Followed the advice - retuned my whole kit today. All in tune in under 5 mins...wow! I’ve never been good at tuning, but it worked. Floor Tom didn’t sound as good, but a few tiny turns and it was in tune - best advice ever!!
Take this from a guy who has made a living tuning drums live and in studio for 24 years. This is a cool no nonsense approach to quick survival tuning at gig etc. It’s great for guys with little to no tuning experience as a starting point. Other than that it has NO application in the professional world. Jazz, metal, fusion, hip hop kits are tuned totally different. If you tried to only use the “get the wrinkles out” method you would be fired at sound check.
@@matthewkjorvestad480 yea? But if you could figure out how much pressure to apply to the heads you'd be able to tune to pitch using this method. The more pressure applied to heads will require more turns to de-wrickle thus higher pitche.. You fine tune your top and bottom heads in relation to each other. Some people like more resonance some like more flat. All this is in relation netween top and bottom head tuning. I've actually done this and works all the time. Personally i like my top and bottom heads to fully vibrate. I tune equal for max shell projection.
Stock Fadi “If you could figure how much pressure to apply” You are absolutely correct. What device are you using to do that? The Drum Dial measures tension/pressure after you have tightened the head. Even with that thing you still have to fine tune. Question: Since you tune both of your heads to the same pitch, if you wanted to tune your 10” to E, what pitch are your heads tuned to? Or your preferred method of pressure?
@@matthewkjorvestad480 well when the 98% ever make it to the world your living in we can use a guy like you. Thank you Mr.Rob. I am 16 years old and I’ve been drumming since I was in 6th grade. I’ve always wanted to find the easiest way to tune my toms and I’ve watched so many videos of how to tune and all of those videos are so confusing, and i was really confused and it seemed really difficult and so many steps. So I stopped looking for videos of how to tune in 2022. Now it’s 2024, and I finally decided to watch another video of how to tune Toms and you got my attention with one word, “easiest” and it sure is easy. Although that video is now 10 years old, you helped a lot of people to tune their Toms In a timeless quick and simple way of doing it. I hope many people like me would find this video helpful and useful. Thanks again Mr. Rob and always keep drumming
Started drumming about six months ago at age 50 with an electric kit. Got my first acoustic kit yesterday and I was overwhelmed by all the complicated “tuning” videos. And then I found Rob‘s tuning video. 10 minutes later I’m jamming. Thank you!
I've played drums for 12 years now... and this was the hurdle I've never been able to pass until today. I think it only took me 10 minutes to re-tune the entire set and they sound fantastic!
I'm going to speak very earnestly. My tom/snare tuning ability has been an area of insecurity for me for all of my 20(ish) years of drumming. It's been extremely frustrating. You erased every bit of it in a less-than-6-minute video. Thank you. A LOT. My kit sounds terrific and I no longer have to feel supremely inferior to most other players. What you're doing really, really matters. Keep up the fantastic work. If you find yourself in Portland, OR, your first beer is on me!
Dominic Biscarret Exactly! Also, I was emphatically agreeing with your post, when I see you're in Portland, too. A cool coincidence. Maybe I'll see you around sometime, Dominic.
Love you' re videos. Just started with drumming after my son mentioned he wanted to play the drums. The drumvirus did infect us al. Watching you' re videos has learned me a lot about the secrets of a drumkit. Thx a lot for all the good advices.
Thanks for this, Rob. I've been waiting 23 years for this video. One of the reasons I switched to Roland V's was because tuning had become so frustrating to me. Now I need to get an acoustic set again and try this. Any suggestions for a great mid-range kit? I won't be dropping green on another Masters :/
This is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. This method is not only easy, but allows the tom to maintain its tone based on its size. What could be easier or more practical. Wish I had seen this years ago. Thanks a million.
like a lot of other people I'm seeing on this thread, tuning my toms is something i've struggled with since i started playing. i've watched so many videos on how to effectively tune drums and never quite got my drums the way i wanted them to sound after watching those videos. I watched this video and, after reading all the positive comments about this method, walked over to my drum set and gave it a try. honestly man, i've never been happier with the way my toms sound right now! thank you so, so much!!
