Has it been decided what the next dinosaur the show is going to feature? Based on the comments I've seen it appears to either be Ceratosaurus or Quetzocoatlus(even though Quetzocoatlus is a pterosaur). I think Megalosaurus should be on the show.

I always found that the weirdest thing about Carnotaurus's arms was that it didn't have elbows, in fact it didn't have a radius or ulna at all, it appears to have just had a humerus with assorted hand bones on the end. Either the other arm bones and the joint just fused together or they disappeared entirely I'm not sure. But the whole thing is made weirder by having them attached to a scapula proportionally bigger than other dinos with much bigger arms.
Just odd.
The scaps were there for the neck, lats and pec muscles. Abelisaurs were tremendously muscular creatures.
I study palaeontology as a student and next month we are covering Abelisaurid arm morphologies. I have written a quick summary on Majungasaurus Crenatissimus and it is similar to what you state
Less arm muscles required leaves more room for others, so the arms just slowly shrunk

The Carnotaurus vestigial arms stored inside its body is a headcanon that I personally believe. Is it scientifically accurate? Probably not. But I like it and that's enough. It's just a mouth with legs.

Carnotaurus has and will always be my favorite dinosaur.
The thing I like about this video is that, even though the figure is very close to accuracy (like you said, the most accurate you've gotten so far), you still manage to hit 20 minutes. It is a kind of great trade off, where you can either spend a lot of time 'fixing' a hilariously inaccurate toy (while also explaining a bit) or spend a lot of time explaining things about a very accurate toy. Can't wait for the next episode!
I love these drawings and animations. Perfectly visualize the point, look relatively simple and yet very good and compelling.

I know this isn't a very important detail, but I always prefer depictions of the carnotaurus with its arms tucked flush with its body, rather than sticking out like normal arms, because it feeds to the vestigial nature of them, and the fact that they had virtually no uses for their arms.
Mazzetta in 1998 which theorized inter-specific combat of the horns for predation. The paper claimed that due to the thickness of the skull and the neck, Canotaurus may have been able to use its skull as a battering ram and thus make it the first predator discovered to use these features as weapons. This is thanks to the thickness of the skull and the heavily muscled neck absorbing the shock of impact. Ramming prey would've stunned or killed smaller targets. In a way, this makes sense as a pursuit predator. If you look at a cheetah or a falcon, their main objective is to disable a target once it gets in range before finishing it off - cheetahs will often trip the leg of an antelope while falcons grab flying targets in dive bombs. Carnotaurus' style was unique, but was likely another skill in a long list of tactics seen in nature.
Modern science says _Carnotaurus_ couldn't hunt with its' horns for many reason: horns are too short, no predator had horns like _Carnotaurus_, and its' head is weaker than they look.
@animalman57 Actually, the horns would've been covered by a strong keratinous sheath. What size and length of these horns they would've been in real life is unknown. Now, I read the papers again and it turns out that the power is stored in the neck, whose vertebrae was large, thick, and heavily muscled - allowing this animal to absorb a large amount of force. The horns would've been able to distribute force. The head was also rather thick and covered with small osteoderms which would've helped keep its brain safe from collisions. In short, modern science involving combat use of the head shows that it was indeed possible for this animal to attack rivals AND prey.
Deadpool3E only issue is that it’s horns pointed upwards and to the side, making them basically useless as weapons. Also last I checked, modern research shows that it’s head wasn’t designed for high speed head smashing, it would break its skull and since it seemed suited for hunting smaller game(it shows adaptations in its jaw that seem to allow to unhinge its jaws somewhat and could likely use its top jaw like an axe like allosaurus) then it physically would’t be able to ram them at all.
The thing is, carnotaurus was adapted to hunting prey that was small to medium sized prey. The reason I bring this up is because of carnotaurus’ size. It seemed to around 3 metres tall and at most 9 metres long, why does this matter? Because I doubt it could swoop its head down while it’s running without falling over. It could maybe do that to medium sized prey, but that would still probably hurt the carno. It seems to be more likely that the horns were used for display, or slow pushing battles for males. They’d maybe slowly push each other during mating season until one male gives up.
James Athersmith maybe the horns were used to take out larger prey? It seems to be the most likely possibility if Carnataurus did use them for hunting.

