Creepy Rides: Tales of the Okefenokee

- Tales of the Okefenokee was a dark ride at Six Flags Over Georgia based off of the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris. It opened during the park's opening season in 1967, and closed in 1980. This ride features some creepy looking animatronics, and some frightening imagery.

I was looking for videos about the Tales of the Okefenokee ride after watching Defunctland's video again, and this popped up. Good job! According to Tim and Kevin, there's not a lot of information on this ride out there, so it's great to see folks keeping the history of an obscure ride alive!
Speaking of Tales of the Okefenokee, I'm curious to know who wrote the music for the ride back in the day. The queue music (is it "The Legend of the Okefenokee"?) sounds a lot like something written by the Sherman Brothers. It sounds like it would be right at home in an old Hannah-Barbara movie!
Thank you for watching the video. I actually got the idea after watching Defuctland's video, (his channel is the best). It does sound like the Sherman Brothers type of lyrics, and it took me about 3 days to research all of the information for this ride. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. -Jake
I remember very well riding this when I was a young kid. The main thing I remember was it was cool inside, with all the water and I THINK air conditioning. Dark inside, water trickling everywhere. It really was like you were in this weird cave but it felt good from the intense heat of the summer.
It sounds like an atmosphere that matches the feeling the pictures of the ride give off. Do you happen to have any footage or photos from when you went on the ride?
@@fifeparanormal6164 No, sorry, so long ago it was just a memory. For a very young kid it did have a magical quality about it, because as I said it was so dark, and primitive. Actually I recall it being even DARKER inside, than shown, with only dim lights illuminating the various "scenes". You felt like you were underground.
@@Caesar13ism When I was watching some of the videos of the ride I could tell it probably was pretty dark in there and that adds to the creepiness in my opinion.

You're right. The most creepiest part of the ride for me was the part with the pitch black and snakes only and nothing else.
I think that part would've given me nightmares. lol!
I though the title on the video meant that the ride was uncannily and unintentionally creepy in a bad way, but it turns out that it was Surprisingly and unexpectedly creepy in a good way!

I rode this ride so many times as a kid in the 70s--- you forgot to mention the Southern sherif animitron who said "Stay Out of The Swamp!" as the crows warned, "go back, go back, go back!" as the boat lifted up and then dropped into the "dark" part of the ride.
Hmm? That one most be really rare therefore there is no documented pictures of it, in the late or early 70s????

The whole area was very much like a nicely-shaded garden, with tall lattice walls, gazebo-like structures here and there, and lots of pine trees and well-maintained vegetation. The facade of the ride building itself was little more than a giant wooden box constructed of board-and-batten walls, while a protruding section to the left of the building featuring the entrance tunnel was veneered with white clapboards. Both inside and outside the queue area were numerous plywood cutouts of all the various characters seen throughout the ride, some of pretty dubious quality.
