Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3, Lamborghini Miura S, Workshop Catchup Part 1 | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

- Iain brings us up to speed with a number of jobs currently in the workshop. In Part 1, he introduces us to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3, a real wolf in sheeps clothing. Whilst it may not shout high performance to look at, the performance is staggering for a car of it's size and age, and Iain explains the secret behind that incredible acceleration. We also catch up on progress with the yellow Lamborghini Miura S, the Black Forest barn-find, which is now fully stripped back to it's core shell.
Stay tuned for Part 2 which will follow very soon!

Damned, when he opened the throttle on that old Mercedes... What a sound. What a car.
@Antonio Farina Well, he did a great job.
that blew me away... a 60 year old car?? damn...even though it has been restored..i can now see where AMG started :)
@@bobfrode Actually AMG started with the modyfying of the W112 300SE .They came second at Spa with one, beaten only by Fords multimillion dollar Capri .If you look at pics of the race that year you an see Alfrect and Waxenberger working in the pits during the race . Waxl wasn't supposed to even be there..Daimler was not supposed to backing car racing,so AMG got the task.
@@bobfrode I can't remember what model but I believe they nicknamed the first amg the red pig
You just don't get throttle response like that on a modern car, with electronic throttles and emissions controls etc. Most of them limit the speed the throttle can actually open :/
What a pleasant way to start my Sunday morning: another tour of Mr Tyrrell's world. Fascinating history of MB.
I know what you mean I totally forgot about all this crona virus stuff for 1/4 of an hour.
MoultrieGeeks with you 100%! A forgotten classic! A friend of my dads had the series W116 6.9. He was a landscape gardener. Proving the old saying ‘where’s there’s muck there’s brass’!😊
So can somebody please explain to me why every Mercedes driver I see is in the middle lane of the motorway doing about 52 mph with their main beam on?
@@MLB9000 Where do you live ?
@@ThomasColeFZ My house
This man needs his own television show, unbelievable teacher and my god what a setting (garage, vehicles etc) for him to share his encyclopedic knowledge with us, thanks so much for recording this for my children’s children.
I’ve recently found a local garage to me that have the same excitement for perfection as this gentleman.I’ve been searching for 35 years though. That’s how unique these incredible engineers are. They chose their love of cars very early in their lives, would be their pursuit of excellence.Very rare beasts.
Zimbabwean subscriber here. I absolutely love this channel and all of its content, and I was at first pleasantly surprised to hear my country's name pop up, but then deeply saddened that the environment here has meant that so many skilled people have had to leave. I love the level of detail and insight that your videos provide. It makes a big difference to us car nerds who are starved of exposure to the kinds of things that we would love to see, but have little or no access to such things out here. 👍
This channel is fast becoming a must see for anyone interested in cars! That Mercedes is beautiful 😍 I would love to have it my garage, if only! 💰💰💰💰
Yes, they are truly beautiful cars, in so many ways
In 2006 I was offered one (a 300 SEL 6.3)for $13,000
the seller asked me to drive it for 2 weeks before I made up my mind
needless to say, I drive it a lot during those first few weeks
however, I knew it's age, and it needed quite a lot of $ to bring it up to "as new" condition,
so I didn't buy it.
I'm still kicking myself for thinking with my head, not my heart!
When I was little, late 60s, we lived in Munich. My father told me of him racing one of these 6.3s in his Miura, he recounted that he could not shake the 6.3 on the straights, only in the corners. But, every time the road opened up again the 6.3 would haul him in. This was on the open road, not a race track! Always wanted one of these from his stories but had to make do with a 123 300D!
Wow, what a cool story.
The King of the W109 line AND a Miura in one episode, thank you UA-cam for sending me this. So many Jags and Italian delights. I will be scouring this channel for Porsche and Mercedes content.
Amazing how over half a century ago Daimler Benz engineers had a rough idea that pumping gas right into an engine's combustion chamber at a higher pressure than usual produced a big V8 with exceptional power, smoothness, and drivability. The grandfather of all of today's direct injection big-power gas engines. I'm sure Bosch took a lot of what they learned from this car in designing the CIS injection system of the 70's-80's and gave us cool stuff like the W116 6.9 sedan, Porsche 930, etc.