I never comment on UA-cam but this post warranted a comment. I spent an hour tuning my toms last night and was unhappy with the result. Watched your video and tuned all my toms to perfection in about 10 minutes. Thanks for the KISS method of tuning brother.
Dude this video has changed my life! Been a self taught drummer for 20 years and my drums never sounded good. Always thought it was because of the quality of my kit but now my Toms sound amazing! Thank you for simplifying something that has forever been over complicated
Awesome tuning videos, man. I've been playing drums professionally for 20 years and after seeing these, it's the only way I'll tune from now on. No nonsense and great pure sound. Highly recommended! Thanks, Rob!
Holy crap. I bought my drum set when I was 12 years old (I'm 28 now) and have played a little off and on over the past 16 years. In that time, I have NEVER been able to get my drum set tuned right until I watched your video and tried this. I am in shock and awe. Thank you for sharing this with us. You've definitely just earned a new subscriber.
Dear Rob, I would like to thank you so much for this trick. 20 minutes and my 3 toms are tune. You are the best m8. No more torque key, no more key trick around the rim... TO THE POINT. Cheers from a novice drummer from Canada!
Rob I can't thank you enough for making this video! My drum teacher set up my new 4 pc Ludwig Keystone ProBeat for me and he tuned it up and had it singing so quickly it was kind of a blur. The weather here in Texas fluctuated around 40 degrees the other day and most of the kit was just fine. I had to tweak a couple of lugs on the floor tom. After I kicked the bass drum a few times kind of hard it sounded normal again. Snare was fine. The rack tom was making that "boing" sound that no one wants. I fought it for about an hour that night and gave up. I had watched your videos in the past and planned on trying your tom method out the next morning. This morning I followed along with you until you said "Boom! Guess what? You're done" and I hit my rack tom and it was just SINGING! I smiled so hard I got a cramp in my face! Rob you are a master and a great person for sharing your vast knowledge!
I'm a metal fabricator and I built a 15-piece aluminum drum set Rob iTuned all the Tom's by your instructional video and the sound is unbelievably good thank you so much for your help
Dear Rob, You have no idea of how valuable your guidance and tips are for drummers of different levels all around the world, your explanations, practical sense and inspiring vibe for the groove while playing drums is certainly a jewel in the middle of a jungle of distorted visions and unnecessary complexity in such a beautiful art of drumming.
Heartfelted words man, If I would be living in the states, for sure you will be my drum coach or teacher... that to me would an honour, Fortunately, we have this non-physical media to keep the magic flowing! Peace out bro!
This is hands down the most useful and correct tuning method in the world. I discovered your tuning videos and channel, when I was on a obsession course for drum tuning. I was way over thinking it, and your videos, especially this one, as it was the first I saw, revolutionised my tuning method. So I want to say a huge thank you, and thank you for putting all those players that spend hours on it and call it a "dark art" on a train back to Hogwarts! Also your channel is a huge inspiration for me, I'm starting out my own channel, so any tips you might have would be awesome. Thanks again Rob Brown - BEST DRUM CHANNEL ON THE INTERNET.
I tried this because I have a chain of gigs coming up and needed a quick way to change heads for those tight moments backstage. I tried it in my room and tbh, I'm never tuning 'scientifically accurate' again. I normally spend hours tuning toms matching pitches and what not to then try them in context and hate the sound etc. I tried this and it saved time and a lot of anger. I'll admit that when did it my toms sounded a bit high pitched for my liking so a bit of advice to any drummers who like me, enjoy toms to thump but still sing. Do this method then turn each lug a quarter turn down, place your finger in the middle again and if any wrinkles appear, just turn the lugs required a tiny bit at a time until they're gone. Sounds bitching. Thank you Rob Brown and I will be showing this method to any drummers I meet who struggle with tuning and sending them to your video. Save them money of these 3 hour long DVD's that teach them what you showed in a matter of minutes =)
"The backline kit always sounds like ass when u show up." Dude u so hit it on the nail with that comment! Your tuning tip is awesome. Thank u much, great job.
