Identity politics is a failed experiment. WE (the majority) has given it a chance to show us if it has any value, and it has not. It will naturally, at some point kill itself off. What we have learned is that left, right or any side, given power over others will abuse its powers and will use it's position to hurt and oppress the other. But we should already know this, because where did the saying "Power corrupts..." come from? It's time to move the freedoms of the alt-left back to a moderate position, before they become terrorist, as what happened to the alt-right when they were given too much lee-way. Its like someone is experimenting on us! "
"Lets give this side too much power and see what happens... That was fun! Lets give it to the other side and see what happens... wheeee!!!!"
What we need to do is go back to move forward. That means, as back in the 60s, there was personal moderation. We didn't publically announce our sexual preferences. What we did in the bedroom was between us and whomever we were doing it with. Guess what - nobody was getting doxxed, sued, arrested, milkshaked - because it was nobody's business and what you did was a private thing. We need to get our bedroom habits out of the streets and back to a private place - there has been ZERO BENEFIT in making our sexuality a public matter - all it has brought us is a hateful, toxic, over-sensitive world.

I couldn't help feeling during the interview that Lionel would be a natural receiver of the Paglia baton: they share the same independence, erudition and originality of thought and being. It was also encouraging to hear her namecheck Ella Whelan, who has the potential to develop in a similar vein, but is from a generation whereby a counter-narrative way of thinking could definitely use some moral support.

I’m glad you got Lionel on. She’s got a good head on her shoulders.
I agree with her assessment on the Millennial left, who are a lot like the Baby Boomer left in all the worst ways. Of course there are exceptions in both but their shared levels of high narcissism plays a large role. If anyone doubts this they should see the number of articles written about Millennials taking over the throne from Boomers or articles written by Boomers where they claim they are giving the throne to Millennials. Legends in their own minds! This is all due to their demographic size, which makes them a favored target of advertisers/marketing but not much else considering we have no thrones or crowns to give in the U.S.
I remember having conversations with my friends about how horrific some Boomers (I’m speaking of actual generational time lines, not telling a Boomer joke) were in high school, during the early 1990s/Satanic Panic years. Our conversations always drifted to how much worse Millennials were going to be. I’m sad to say we weren’t wrong.
I started noticing mbrs of the Millennial left becoming more extreme a decade ago. I saw so many people, including myself, telling them they were contributing to the creation of a far right monster. The far left & right have always been 2 sides of the same coin. They have much more in common with each other than most realize, and they feed off each other.
The common reply was, “SHUT UP!! You’re no longer welcome on left”.
I realized then that they honestly believed everyone in their generation thought and felt the exact same way as them and due to the fact that they (like Boomers) have a larger generational demographic, they believed they didn’t need anyone else. Their votes and numbers alone would be enough for every election & everything to always go their way.
Never mind the fact that they don’t outnumber every other generation combined or that their extremism had already driven many in their own generation to the opposite extreme or more to the center.

Her ending statement hit so deep i almost cried. Im not having children by choice. Meanwhile the ones that get most support from the world abuse it. They multiply and ask for more support. They migrate and multiply uncontrolably there aswell. Its not good, its not cool, its doesnt give you immediate rewards to practice constraint. Thinking about the future is becoming a luxury to idiots that they themselves deem it unobtainable. The lifestyle where you consuming everything that you can and then go take from other by force(be it physical or mental) is spreading like wildfire. Institutions that are supposed to make people use their brains for the good of themselves and those around them are now training dogs for arena fighting. And theyre prioritising it over delivering quality education to people. There is no way i am letting a child into a world thats drowning every soul it gets the chance to and everyone in the water is preocupied latching on to the closest person near them in hopes they will pull them up instead of swimmimg for themselves. I refuse to be that cruel to my child.

Its simple - These kids were never told NO by their parents. They were coddled and protected all their formative years. They are told by their parents everything they do is correct and other people that disagree are wrong. As children they run to their parents to stop the offense. Once they are grown up their parents can no longer help so this only leaves employers and the governments.

It’s also not important. We’re faced with shit policy (impacting real lives now) coming from the right (the current UK gov) with a push to make the rich richer and fuck-off everyone else, the environment and the national institutions and infrastructure.

Fantastic interview. When I finished my PhD in the early 2000's, I left academia because at that time administrators frequently failed to back up adjuncts and full-time faculty on the left. In my case, the breaking point was not being supported in refusing to accept creationist and biblical arguments as evidence in a non-theological academic paper. Then, as now, the student in question was treated as a consumer.
What I find disheartening from that perspective is not just the short-sighted leftists who don't see that eventually power will once again change hands, but also that many "red-pilled" people currently fighting against censorious sjws are equally myopically taking refuge in habitually censorious conservative Christianity. Can't we have a little foresight and reject all of these moralizing monoliths?

There's those that see themselves as the Thinkquisition - they (think that they can) decide what are acceptable thoughts, words, language. They'll feel the need to not only catch out, others external to their group, but to show within their own group - that they're the most pious.

Best summary of the state of the West in 2019. Sadly only 20k views for something everyone should see.

LIONEL SHRIVER is just one of the reasons I subscribe to THE SPECTATOR each week. May I also plug PETER WHITTLE's site, "SO, WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IS....." on UA-cam. Like these boys, it is another site for the thinking individual (like MORGOTH'S REVIEW). Great point about the shift in power within our Universities, from the Faculty (ie the Academics) to the bureaucrats and administrators: most of whom will not have a degree, and certainly not above a Bachelor-level. These peoples' inability to think things through, and to analyse them correctly, is why students can run riot around the Academics.