My old boss in 1976 had a 450 sel 6.9
When he used to send me from Worksop out to Cleethorpes I would get 8 mpg out of it. Sounded just like that. I had to tell the staff at Trustthorpe Hall to tell him I hadn’t arrived yet. 120mph was easy
Thanks for Sharing that 💝👍🏻
That 6.3 - a real 6.3 - sure does sound nice.
Can see, hear, why Merc is so proud of the 6.3.
I could listen to you talk for hours Ian, please do more content for us all whilst were in the inevitable lockdown. Talk about anything, people will thank you for it. That Mercedes is a beauty, can't wait for part two and the Muira rebuild.
Please stay safe, a friend of mine has the virus in Spain, very serious condition. Stay home folks, stay safe
I couldn't agree more. I would gladly listen to Mr Tyrrell share stories and insights for hours and I'd have a grin on my face the entire time.
“Hopefully that communicated in some way” I literally exclaimed F me when you first accelerated !
Having owned a '70 6.3 in the 80's: I have to say it is the one car I would pick over any other, if I could only choose one.
The only car I ever owned that literally had everything I wanted in a car. Nosebleed expensive to maintain but worth it IMHO.
How about a clean 6.9?
@@nathanrichmondhoag1021 I'm selling my last car, an 09 528, moving to Mexico and taking up walking. I never thought I would say it,, but I'm over car culture. I don't want to sit on the freeway at 70.
Many parts for them are simply no longer available. And good luck finding any mechanic who can work on them.
The 450SEL 6.9 was also ridiculously expensive to run and maintain. Apparently, few months after getting one, F1 driver James Hunt put his up on blocks and left it there for this exact reason.
That Mercedes is a revelation, love it
Is there nothing this gentleman doesn’t know about old cars. Perfect Sunday evening viewing.
12:18 "That's what you call throttle response" 😁👍
Awesome video once again!
This car is what we would call a "Dampfhammer"
I did not know the technical background, thank you very much, Mr. Tyrrell!
@Antonio Farina Paul Bracq. Better get it right...
@@nickbartman3250
It was a comparison to the level of brute power this work of art, and I agree with you there, is capable of producing.
@Antonio Farina And Engineered by Rudi Uhlenhaut and Erich Waxenberger
ua-cam.com/video/lNuXRDj1YUQ/v-deo.html If you do not know Rudolf Uhlenhaut born in London look at this.
The operating term here is "Throttle Response " Another beautiful Presentation of another one of my Favorite Mercedes. Glorious!
Is it me of is that the quickest 16 minutes ever.
Great insight to older engineering.
Older maybe ,better definitely.
Thats why you watch it twice lol.
Tam: I know, when I saw it was only gonna be 16 minutes, I selfishly and greedily said "Awww is that ALL?" Haha.
@@RustyPetterson I was hoping it was 16 minutes for every car in the workshop .....
I’m not exaggerating here but I could literally watch your uploads and listen to your chat for hours on end. Best car channel and without question most knowledgeable presentation I’ve seen.
Super. Thanks.
What a magnificent machine - the MB 300 SEL 6.3. Beautifully restored (I think - if the interior is as nicely done as the exterior). Iain, more content please. Yours is the BEST auto channel on all of You Tube when it comes to explaining things properly. No wonder Harry and his compatriots use your services. The best for the best.
Brings back a lot of memories. My Mother had a 1972, and we lived in North Atlanta where it is pretty hilly. Fortunately 93 octane fuel at the Amoco Station was about 30 cents a gallon because I think that car got only 8 MPG. Maybe less with the air conditioner on and a heavy foot. It was a very fast car even when full of my friends and we could be bad boys!
Simply dazzled by your historical knowledge, from manufacturers to personal details and technical matters. Such a pleasure to listen and watch and I'm sure these little moments will find there own historical value over time as these cars become even more rare. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I can’t get over how beautiful that engine-bay is; as clean as a surgical theatre! BRAVO to whoever restored/detailed the engine.