Man, I cannot thank you enough. This worked so perfectly for my toms! I can relate to turning tuning into a big dilemma, but you made it so fast and so simple for me that I was dumbfounded. No muffling needed on the mounted toms and just one piece of moongel needed for each floor tom. Amazing! You're a life saver dude! You need more subs, I know a lot of drummers that could really use your help. Thanks so much man!
Micol Cervantes Don't worry, dude. It ain't you. That's a very common thing with many entry level kits and the reason why is because of the tom mounts. When you tune a drum off the kit and smack it, it'll sound great because the shell is allowed to resonate freely while you're holding it by the rim. But once you get it on the kit, now you have a tom arm impeding or 'poking through' the shell, which will severely affect it's ability to resonate freely. That's exactly why drum manufacturers all started putting isolation mounts on their mid and high end kits years ago. You'll notice that all mid and high end drums now have tom mounts that don't go through the shell. One thing that may help you is to slide the drum out as far to the end of the arm as it can go without it falling off, then tighten it down. This will take some of the stress off the shell and allow it to resonate a little better.
This "slide the drum out as far to the end of the arm as it can go without it falling off, then tighten it down" is pure genius, man. I've got one of those
Dude, you have saved my life. For weeks I've been coming in to my church trying to tune the drums in the 15 minutes I've had up until rehearsal and not getting a good sound using all these methods on youtube. Saw this video and haven't had a problem since.
This method works extremely well even for drum heads that need to be thrown away. I like a deep fat sound for my toms so I like to follow the Rob Brown method. After I detune the top and bottom heads and then press my fingers down on the heads as I tighten each lug with my drum key, I like to make sure my bottom head is tuned high and my top head is tuned low. This works well for my Evans hydraulics when following Rob Brown's method. Rob has the easiest and best tuning method of anyone on UA-cam.
I've been doing this for years and I can't agree more. People constantly try to give you all of this "knowledge" on "how to tune a drum". I have always taught my students this quick , simple and effective method to tuning a drum. And, this method easily produces a rich, thick, well rounded tone from your drum. Overthinking the tuning process can be arduous, and to be quite honest, a little overkill. This is the best method to the madness.
Joe Reyes here just wanting to give you a shout out. After starting to drum in 1962 this is the best and easiest way to tune. Two weeks ago I tried your way, my kit never sounded that good! Thanks for taking the time to show us the simplicity of tuning. What a relief to finally find the way to a great sounding kit. God Bless You Rob!!!
I think ultimately........Rob is not trying to explain a "pitch perfect" tuning style. I believe he is showing drum tuning in an honest light. The AUDIENCE does not hear all the harmonic subtleties that we flap over. The audience does NOT hear what we, the drummer hears....our ears and perspective are much closer and we are positioned at the exact wrong angle for a realistic drum sound. We have spent so long playing the drums in the same position that we are accustomed to the same sound. What Rob is showing us is a drum tuning that allows for an open, powerful sound that doesn't take a science degree to achieve. I have used his advice and I have now become a practitioner of this tuning style. It is a quick, effective open sound for live venues.
The audience hears everything that you the musician hears (except where there are physical limitations). The difference is they cannot pinpoint and isolate different variables that you the musician can. Everything adds up.
Holy shiiiit!!! 15 years of drumming.... and tunning was allways a pain in the ass for me.... I just can't tune my toms. they allways sound like crap. And the main problem was the little time that i had to tune at stage. Tune in a hurry was impossible for me... I was in the middle of this video and I just couldn't believe this. I tried anyway. There was nothing left to lose... And it actualy worked! A week ago in soundcheck I did this and oh man oh man! Thanks Rob Brown! Awsome.
