pretty bad in hot and cold environments because the eye cups hold that moisture in. A quick fix is to just inside-out the eye cup itself for like 30 seconds and it usually clears up pretty fast. I never understood why everyone rips them off tho. It's so much easier to see people when they don't have them on. If you're trying to be sneaky, they're a must.
They rip them off to prevent the fogging you mentioned and also to maintain some peripheral vision. Unfortunately most people crank the gain all the way up, brighter is better right? No, no it's not better. Not only do you have better visual acuity with the gain down a bit (you can check this with a Snellen eye chart) but by turning it down more you can maintain better peripheral vision. It doesn't need to be daylight bright to give you all the detail available. Don't let the 40° FOV overwhelm the other 160° of natural night vision. You'll be much better off.
@dimitriyakushev3076 it's not a "training scar" it's best practices. Like I said, don't let the 40° field of view of the device overwhelm the other 160° of normal vision. Why shut out 3/4 of your normal field of view?

The pvs 7 on the other hand both eyes looked through the night vision through a single lens. When the night vision was taken off all you could see was black. It would take several minutes for your natural night vision to come back. In a combat environment that is not ideal.

Except for the lack of depth perception it was a real advantage to walk patrols with PVS 5's. I always thought it was cool how it picked up the static from the rotors.
Been doing a lot of pre-purchase research and reading on NODs and it's a daunting task to filter out what's good, decent, and "best". I figure there are 10X MORE folks that can barely afford the "entry-level" stuff than the upper tier Harris GPNVG-18 Pano's, etc. That said, how about a video on "best bang-for-the-buck", entry-level NODs for the everyman? With so many companies offering so many options, with different tube specs, Gens, etc., as I said, it IS daunting to sift through the mountains of information and determine what's currently the best value, best sources, best prices, etc. We just need a little guidance in the right direction. Love your content!
If you get dual tubes with an articulating housing you can essentially get a two for one effect because if you want to run a single tube you just swing the other one out of sight. Individual preference will also come down to eye dominance and other vision issues as well. Some people get massive headaches from running single tubes because their Brains hate rectifying two conflicting images. Good info about the use case though, I see you didn't waste time in 1st Group.
very good points, I always liked the monocular (14s) but couldn't jump with them and driving was more of a pain as my head was always on a swivel. So the 15s and 31s were better for that. Definitely need the counter weights for the 15s and 31s or you will have a neck workout. Also, remember the whiteout if somebody had the headlight on with the 14s, not the case with the 31s.
@@expert244 It's where the gubberment gives back the money they took from me for being productive. Uncle Sam has helped me purchase new guns, ammo, and silencers. How thoughtful of them
I cannot think of a single scenario where single is better than dual. I’ve used them professionally and had personal sets for 12 years. Assuming we are talking about helmet worn night vision, the whole “one eye can see lighting conditions” is a bunch of crap. One you can look under your nods to see lighting conditions or just look off to the side and then second once you train or just get enough experience under nods you can tell lighting conditions looking through the nods. Price is the only “advantage” of a pvs14 and thats not really an advantage. The argument of a pvs14 or even photonis gen 2 nods is like trying to argue that the Honda Civic is just as good and the Lamborghini because one cost $5,000-$15,000 and the other costs $300,000 and they both get you from point A to Point B. Actually even better it’s like comparing the little Toyota truck as a combat vehicle to the new JLTV that replacing our humvees.
Lots of good info in here! I didn't know that people set different focal depths for each tube on dual tube setups. One small correction when you were discussing collimation: There is no refresh rate on image intensified night vision. Thanks for posting this kind of content!
Just gets dual tubes... running one tube sucks and everyone knows it but people want to defend it because of those that cannot afford both. A monocular is great for keeping in your pocket staying grey but helmet mounted one tube sucks and you can train all you want won’t change the fact it sucks and is the worse option
During some extended out of state training my PL pulled us out at night to play capture the flag out in the brush using NODs. I had been doing the night vision thing for years with 14s but some of the newer guys were absolute garbage using these. That night was the best night vision familiarization "training" ever. Running though the dark, having to ID people on the other team, not eating shit while doing this, being sneaky, etc. Alot of training value doing even simple stuff like this with NODs. Now, trying to play football...that was interesting lol
Thanks! I have been seriously considering getting into NV, because of cost I won't be going with duels right away and research I've been doing suggest single tubes are a great option. Just need to train with them. I really appreciate the information. I watch you on WPSN also. I try to support all the good guys that I can, at least the ones that are making a difference!
When I was a younger man I wore night vision quite a bit for a few years. At one high-point in my career the driver of my vehicle drove us off the edge of a mountain road while using a single tube device... resulting in a brief period of excitement, followed by several miserable hours of dangerous work in the rain to recover the vehicle and a lot of asschewing from my boss - and his boss - and his boss. Having also stepped straight into an open, armpit deep hole, (smashing the NODs into my face), while using a single tube, binocular device, I must say I find myself very interested in better depth perception and spatial awareness from a night vision device.
@@bmstylee fair enough, but to me its about hobbies/priorities. How many people do you know that have LOANS for 20, 30, 40, or 50k dollar vehicles or boats or other toys? Honestly, depends what you train with. I personally like the single. Having one eye adopted to the normal conditions and the environment is way far superior when things get out of hand lights going off or whatever else. In the dark if you get blinded with a high intensity light with the dual set up its game over. You are looking at minutes to recover. While your eye with the single night vision will only take moments to adopt to the situation because its already trained since the day you are born. Every day you walk in the dark rooms and turn you lights on. How long you eyes take to process the input. Mare 10s of seconds.
This is going to sound stupid but I tried this out as a civilian of course with my friend using the monocular. Put the phone stuff that you see football players using to reduce glare on their face and then take some electrical tape and wrap it so that it extends past the Gap and makes it 100% seal but you use more tape than it is required to actually reach both sides of course so it has a bit of a playroom when your helmet moves and it kind of gives you the ability to you know give you that quarter inch of smushy space and it'll completely seal off that ability for the enemy to see your night vision