I had a McDonald’s happy meal toy, hand puppet, of the Carnotaurus from Disney’s Dinosaurs when I was super little and that thing terrified me. At the brave age of 5 I got to see a life (ish) sized statue in Orlando and I ran from it.

I can just imagine Carno running next to a prey item and slamming one of it's horns sideways into it's preys neck or head, and tbh it probably could've done that because of the amount of muscle it had lol

I think it used it head as a stunning mechanism. What I mean by that is that it charges its prey, hits it with its head causing some damage and knocking the prey somewhat to the side, stunning it a bit, and then using its chance to start to bit the prey
Whats crazy is The Isle (the game) really took the anatomy of the dinosaurs and applied it to their in game dinosaurs. For example, the part where he says the trade off with maneuverability and acceleration due to the structure of their tail muscle. The carnotaurus in game is the fastest dinosaur with the slowest turn radius in the game. I thought that was very cool

I have this toy on my desk! This company makes some of the nicest dino toys. Even the ones that aren't that accurate are sculpted really well.
Speaking of Godzilla, I came across a Bag O' Dinosaurs containing a pretty accurate Godzilla in with the tail dagger dinosaurs.
I think there was a documentary that speculated feathers on the nub-arms used for display. Unlikely, but cute.

What sucks is that all we know of the fauna of the Carnotaurus’s habitat is that “there were hadrosaurids” and “we found an ankylosaurid osteoderm” and that’s about it. We know there was another albelisaurid and a few other animals. I hope another expedition is done so we can get a better understanding of the other animals in the area.
There was also turtles, snakes, and other animals but I would like to know or see the more exact dinosaurian species in the area.

Yeah, my biggest problems with this figure are the pose and the tail.
There needs to be a Secernosaur toy. Even the Field Museum keeps the holotype in storage even though there's a great mount at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturalis Bernardo Rivadavia.

I've loved carnotaurus ever since I found out about it and it's one of my absolute favorite dinos. I just love the juxtaposition of its ferocious appearance and predatorial skill with its dinky little arms. (It always makes me sad when art or toys make the arms too big because that's what makes it so endearing to me)
The video game The Isle lets you play as a carnotaurus and I was actually super impressed by its accuracy considering the featherless rexes and raptors (though it definitely has the same problems with the foot scutes and possibly oversized calves the toy in the video does) And it's play style is exactly accurate to how you described it hunting, with amazing speed and stamina but an obnoxiously wide turn radius (which has the added effect of forcing the player to favor open terrain instead of forested areas just like the animal itself.)
I guess tl;dr is that I love carnotaurus and would recommend The Isle for other fans of this beautiful creature

personally besides butting rivals and display i think its horns might have been used to mark territory by gouging notches in trees sort of like some species of deer do. also as for predation i could see them running parallel to there prey and swinging those horns into the legs of the prey to slow them down so it can get some strikes in with those jaws.

Carnotaurus was one of my childhood dinosaurs, its amazing how unique was even among other theropods
the neck muscle build in combo with the leg/tail build suggests that the carnotaurus did a lot of high speed shunting, as if to topple larger dinosaurs to expose their underbelly? the neck muscles are built for impact and leverage it seems and the more momentum you can slam into something the easier it is to topple. and looking at most of the herbivorous dinos it seems like getting up from laying on your side was a very vulnerable position to be in, it would also help the carno to avoid all the defences that other dinosaurs like the stego and kentosaurus had built up
Maybe the arms are only used during mating to stop the male slipping off, and claws to stop the female running away
I don't think they could move their elbows, though. So they weren't able to use their arms for anything.
Carnotaurus' arm sockets were ball-jointed and had an absurd rotation range compared to pretty much every other theropod. Clamping down on a partner would be more than possible.