With cheaper drums, a little more tuning time is necessary due to the hardware flexing a bit more than good hardware. And new heads make a huge difference as well. Thanks for the advice on the quick tuning technique, I'm going to try this tonight. I've been trying to tune them just like you were saying, listening for all these sounds and what not, BLAH!!! I like this much better. It should work fine with intermediate to really nice drums. Thanks Rob.
It took me 1 1/2 hours to tune the drums to where I could tolerate the sound produced. What this video showed me was a MUCH faster way of tuning the drums. Truly amazing and saved my butt when tuning my church’s set. Thank you so much Rob!
Jeez, I just finished watching a Bob Gatzen DVD for 2 frikking hours before I came here and found this. Have a sub. ps watched late last night, so too late to do anything.Played around with it today and it's sounding way better.I'm just amazed at how little tension there is in the batter/reso compared to where I would normally have it. Having said that my kit always sounded weird.
im a complete beginner and i bought a cheap drum set and i had no idea how to tune anything, i watched a bunch of those videos you talk about and i just felt completely overwhelmed and lost. i tried to do it and i just couldn't get it to sound anywhere even remotely good and im a musician so i have a ok ear for notes. just tried your method and immediately sounded just like how they are meant to sound. you sir are a genius and a gift to humanity.
This is THE BEST tom tuning video I've ever seen. I tried it, and it works! I wasted lots of time with a tunebot, only to find the results less than desirable. This method made my Toms sing! Great job man, you've got a new subscriber.
This is for a low base tuning but if you want to be picky and have a higher or lower tuning of your drums then yes you need the fancier stuff to a certain extent
Rob, I can't thank you enough. It took me less than five minutes to retune my whole kit because I used the double drum key method you taught me from another video to loosen all the heads. Thank you so much!
This is why your channel is the best. Your advice, lessons and techniques are always straight forward and practical without the b.s. Always looking forward to future content. Thanks Rob!
THIS DUDE JUST KILLED IT 🤣💪 Just about killed every other "tune your drums" video out there "alright, kiss my ass, you're wrong, you're wasting my time and I'm right" and guess what? He was ! 😁👍 Much appreciated video !
This is by far the best approach to tuning toms on the Internet. It is simple and it really takes full advantage of the tone of whatever drum you are tuning. Great tutorial
Are you friggen kidding me ! ?!?!? I can't wait to try this on my 6 piece kit. Right now I'm going to a buddy's house to help him tune his Slingerland's . I will try this for sure! bOOm !
Changed my tom tom heads today and tried this method of tuning. I couldn't believe it actually works, not only that with a little tweaking I got the sound I wanted, the kit has never sounded so good. Thanks for sharing 👍
It should based on the same principle but snare drums sometimes can be tricky due to the fact of the wires. Just make sure to have the right tension and wire placement to get the best results (also depends on the tune you like - high/medium/low). Good luck!
This is the most helpful video I have seen for tuning drums. I have been a musician for many years but just recently took up the drums because the church needed a drummer. I got a set of drums and have worked and worked to get them to sound good and yet after watching your video I had them tuned up and sounding good within 30 minutes. I can't tell you how grateful I am. Thank you, Thank you.
Thank you Rob!! I've been struggling to get my toms to sound good for years. No problem with snare and bass. I have watched countless of videos and i can't believe how amazing my toms sound now, Feels like a dream. Can't believe that it took me this long to search on youtube for "tom tuning easy" and how easy it actually is. I can't thank you enough, You're a genius and I think everyone should know this! I'm gonna share this with all the drummers I know, and all the drummers i'm going to meet! Thank you Rob, you're amazing!
I honestly wish it were this simple but it's not unless you don't care that much how your drums sound. I think for a very generic sound and using thick heads it won't matter much and this method could be useful for that sample situation that you described (out door festival, need to change heads in a hurry, etc..) but how often does that happen? I find the sound I want is achieved by as close to perfect tuning as possible (getting the sound next to each tension rod as close to possible) and with the bottom head slightly higher in pitch than the batter head.
as a semi pro drummer of a few years, i was always close, but it seemed hit and miss- sometimes theyre cannons sometimes theyre plastic pots. this is THE BEST TOM TUNING VIDEO/ADVICE i've come across, nice one dude!