Wonderful that Mercedes Benz 300 SEL 6.3 W109, your restoration work, Mr. Tyrrel, is priceless and unbeatable, that car is equal to or better than new. All the cars he shows in his videos are in perfect used condition and in their original splendor, which gives us an idea of their build quality and the quality of their restoration work to keep them in their 100% original condition. That is the great value of his work, that future generations can appreciate all those beautiful cars, not only in museums, but also on the streets and avenues. Congratulations to you and to their owners, I am aware of the enormous effort and sacrifice you make to maintain and keep them that way.
This guy is a gentlemen genius. I really enjoy watching these and the Harry Metcalfe vids. Fascinating...I am just building an Me109 model aircraft and was wondering what the 'plunger pump' was, - thanks to Ian (Perfect timing) I now know. 👍🏻
This is the best car channel with Harry’s garage. These guys really know what they are talking about.
Just found this channel, this guy used to service my tvr on the Wirral he used to have a garage on the Wallasey dock road.great to see him doing well👍
I could watch hours and hours of these....thanks for the content.
It seems so refined and quiet in the cabin too. Surprising for the age.
gorgeous b-roll this episode.
I laughed out loud when Iain floored it. 😁
The Mercedes is just stunning, fantastic restoration. This was the fastest 16 minutes of my life. More, more...……………….
I agree! When the slide came up, 'To Be Continued' I said, 'What?!'
Antonio Farina Why do you keep posting the same reply to almost every comment? 90% of the time it has nothing to do with the original comment.
That 16 minutes went by really quick
Paul Bracq
6 plunger Bosch MFI pumps on 69-73 Porsche 911's. Awesome throttle response, unlike carbs they almost never need adjustments, and that GLORIOUS sound... Thanks Mr Tyrell!
Master!!
Oh my god that Mercedes! A dream!
Look how clean, even the engine bay.
"And then she flies"...I love this channel for the knowledge/specs/info/details and especially Ian's eloquence&smile when he finally puts the pedal down...;)
Marvellous. Seeing a Mercedes like this on the road was a rare sight when I was a lad.
That Benz is incredible... it looks brand new! Love these videos, thank-you for doing them Sir!
I thought I knew a little something about older Mercedes since I own two of them. But Tyrrell's knowledge on older cars is simply astoudning. Thank you for sharing some more insightful knowledge, as always!
Great video Iain. Really enjoyable. That Merc is really flies 👍
My team and I would like to thank Iain, we’re so excited for every new video!
When Iain said test drive I turned the volume right up, loved this, thank you.
Tha Merc...omg... Please keep giving us videos like this... This is top quality
Wow another excellent episode full of great information. Looking forward to part 2! Thank you Iain
My father had the 280 SE version of that car which also had the same type of injection pump. Even that back in the early 1970s had good acceleration for a heavy car... I never appreciated it back then but I have very fond memories of that car today...Thanks for making these superbly informative videos.
God we need more videos like this...what has started with Harry is now one of the best, most polite series on restorations, please keep doing this quality content videos...and possibly some more!
Love that Merc, the way the gunsight lifts up when you boot it.
Probably connected to the Luftwaffe fuel pump!
Lady here, amongst mostly men, without any doubt. I would like to thank you for all of your giving back. Wonderfully cheerful. Side to side to Jay Leno's garage it has become my understanding that this channel is a supurb addition. Specially, explaining the in and outs of certain cars which goes into much more depth compared to any channel I have seen sofar. xxx
Beautiful machine. Excellent commentary as well. 👍🇺🇸
Thank you for the vid. It's very much worth you making them because we all love them.
Best classic cars workshop on UA-cam
Mr Tyrell, you make 20 mins of happiness every time. I never knew the 6,3 was this fast. Imagine it with European lights. What a great car, what a great video. Thank you Sir!
Cheers Iain, that 300 SEL 6.3, in that colour, with that restoration ..... my goodness. :)
Wow just looking around Tyrrell's Classic Workshop I'm sure there are hours of footage for each of those beauties with a wealth of Iain's knowledge most of us would otherwise have no clue of, loving those tidbits, gold nuggets.
Thank you Iain you are a legend.
Another fascinating video. It made me forget about coronavirus for 15 minutes. Please keep these fantastic videos coming.
12:11 looked seriously impressive! Love this guy.
Of all the cars in Iain's workshop, the big Merc. is the one for me. no question.
Wow that was extremely interesting learning about the evolution of fuel injection and the system used on the 6.3! Great video!!