I am technically blind in my left eye; I'm right eye dominant and have a lazy eye that never got corrected properly. Should I even bother with night vision goggles (assuming I even had the money or even had any interested in them to begin with; which I'm not sure I do) if I can't see out of the other eye anyway? Would I be better off using a NV scope instead?
More power to you. I was issued both in my career. I hate them. Binocular version killed depth perception and complete natural night vision. The monocular was better, but lift it up and I was night blind in that eye. Nothing cool back then, it was all iron sights.

There are few things more fun than giving all the new joes NODs and telling them to wonder around in the woods to get used to them.
😁
To answer the question of the title, it's the one you can afford.
very good points, I always liked the monocular (14s) but couldn't jump with them and driving was more of a pain as my head was always on a swivel. So the 15s and 31s were better for that. Definitely need the counter weights for the 15s and 31s or you will have a neck workout. Also, remember the whiteout if somebody had the headlight on with the 14s, not the case with the 31s.
Need a bigger stimi for this kind of stuff.
Hahahahahahhaaaaaa!
What’s stimulus??? 😞
@@expert244 It's where the gubberment gives back the money they took from me for being productive. Uncle Sam has helped me purchase new guns, ammo, and silencers. How thoughtful of them
@@HB-kp6rl i got my 14 and dbal back in April of last year with the first stimmy lol 😂
@@SkeezyFPVWell hell yeah
You know it's gonna be good when MrGuns whips out the Whiteboard of Knowledge
That’s a white board but it ain’t the white board of knowledge
Little Toyota trucks worked well for the Taliban… and they won
Lots of good info in here! I didn't know that people set different focal depths for each tube on dual tube setups. One small correction when you were discussing collimation: There is no refresh rate on image intensified night vision. Thanks for posting this kind of content!
Thank you
Perfect for looking for a prehistoric chicken that has been eating your herd in the middle of the night. Just remember to bring your Barrett.
Driving.....monocular or binocular???
Just gets dual tubes... running one tube sucks and everyone knows it but people want to defend it because of those that cannot afford both. A monocular is great for keeping in your pocket staying grey but helmet mounted one tube sucks and you can train all you want won’t change the fact it sucks and is the worse option
Any thoughts on 40 vs 51 fov?
Good thing I only have one good eye, so I’ve had terrible depth perception anyway 👍🏼
In the kingdom of the night-blind the one-eyed man with a single tube NVD is king, my friend.
Great vid. I had a single pvs14, but got really bad headaches. Switched to dual RNVG and now no headaches. Wonder what that's all about?
👏 more night vision content!
Nice to see more NV content... popular topic right now.
Thanks for this video. I intend to get night vision so this was very helpful. Glad to hear that you are on WPSN.
Glad it was helpful!
I like to run a single tube on my left eye, while keeping both eyes open on my Aimpoint allowing the red dot overlay in my vision to work for me
I only have vison in one eye, so the choice is simple.
love the "idea" of NVGs, but until i can buy a set for less than i paid for my motorcycle, i'm on flashlights.
easy don't be poor
@@jacobmiller559 i still would have hard time justifying dropping 2-3k or more on a set. But that's me.
@@bmstylee fair enough, but to me its about hobbies/priorities. How many people do you know that have LOANS for 20, 30, 40, or 50k dollar vehicles or boats or other toys? Yet someone in this communities writes a check for 8 or 9k and are set for life- people think that is to much money. Hobbies are hobbies and night vision has an upper limit. quad nods are about 40k. Thats it, that's as expensive as it gets, now think about people with project cars, or other hobbies that can get really expensive.
@@jacobmiller559 - Agreed. Paid cash for the bike. And there a 100% likelihood that i'll use it every nice day that i can because its fun & the most fuel efficient vehicle i have.
likelihood that as a civilian, i'll need to run night vision for anything other than high dollar larping... slim... real slim.
meanwhile, my flashlights are rechargeable. 👏
@@jacobmiller559 those quad ones are really cool looking. But you're dead on. People drop way more everyday for toys. You can now spend $70k on a Jeep Wranglers. My next things are an Armalite AR50 and maybe learning how the NFA proceas works. Thinking about a silencer and making an SBR. Since I'm not super familiar how long will a set of these last?