This literally has blown me away. I'm not gonna lie, I had my doubts about this method working as i just seemed to good to be true. I couldn't have been more wrong. Tuning has been a pain in the ass for me for years. I've tried different methods, spent a lot of money on good shells and differend heads with different results, some worked fine, other not as much. But I never really was 100% happy with how my toms sounded. Now I've tried your method and holy shit does it work fine. One quick adjustment of the head and some detail tuning and I've got killer sounding toms in under 10 minutes. Together with your snare and base drum tunnig methods I've got a very good overall sound in like 15minutes if not less. Thank you so much dude, this has been a god send to me. Greetings from Switzerland, stay awesome.
The thing which I like about Rob Brown is, he simplify the complicated thinks, and explain very easily , I like your attitude man, keep rocking Rob Brown....
I just replaced all the heads on a new kit I just got and used your method (again, been using it for over s year now) and it worked great as usual. My drum teacher even complimented the tuning when he came over for my lesson. Thanks again Rob!
This is by farr the best video for Drum Tuning i have come across. I had a gig lastnight and the 2 top toms were totally out of tune and we were about to go on in like 20mins. Tried this trick from Rob and what you know, both toms sounded really good, killer instinct sound. Thanks Rob for sharing this. i saw this video couple of weeks back and i downloaded it to my smart phone and luckily lastnight, it saved me BIG TIME. keep them videos coming Rob. Band mates were really surprised at this awesome trick because i actually didnt use the drumbot tuner they had. lol. Again, Thanks Rob for the video.
This is exactly what I do without having my hand in the middle. But I've watched so many videos where they tighten one screw up and to the next screw on the exact opposite side while using a stick to hit the head. I'm glad to see I wasn't too far off from this video. This truely is way easier than other drummers make it sound like. And just from one hit on your smaller tom it sounds great. Thanks for the video man. I don't have a drum set anymore and I haven't drummed in like 4 years. But I just built a kit last night and it's going to sound BEAutiful. Thanks again for the easy video man!!
Just bought an old Tama Starclassic kit with die cast hoops. Swapped all heads between my old kit and Tama and was struggling with toms on both kits, especially die cast. This totally worked! Is it perfect? No. Are they totally playable? Yes!! One thousand times, thank you!
Dude I watched like 50 videos trying to find a good way to tune my toms and none of them could get the natural sound of the toms to come through. I tuned all of them in 10 minutes using your video and they sound perfect. Thanks!!
Rob, I started watching you THIS month and I've been playing percussion for 10 years, I have learned so much from you that my teachers in the past either didn't know or just didn't share. Please keep up the good work! You're amazing.
Holy cow. Rob. You are a genius. After digging one of my kits out of storage, 5 minutes watching you on my TV, then 10 mins in front of the kit - Boom maple custom sounds like thunder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!
Rob , I tried tuning my Tom's today just exactly how you showed on the video and WOW man your spot on . I can't thank you enough , no more spending hour's doing it the old way . Thanks again for the heads up. Mika
Incredible, this has restored my faith in playing drums. Ive been playing for 20 years, have tried tuning drums many times and lost time and patients so been relying on friends. Thankyou!
we recently got a drum kit for my sister; it’s not new in any sense of the word, but I’ve played on it a lot the past few days. I needed to figure out how to tune the toms properly, and wanted to find a short way. this video seemed authentic, so I gave it a watch. I came down to the comments to see what others had to say, and it seems this works wonderfully. I’m about to try it right now; but from a beginner student trying to learn drums I think this technique might be the best I may ever get. :) please keep up the amazing works.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I no longer have to sit by the piano with a drum for 20 minutes trying to get the "correct intervals". This is much more effective and time efficient than any other methods I've seen. Thumbs up and subscribe.