Great to see another episode and what a glorious example of the 6.3. Certainly a dream car for me. Thank you so much.
Hello Mr Tyrrel moral is important and at this time what you are doing is very important for sanity of all of us home trapped petrolheads so more content is badly needed even if it's only a ten minute walkaround of a car and why its in on the Eclat XJ12 or sl ect, so stay well and keep it coming.
May be Morale would be better if I could spell.
gck82s Agreed!
Really well produced vid .
No music, fantastic.
Just decades of knowledge.
Fantastic range of exotica.
Keep up the good works .
Beautifully restored 6.3 - thanks for showing it to us.
I'll second an earlier comment. The best Automotive channel on You Tube by a country mile! Well done Sir.
Informative, entertaining, relaxing. Nice work guys.
What a treat, this channel. Thanks.
This is my favorite all time sedan.
This series is excellent 👍🙂
Had the pleasure of driving one of these many years ago, also did a bit of work on it. Interesting rear axle on this Merc
Love that merc , I hope you can continue to upload videos in the next few weeks .
The thought of being stuck in the house with no new car videos is depressing!!!
Another great video! The 6.3 is still incredible.
I'm just glad there are no live cams in the workshop because I'd get nothing else done!
This video made me smile and am sure it always will. Thank so much.
Nice presentation, great job. Thx Tyrrell.
Just caught this what an absolutely beautiful car that Mercedes 399 SEL is. I am slightly biased I am a Merc man through and through but that car is absolutely stunning and the colour is perfection.
Detailed video, absolutely perfect. Subscribed.
Fascinating, as always. Thankyou Mr T.
I like this series because I always learn something new when I watch them. And there is no music disturbing. You are also a very good presenter. Keep on doing this wonderful programs.
The 300 SEL is a pure wolf in sheep's clothing! Good to see the Miura restoration is coming on as well. Another understated, yet very watchable video from Mr Tyrell.
Mr. Tyrrell , thank you very much ! You lit up theses dark day,s with your nice and warm voice .This voice is filling the air which so much knowledge. Oh sorry, i was sliding almost into poetry...........
Another brilliant lecture, thanks Mr Tyrrell.
Absolutely love your videos Tyrrell. thank you so much for providing such insight during a very strange time in the world. please keep them coming!
Adored the test drive! Thankyou for your uploads :)
A truly stunning car. Oh the sound. Lovely. Thankyou.
Such a good watch. Nothing better than listening to someone who really knows their stuff. I'm really enjoying your videos.
Thank you very much for still taking the time to put up these excellent videos - even more appreciated under the current circumstances!
Thanks. Such a joy to watch as per usual.
That was impressive for such a classic Mercedes. (And a fantastic sound too.)
Thanks for your efforts; stay healthy and safe.
Another excellent production!
Thanks!!
Harry Metcalfe brought me to your channel. I haven't regretted it for a single second :) Great craftsmanship!
What a car! That response and sound , there is nothing better than an old mercedes, love this car!
Fantastic video, as usual. Thank you for sharing.
Love this channel. Love the technical explanations of things and all the great cars.
Always fantastic to watch and learn from. Love this channel!
Fabulous and so interesting to have an “adult” talking about classic cars
Tyrrell's Classic Workshop, Where a 16 minute video goes by in 20 seconds.
This channel coupled with Ian(?) Is just absolutely class
One day in northern Tasmania I was driving along the main street of a small town and I saw the Benz 300sel 6.9 I had seen a few times before. Gleaming metallic silver with black interior. The driver was a short and thin elderly man with white almost shoulder length hair, dressed in black and wearing a floppy black beret. The tall and thin woman in the passenger seat was dressed in very elegant clothing. Ahead of me the Benz turned from a side street onto the main road and the driver then floored the car. What a sight, the car looked like liquid platinum in the bright sunshine. I had noticed the car and the extraordinary looking couple before. Back in 1970 or 71 a very wealthy relative ordered a Mercedes Benz 280sel 3.5 in a colour combination I have never seen before, in Europe or Australia, it was a rich beige exterior with cloth black and white houndstooth interior. 1990 he bought a new dark metallic blue Ferrari Testarossa.
Great memories!
Beautiful merc. And my god. Thing flies
