Have owned Fierce rifles for going on 10+ years now and have been singing their praise since! Bought a couple of them for my sons and they both love them just about as good as you can get for not getting into the customs. Hunted with the 300 win mag for 30 something years and have taken about everything other then bears. Having collected hunted and reloaded for 60+ years have owned a lot of rifles but the 30 calibers are my favorite even now. These days I hunt with a Sako in 300 wsm. And will probably hunt with it the rest of my hunting days because it does everything I need without to much recoil!

Everyone seems to have forgotten one of the all time great .30 caliber rounds. The 300 H&H Magnum. I have a Ruger No. 1 in .300 H&H and love it!

@@NCWoodlandRoamer 300 H&H was my first 300 Mag. Loved it but when loaded hot the case stretched quite a bit in my Model 70.

The shorter and fatter trend, with shorter actions has been around a long time.

I’ve had many different rifles and calibres over the last 50 years, Hunted with a 303 Brit and 300 Weatherby for a couple decades.
The rifle/cartridge I have been going to though for the last 10 years is a Husqvarna 30-06 light weight with 20 in bbl. Topped with a Leupold 3x9, it checks most of the box’s from lightweight, reliable, accurate and handy. And with a TTSX 150 @ 3080 loaded with Big game powder, I feel confident hunting Elk in BC grizzly country .
The hype with calibre craze and marketing the last 15 years or so is entertaining and a head shaker, what they’re claiming to achieve has all be done before…many decades ago! just look at when the 300 Weatherby and 300 win mag was introduced, 7mm STW, 264 win mag, 284 in, 257 Weatherby etc etc , the arguments are about accuracy, light weight and short action?? Well, again it’s all been done before and short action vs long lol, again marketing ploys.
Roy Weatherby’s line up was invented before most of us were born , today new marketing is only matching and any gains are really insignificant.

wsm and the ultra mags work for all the stuff I hunt , I have most of the rest collecting dust in the vault , always grab the browning stainless stalker in 300 wsm

I love the 300 Win Mag and the 300WSM. I can’t see that I would ever benefit from any advantage of a more powerful 300 magnum on the market. Great video and thanks for sharing!

Firm believer & user afield with 30-30 and 30-06, all I want and need! If going above Canadian line or across the big ponds, I've said I'd get a 300WM, conquer the world! Good truth on your video!

I was never much for newer round and hype that went along with them. Hard to beat 30 cal. rounds with so many choices for reloaders.

  • @exothermal.sprocket
    @exothermal.sprocket Місяць тому

Agreed. There's ways of stretching even the smaller casing of .30-30 to make it do what people may not believe, within range.
Terminal ballistics is something of a science not many on the internet ever explain or talk about. Any discussion of animals boils down to how big and tough something is, how much weight the beast possesses. None of that matters. The projectile is only poking through one small portion of that animal and hopefully in the correct spot. The rest is down to projectile construction, enough impact speed to open it. Not much difference between a white tail, vs mule deer, vs. elk... just inches of internal stuff to hit. Bones are not cast iron. Hide is thin in a lot of cases. Muscle and fat is not kevlar. Lungs are mostly air and a few layers of tissue. It's down to projectile construction and putting that thing into the CNS zone to end the fight.
A lot of the government rules about caliber boil down to a dislike of lousy shots by lousy hunters and an attempt to minimize it. I would say the worst reputation of failed hunts is archery.

I’ve had a lot of .30cal’s…. The one that I’ll always have in the safe is my 30-06, it just seems to be the most practical all around.
I’m a fan of the .308 Norma mag as well tho I sold my last one a few years ago it really is a pleasant round to shoot.
I have a 300PRC Bergara B14 HMR in my safe I’ve been playing around with and it offers little improvement over my last 300WM custom I built BUT it’s nice having a non belted case… but “nice” should not imply it’s any kind of a deal breaker, it’s just a nice improvement.

I was pretty sure that .30 was where it was at for me too. I sold everything bigger and planned to make the handloaded 30-06 be my "Big Gun". Then I got to look at a few brown bears up close and it didn't feel so big. I still find the '06 and .308 real useful, but have picked up a couple bigger ones for Alaska.

30-06 and the bigger 30's cover a lot of ground. I like my little 270win but lets be honest the 30cal simply has the ability to pack more freight. Just a fact when it comes to something like a bison.

The advancement in recent times is the very low drag projectiles, and the faster twist required to stabilize them. Such projectiles were developed after the advent of radar-based chronograph technology for these ballisticians where they can take ballistics readings thousands of times in a single flight.
Such things require modified cartridges for length restrictions and other things.
Within reasonable distance (up to 400 yards or so), none of it matters. Truly. Pretty much any .308 caliber cartridge is going to push the pill fast enough for terminal kinetic transfer and turn organs to mush.
.30-378 Weatherby to my knowledge is the quickest factory .308. That will move a 200gr at over 3,200 fps (26-inch barrel).