I have been playing for over 25 years. This is absolutely the most useful tuning tutorial I have ever watched, tried and loved the result. Thank you, wish I could have all of those hours spent tuning back. More time playing, less time tuning now. My Pearl Masters Birch shells never sounded as good as they do now. Thank you
5 stars for this one, been watching video after video getting nowhere with harmonics and all that nonsense. . You have made it clear and simple and it works a treat. A big thumbs up from the UK
Gooo Rob!!!! Best damn method ever!!! I've been playing for over 40 years and finally.... someone with the moxy to show how it's done the right way...the drummers way to tune!! Thank you bro!
Rob, hello from England. I'm at practice now, tuned my whole kit with this method and I am finally happy with the tom sound.. I've tried everything, tune bot, drum dial but have never sounded this good before. The whole band sounds better now. Cheers man.
I know this was posted a couple years ago but I have been looking for a video or app to help me tune my drums in a simple method without as you said all these extra complicated steps with the history and biography of drums or what have you basically just prolonged videos of how to tune your drums while people show off themselves playing is all I have found until now you are a master you are the king thank you for the simple short instructional awesome video it works perfect I recommend this video to anyone
I am so glad I found your video. Becoming a drummer, learning all the little things outside of actually playing, tuning was what I was most intimidated by. I just went downstairs and did exactly what you told me, and now I will purchase new heads with confidence. Thank you!
2017 and this guy's still helping people out 👍 My friend lent me a not-so-old kit, which I decided to tune by myself (take note, I have never actually tuned a kit before so basically I'm kinda clueless). Then I saw this video. Man, bless your soul and your whole family. Like, for real man. Peace o/
I tried this and it worked pretty good for me. it got me to a great starting point and i just dialed the rest in. for years i struggled with tuning drum heads and then i saw your quick and easy tuning method. Then i checked out how you tuned a snare drum...Boom!! Thanks Rob!! love your videos man.
Dude, this is the best. all the time i have spent in the past and i could never get them to sound they way i wanted.. for non-pro drummers, this is the best. thanks for making it so easy, I have show this to other drummers and they love it.
I learned this method through experimentation but basically the same. I tech professionally for some pretty high level bands and I can honestly say, this method WORKS! It's quick, easy and takes all the mystery out of tuning. I've been known to use a tune bot, mostly on some stubborn drums or just to make sure tunings are replicated dead on in the studio, but for the most part, i agree, drum tuning is made out to be like its some sort of magic. Every FOH/Studio engineer I've worked with loves the sound of drums tuned this way, which is basically as low and fat as you can get them. It works for pretty much all music styles out there. I think this is a great video for anyone looking to learn how to tune. Well done Rob! Great video! oh, and you're totally right, back line rental kits ALWAYS sound like ass!! LOL!
Hey man, thank you. I got back on the horse after a 12 year hiatus with a new setup and gear. Bought new heads and found your video. Followed your steps and man everything sounds great. Again thank you for this video.
Just wanted to say that I tried this technique and it works great!!! A real time saver AND the drums sound great too!! No more endless tapping around the edges to get it all pitch perfect! I wish I had learned this back in the 70's. I used to dread changing heads because it was so time consuming and never seemed to sound quite right. Thanks!
Dude! I just followed your drum tuning videos, and you are spot on with the technique! I used to take this elaborate, holistic bullshit approach to tom tuning, and nothing ever worked until yesterday when I retuned my whole kit in just minutes. Just above wrinkle; and BOOM...perfect tone, no overtones, perfect sustain on each tom. Also acheived Max Thumpification on the 24" Kick.....followed all your tuning videos...worked exactly as you stated! Thanks!!
Rob Brown this was awesome and really helped. Looking forward to playing service tomorrow.
Rob Brown yea man very good advice I show this too all my tuning guru friends lol
Jason Lee you can get a Yamaha stage custom birch it's a really nice kit and the sound is top notch
This is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. This method is not only easy, but allows the tom to maintain its tone based on its size. What could be easier or more practical. Wish I had seen this years ago. Thanks a million.
this video changed my life.
like a lot of other people I'm seeing on this thread, tuning my toms is something i've struggled with since i started playing. i've watched so many videos on how to effectively tune drums and never quite got my drums the way i wanted them to sound after watching those videos. I watched this video and, after reading all the positive comments about this method, walked over to my drum set and gave it a try. honestly man, i've never been happier with the way my toms sound right now! thank you so, so much!!