It's just me guessing but I think their horns are used similar to how giraffe's use their ossicones.
Ossicones are skin covered club like weapons, and they use it by moving their neck in a whip like motion, swing the clubs to the target. Carnotaurus are probably doing the same thing
Instead of striking head on like how deers and moose do. Carnotaurus probably swing those horns. Maybe their goal is to sprint towards their prey, and as soon as they reach the head or the body of said prey, that's when they strike. And considering how sharp the horns are, it may not enter the body (which is better, you don't want your horns getting stuck in a running prey) but it probably can fracture bones, especially the rib cage, and cause trauma with the organs. Now that's freakin dope!
Kinda like a much faster, carnivorous sprinting Giraffe. Capable of swinging its head side to side while running.
This is the first of the videos I've seen by NSI, but I have to say I am amazed at this young man's depth of knowledge and obvious passion for his field.
IMHO, he should design and collaborate with some artists to put out a scientifically-accurate set of dinosaurs.

I like the thought of it attacking like a giraffe with it's big ol' head mace. Unfortunately, that seems like a waste of all that forward momentum, so perhaps more battle-axe. :P
I think the horns may be to small to ram effectively but used it in pursuit to disbalance the prey and a way to trip or cause it to stumble to help finish the prey off and stop the chase to a finish
I only watch these videos because the animations are so satisfying.

with such a short mouth i would imagine it would be fairly difficult to grab hold of a running creature with a bite (which with its lack of grabbing arms it would need)
however with the fact its clearly a sprinter, its huge neck muscles and the large horns, could it have predated by effectivly charging its prey, slaming its horns into the side of back of the prey animal injuring it or knocking it down, and then biting onto it while its down?

I have a theory here. Perhaps those huge, head-aiming neck muscles could have allowed carnotaurus to whip its head sideways like how giraffes fight. Why it would do that, I have no idea, but...

Wow, the description of Steven at the beginning was really clever and funny.
Looking at where the horns are positioned and where the eyes of this animal are positioned, I feel like they're probably pretty good protection from injury for the dinosaur's eyes. Potentially from intraspecific combat - you could even picture them kind of duelling with their horns but I feel like "poke each other's eyes out" seems a bit of a high-risk strategy. Maybe more likely the horns made it hard to bite the face during more conventional combat.
That or display. Or likely both.
If you think about it. Carnotaurus is an animal that has low mobility correct? When its pursuing prey wouldn't it probably be more effective for the animal to knock its prey to the ground and then make the kill to prevent its prey making sudden sharp turns? Perhaps it could have used its horns to simply aid in knocking small or medium sized prey to the ground
I suggest getting the Rebor figure, named Crimson King. The only inaccuracies I can spot are the tail being too flexible and the width of the head. Perhaps you can spot more? Also, I was under the impression that Carnotaurus's fingers are fused together (which in the Rebor figure, they are not). I also doubt Carnotaurus had a blue tongue (which the Rebor figure does) but i guess we have no evidence to the contrary. Some extant reptiles today have blue tongues (such as the Blue Tongued Skink). The arms on the Rebor figure can rotate, which can allow you to place the arms either in an accurate or inaccurate position. The scales on Crimson King are deeply defined and the scutes are VERY defined and pointy. I wouldn't give it to a kid to play with. I also love the neck of the Rebor figure, which seems very accurate. He also comes with a crackled cooling lava base that doesn't represent the natural habitat of Carnotaurus but it accents him very well. Beware of possible warped legs, as Rebor seems not to put any packaging between the legs to prevent warping from being laid on its side for too long in its own packaging. The foam packaging they use, however, seem to be of rather high quality. I love Crimson King. I also reccomend watching Trey the Explainer's video about Carnotaurus.
