You just don't get throttle response like that on a modern car, with electronic throttles and emissions controls etc. Most of them limit the speed the throttle can actually open :/

Having owned a '70 6.3 in the 80's: I have to say it is the one car I would pick over any other, if I could only choose one.

The 450SEL 6.9 was also ridiculously expensive to run and maintain. Apparently, few months after getting one, F1 driver James Hunt put his up on blocks and left it there for this exact reason.

Zimbabwean subscriber here. I absolutely love this channel and all of its content, and I was at first pleasantly surprised to hear my country's name pop up, but then deeply saddened that the environment here has meant that so many skilled people have had to leave. I love the level of detail and insight that your videos provide. Yes, they are truly beautiful cars, in so many ways
      In 2006 I was offered one (a 300 SEL 6.3)for $13,000
the seller asked me to drive it for 2 weeks before I made up my mind
needless to say, I drive it a lot during those first few weeks
however, I knew it's age, and it needed quite a lot of $ to bring it up to "as new" condition,
      so I didn't buy it.
I'm still kicking myself for thinking with my head, not my heart!

When I was little, late 60s, we lived in Munich. My father told me of him racing one of these 6.3s in his Miura, he recounted that he could not shake the 6.3 on the straights, only in the corners. But, every time the road opened up again the 6.3 would haul him in. This was on the open road, not a race track! Always wanted one of these from his stories but had to make do with a 123 300D!

Brings back a lot of memories. My Mother had a 1972, and we lived in North Atlanta where it is pretty hilly. Fortunately 93 octane fuel at the Amoco Station was about 30 cents a gallon because I think that car got only 8 MPG. Maybe less with the air conditioner on and a heavy foot. It was a very fast car even when full of my friends and we could be bad boys!

The fuel injection system in the DB601 gave the Bf109 a combat advantage over the Spitfire as it supplied fuel constantly from the initial transition into a power dive. The Merlin was fed by a blow through carburettor system (RR favoured this for charge cooling reasons) and the petrol in the float chamber would be thrown awry starving the engine of fuel. To avoid this, skilled pilots would roll the Spitfire into the dive to follow the 109. But this was still a tactical disadvantage and a wily Messerschmidt jockey knew they could disengage from combat when required by diving away. An engineer, Beatrice "Tilly" Shilling (also a racing motorcyclist) came up with a baffle trap in the float chamber to negate the starvation issue. The modification was nicknamed "Miss Shilling's orifice".

The King of the W109 line AND a Miura in one episode, thank you UA-cam for sending me this. So many Jags and Italian delights. I will be scouring this channel for Porsche and Mercedes content.
Amazing how over half a century ago Daimler Benz engineers had a rough idea that pumping gas right into an engine's combustion chamber at a higher pressure than usual produced a big V8 with exceptional power, smoothness, and drivability. The grandfather of all of today's direct injection big-power gas engines. I'm sure Bosch took a lot of what they learned from this car in designing the CIS injection system of the 70's-80's and gave us cool stuff like the W116 6.9 sedan, Porsche 930, etc.

PS - IN CA, with its strict air pollution regulations, every single change and every part that goes on a car must be approved by CARB (CA Air Resources Board). BITD everybody wanted to remove CIS injection from the CIS 911's but could not due to CARB. However, to Mr Tyrell's point about them getting richer mixtures as they age, the Porsche MFI cars were the only vehicles in state history where CARB approved the removal of the mechanical fuel injection and allowed the use of carburetors. Even CARB knew carbs were leaner than MFI.

I absolutely agree. The growl and thrust of a 300 6.3 was staggering.
In 1970 aged 17 on P plates, the stockbroker father of a school chum handed me the keys to his white 6 month old 6.3 saying. "Tell me what you think" ...... My eyes lit up. I headed to the carport with his 16 year old son as my passenger.
They lived in Mosman. One of Sydney's longest steepest straight uphill roads is Awaba Street, from Balmoral Beach to The Spit Road on the crest.
From a standing start at the bottom, flooring it was mind blowing. I refuse to disclose how fast we were doing before sanity prevailed and I backed off.
Awesome machine. The Tesla S class of its day. Half a century ago.
10 years down the track the rear would sink overnight from the air suspension.
My friend's dad was an impatient guy and his son would be sent out 5 minutes ahead to start and rev the car so the suspension had risen..... Much slower than any ageing Citroen hydraulic suspension, with their very modest motive power....
Loved it. I washed the car to say a mega thank you...
    A very trusting man.
    I have owned many Citroens.
Supreme high speed tourers. Never speedy accelerators except the SM and GTI Turbo....
No match for the 6.3... What would a SM be like with 6.3 instead of 3.0??

What a beautiful car that Mercedes 300 SEL is, a real under rated classic. The Muira looks like its going to a fun restoration, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

1974 ... Brussels... I was appointed MD of a British Computer Software Company to manage its European Operations: Darmstadt, Paris, Amsterdam and Geneva. I was looking for a LHD German car. An American had bought and customized it to 6.9 ...exactly the same colour with European front Lights. He had been transferred and could not take it with him due to Emission Control of California. He offloaded it onto me. I was 32 then. It was a Super Limousine. Like everyone else, I had been a car man, but this one was just phenomenal. I am 82 now. I still remember my flooring the accelerator from Aachen ...She was like an Italian Cat in a big box. It was the finest car that I ever drove and owned. She was quite thirsty on Oil and Petrol but saved time. I should have never sold it.

What a glorious car. It is the sort of thing one sees (or used to see) wafting past, but never rides in.
I travelled (not my car) a few times many years ago in a 280SEL 3.5, which in my fast-beating heart I believed to be a sort of junior sibling to this 6.3 monster... What a sublime and rapid barge it was. And it cornered. Looked like a Stuttgart cab, went like a sports car and was just dreamily comfortable and well appointed. That was the 3.5.... I can only imagine what the 6.3 was like...