When Rob said, "it sounds like ass." 😂
Rob I’m back again after first seeing this video 7 years ago!! I’m back retuning a new kit and these videos have done it again for me!
I never comment on UA-cam but this post warranted a comment. I spent an hour tuning my toms last night and was unhappy with the result. Watched your video and tuned all my toms to perfection in about 10 minutes. Thanks for the KISS method of tuning brother.
KISS method? Is that where you get piss drunk during a recording session and start screaming at Gene and Paul to get you a pack of cigarettes?
Jason Lee it's "Keep It Simple Stupid"
When Rob said "sounds like ass" I was in tears laughing, he said it so casually.
Dear Rob, I would like to thank you so much for this trick. 20 minutes and my 3 toms are tune. You are the best m8. No more torque key, no more key trick around the rim... TO THE POINT. Cheers from a novice drummer from Canada!
This works equally well for guitar players. Just tension the string until it's tight and then they're ready to hit the stage.
I tried this... it ended very badly.
Rickard Langnesund no..... just no..
Rickard Langnesund lmao
LOL .... gotta tell our guitar player before next rehersal....;-)
Rickard Langnesund lmaooooo
Love all the fantastic feedback, y'all! You're all very welcome :)
WOWZ, Salvador! Thanks for those great words of encouragement, bro :) Much appreciated!
Heartfelted words man, If I would be living in the states, for sure you will be my drum coach or teacher... that to me would an honour, Fortunately, we have this non-physical media to keep the magic flowing! Peace out bro!
This still holds up in 2022! I fucking love Rob’s videos I’ve been watching him for years
Subscribed, liked, shared, and commented! I used this for my floor tom and now it sounds like god baptized it. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Coolest comment ever, right there. *Fist bump - explosion*
Rob Brown Rob, would this work on my bass drum and my snare? I saw your snare tuning video the other day, but cant seem to find it now :/
Thanks
Just search 'rob brown snare' or 'rob brown bass drum' for those vids.
This comment is gold!
Beatdown's method is legit... been tuning drums for 20+ years and never have I arrived at an excellent tom sound so quickly. Many thanks for the tip!
+Tyler Bailey Spread the word, dude. I'd like more subs, too! lol 🙂🇨🇦
God bless you my man, I mean that from the bottom of my heart
This method works extremely well even for drum heads that need to be thrown away. I like a deep fat sound for my toms so I like to follow the Rob Brown method. After I detune the top and bottom heads and then press my fingers down on the heads as I tighten each lug with my drum key, I like to make sure my bottom head is tuned high and my top head is tuned low. This works well for my Evans hydraulics when following Rob Brown's method. Rob has the easiest and best tuning method of anyone on UA-cam.
Dude you're like Neil deGrasse Tyson of drums! Cheers
except ROb's science isnt fake
@@champ8288 exactly :D
I've been doing this for years and I can't agree more. People constantly try to give you all of this "knowledge" on "how to tune a drum". I have always taught my students this quick , simple and effective method to tuning a drum. And, this method easily produces a rich, thick, well rounded tone from your drum. Overthinking the tuning process can be arduous, and to be quite honest, a little overkill. This is the best method to the madness.
I never could properly tune a drum till now I would spend too much time trying to make my toms sound perfect this is an easy simple solution.
Wasted half my life tuning... tried this a couple days ago and toms sound really good
This is THE BEST tom tuning video I've ever seen.
Yup
Rob, I can't thank you enough. It took me less than five minutes to retune my whole kit because I used the double drum key method you taught me from another video to loosen all the heads. Thank you so much!
Holy cow, Rob Brown!!! Where'd you learn that? Brilliant!
This is why your channel is the best. Your advice, lessons and techniques are always straight forward and practical without the b.s. Always looking forward to future content. Thanks Rob!