Opinions on the NightFox cheapo brand on Amazon? Any practical uses?
But Mike!! Chappy said... jus kiddin lol. Awesome video!!! Unfilmed White Phos PVS-14 for me so I could also afford a FLIR and lap dances 😎😉
I’d love a video showing broken or damaged tubes compared to perfect or spec tubes
“ specked” tubes are the norm it’s a common manufacturer defect.
Professional presentation* based in reality.
thanks
😳 Saw the price and cried.
Considering what you were saying, I take that looking though a rifle scope over a lifetime can give one an advantage.
Mare 10s of seconds.
dirty civilian proves your theory wrong
This is going to sound stupid but I tried this out as a civilian of course with my friend using the monocular. Put the phone stuff that you see football players using to reduce glare on their face and then take some electrical tape and wrap it so that it extends past the Gap and makes it 100% seal but you use more tape than it is required to actually reach both sides of course so it has a bit of a playroom when your helmet moves and it kind of gives you the ability to you know give you that quarter inch of smushy space and it'll completely seal off that ability for the enemy to see your night vision
I was about to grab a second 14. Had no idea I'd have to have them collimated! Thanks for the heads-up.
Flash Bang... NVG? Useless in that event... u have home field advantage... keep ur wife, kids? N Pupper Doodle(s) behind ur focused FOF
JUST STOP! 6 minutes into a 27 minute video and you have already interrupted YOURSELF 3 times! STOP!
Absolutely great content, no doubt about that, just stop with interrupting YOURSELF with making the viewer aware of something they may not have even noticed until YOU pointed it out. THAT is more distracting than the geese or wind or airplanes or whatever else it was that I did not even notice (because I was paying attention to you) until you pointed it out.
Love your content, you are knowledgeable and present it well only when YOU DO NOT INTERRUPT YOURSELF in the middle of explaining something.
Too rich for my blood. That will bring just a basic equipment, plates, vest, belt, helmet, rifle, pistol, optics, mags, boots, etc,,, 20 grand out to 80k.
Q1. What about people who have astigmatisms and the affect of Night Vis? Q2. Do or Do not wear prescription contacts? Q3.Eye pro with night vis or no eye pro? Thanks in advance
There are objective lens kits to convert your 40° FOV to 50° FOV. Just saying
Great vid. Very informative. helicopters & geese?? you better watch out...
With the exception of agent Starling. Buffalo Bill could’ve won that, but he was too busy grabbing her hair with his right hand and touching himself with his left. She had a hand cannon too...what the hell made that muzzle flash? Hollywood gun porn, sorry.
I think you may have meant to say either that you have ‘arrived at’ or ‘derived’ your opinions at 1:20, ‘derided’ means something quite different! At 7:20 ‘culminated’ is a different meaning word from ‘collimated’, sorry to pull this up again!
I don't know why I'm watching this vid, I have CAS, ( CANT AFFORD SHIT ) 😕
Huge respect bro. Just anout to buy a single monocular night vision to be helmet mounted for airsoft. Played a night game a few weeks ago and couldnt see anything. Right need night vision lol.
I personally like to bridge a pvs-14 with a thermal unit…gives you the best of both worlds in my opinion
Quads, prohibitively expensive? 😂 I'd say so too. PVS 14's are already prohibitively expensive for me 😂😂
Thanks Mike, this really helped me understand what I needed to purchase.
I have both. 2 pvs14's on a pano bridge. Shits awesome. I can break it down when I want
Would an extra battery bank on back be sufficient as a counterweight for single tube setups?
Started off with a single 14.. now I’m loving my RNVG 😬

As somebody that drinks a lot, I feel like i'll adapt to the depth perception easily. Thanks for the info. Lol
Let's make nvg with a thin digital small screen and have the nvg mounted center top of helm with 360 cam
So are you keeping one eye closed when ur using a single tube? How does it look when you're looking down just one tube?
I've signed up on both web sites , but no emails are getting through. Not even in spam folder ....
More power to you. I was issued both in my career. I hate them. Binocular version killed depth perception and complete natural night vision. The monocular was better, but lift it up and I was night blind in that eye. Nothing cool back then, it was all iron sights.
I forget how we aimed at night with NVG. We all had single tubes.
Aside from an IR laser, what else is used to aim?