THIS DUDE JUST KILLED IT 🤣💪
Just about killed every other "tune your drums" video out there "alright, kiss my ass, you're wrong, you're wasting my time and I'm right" and guess what? He was ! 😁👍
Much appreciated video !
THANK YOU!!!! This Helped A Ton!! Does It Work On Snare And Bass Too?
It should based on the same principle but snare drums sometimes can be tricky due to the fact of the wires. Just make sure to have the right tension and wire placement to get the best results (also depends on the tune you like - high/medium/low). Good luck!
This is the most helpful video I have seen for tuning drums. I have been a musician for many years but just recently took up the drums because the church needed a drummer. I got a set of drums and have worked and worked to get them to sound good and yet after watching your video I had them tuned up and sounding good within 30 minutes. I can't tell you how grateful I am. Thank you, Thank you.
This worked really well on my floor Tom, not so much on my 12" Tom but still great
Same...
Steve Percoco nah man I always did it the opposite I wanted my top tom higher then the bottom but just a little
Steve Percoco LoL.. augh sounds like another crappy drummer who blames bad drumming on "Out of Tune" drums..
as a semi pro drummer of a few years, i was always close, but it seemed hit and miss- sometimes theyre cannons sometimes theyre plastic pots. this is THE BEST TOM TUNING VIDEO/ADVICE i've come across, nice one dude!
You are using "the lowest tunable point". I like my drums low and a do it almost the same.
This is by far the best tuning method I've seen on UA-cam. I've been using it since I viewed this video and it always works like a charm.
I approve this video, but when it comes to studio recording, you gotta take some time to make them sound chumpy
Same here I've always had trouble getting in a good snare sound but after watching his video now my snare has never sounded better.
Back line always sounds like ass. Aint that the truth.
I spent 22 mins watching a drum tuning tutorial which got me nowhere. I watched this for 5 mins and the tuning sounds golden. Thanks rob
A low effort method for getting really average sounding drums! What the world truly needed!
I think they sound great
The thing which I like about Rob Brown is, he simplify the complicated thinks, and explain very easily , I like your attitude man, keep rocking Rob Brown....
'Preciate it, man. Thanks! 🙂
Cool stuff, dude. Glad it helped you out. :)
I don’t care what anybody says. This method is amazing. My kit sounds dope and took me about 5 minutes. Thank the good lord for this video!!
Thanks!!
No sweat, man! Glad it helped you out :)
A big thumbs up from the UK
hands down...this is the easiest, quickest way to tune. Thanks Rob for solving YEARS of tuning frustration.
Gooo Rob!!!! Best damn method ever!!! I've been playing for over 40 years and finally.... someone with the moxy to show how it's done the right way...the drummers way to tune!! Thank you bro!
Been drumming for many years and would never have believed this until I did it. Unreal that it works. Thanks for the great videos Rob.
You just saved me a whole mess of time and trouble. I'm a guitar player learning drums, this totally made sense to me. Once again, thank you Rob.
Rob, hello from England. I'm at practice now, tuned my whole kit with this method and I am finally happy with the tom sound.. I've tried everything, tune bot, drum dial but have never sounded this good before. The whole band sounds better now. Cheers man.
Really wish I'd seen this 20 years ago! So simple yet so effective - the only tom tuning video you'll ever need to see. Thanks so much Rob!
Thank you!
Thanks man. Ive been drumming for 24 years and finally Ive found a simple and no nonsense way of tuning my kit. Awesome
Thank You! This legit helped me tune as a 1 month beginner. Finally got a tom sound I like!
2017 and this guy's still helping people out 👍
My friend lent me a not-so-old kit, which I decided to tune by myself (take note, I have never actually tuned a kit before so basically I'm kinda clueless).
I have a special admiration for people who are simple and on point! It's never been astrophysic science! Thank you Rob!
Thanks!!
+Andy C Dude. Awesome. You've just earned your black belt in tuning. Thanks for sharing, man :)
