My almost 4 year old daughter and I were at this game. (She is now 37) She was so confused as to what was going on. Then when the crowd started throwing items onto the field (including batteries, coins, & cups) she was a little scared. I knew this game would be etched into my mind forever.
Regarding a possible source of the batteries thrown on the field ... About 35 years before smartphones, people would bring transistor radios to baseball games. I was given one such radio as a gift in 1975. My transistor radio was the same length and width as the smartphone I am holding now, except it was an inch thicker, and it housed a 9 bolt battery that could easily be removed. My radio came with an earphone that would remind youngsters today of an earbud. The earphone was connected to a wire with a plug on the other end of the wire. The wire plugged into the radio audio feature.
Guys actually played to win and wanted the team to win. Nowadays it’s how much money can I get and make the fans pay for tickets and beer to see a mediocre sport.
I was actually at this game lol. We sat in right center, in a little section of blue seats that were completely covered by the second deck thankfully, one of the only outfield sections that was covered like that. All you could see was it raining nachos and beer. There was a give away for the first 10,000 fans that day of a commemorative golf ball with reds on it. This is why the umps took cover and left the field, some people started throwing them.
@@tadpole8677 hey asshole, nobody is debating whether or not The current hits leader in Major League Baseball gambled on baseball but I can guarantee Pete Rose never bet against himself or his team. So what is the fucking issue with you? Nobody else will ever break his record of hits and he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
I was at this game when I was about 8 years old. Does anybody else remember the cup of mustard that got thrown on the field? It stained the turf and was visible through at least the following football season.
Private Equity Manager - Esasky was actually a third baseman, but yes, he should’ve threw it home, regardless. Esasky was a very talented player, and had a great future, but after he was traded to the Braves, he developed vertigo and it was the end of his career. Pretty sad.
That's what I was thinking. Why stop and wait for a call? Maybe there were two outs? Still.... make the throw. The announcer is not correct in that 1st does not have to wait for the call to make a throw.
Dave Pallone was the worst umpire I ever saw. In this case he not only blew the call but he poked Pete Rose right under his eye. Maybe Pete shouldn't have shoved Pallone but I don't blame him. Can you imagine if Pallone did that to Billy Martin, Earl Weaver or Lou Piniella? They would've decked him in no time flat. Fortunately for baseball Pallone was out of the game a few years later.
Did Pallone really hit him though? It's hard to tell there. Either way, he was a horse's ass for hanging out after the other umps surround Rose. Pallone should have walked away to diffuse the situation but instead stood there smirking in Rose's face. A lot like CB Bucknor.
@@juliebraden6911 If you look closely, just before Pete shoved him. Pallone poked Pete just below his eye. Pallone wanted the power instead of the satisfaction of being a good umpire.
From what I saw, Pete Rose was furious and very demonstrative, but he never got too close to Dave Pallone. He kept moving around in a semi-circle but didn't get up against Pallone. It was Pallone's moving up into Pete's face that forced the issue (right around the 35-36 second mark of the video). If I was in Pete's shoes I'd have done the same thing, just to get him out of my face.
Jerry: Rose pushed him. No ifs ands or buts. And you can't do that, no matter whether the umpire gets "in your face" or not. If you watch again, you'll see Rose is the definition of "in yer face" here. I understand him being mad, but that's no excuse.
@@brianbaird1503 Pallone wrote in his book that he never touched Rose. I have never seen a manager or player shove an umpire no matter how heated the argument got. Im not the type to call someone a liar without proof but I think Pallone is a liar.
Broadcasting crew said the call was late. That’s true. Broadcaster said because the call was late, Esasky wasn’t able to throw home. Not true. You make the throw home even if you hadn’t seen or heard any call, as action is still ongoing.
that does not matter, you still need to make the play until you hear the call... safe or out.... the umpire is not part of the play.... you first baseman should have made the play to home right away.@@EPA18
Sorry....Mcarver is correct....the ump has to make that call ! Throwing home only concedes the runner at 1st safe. Also...the ump struck Rose first and then Rose shoved him.
Agree. If the runner is stealing with 2 strikes and 2 outs you don't wait to see if the pitch is a called strike you just throw to the base he is stealing.
Although I never lived anywhere near Cincinnati, I just happened to be driving by Riverfront Stadium at the exact moment this happened, listening on the radio. Weird.
And now for the rest of the story: Yes you were a hateful umpire and carried grudges against certain players, namely Davy Concepcion (you were quoted in a San Francisco newspaper as saying that you intentionally did things on the field to disrupt his play, including standing in his line of vision on the field) and Jeff Reardon (your quote "I'll bury you"). In September of 1988 you quit umpiring because you were a scab, the union hated you, you took everything personally on the field and the league pressured you to resign. THANKS FOR RESIGNING !!!
LOL.....just to point out, the striking umps wanted more money....a bunch of them quit, thinking that it would force the league to the negotiating table (and that MLB wouldn't accept their resignations). The umps got the shock of their lives when the league called their bluff, accepting the resignations....but they knew what might happen, or at least they should've. Oh well.....they made their beds, then they had to sleep in them. No sympathy from me.
No you are incorrect. Pallone was forced to resign by MLB bc they thought he was part of a teenage sex ring, which he was never charged with, and he was found to be innocent of. They fired him for being gay, and then had to pay out an undisclosed 7 figure settlement to him when he had MLB dead to rights.Know your garbage story. www.mcall.com/news/mc-xpm-1998-11-20-3224648-story.html
Exactly. You can't assume a thing. The umpire was wrong in not making a call but the first basemen was wrong in not doing anything. The fans were angry that day and rightfully so but throwing things on the field is unacceptable. Pallone was forced to resign after an article "outed" him later that year. Forced to resign because he was gay. Not because he sucked as an umpire.
***** Also Rose should have reemed the 1st baseman Esasky after the game for letting in that run. Not even the announcers mentioned anything about "not assuming anything" in baseball, lol!
Announcers then and now are horrible. At 2:37 they are whining about the 1st base coach getting in the way of Esasky...Esasky never even looked to home. If you watched only Esasky on the play you would never even know there was a runner going from 3rd to home. Announcers...they truly ruin the game by mis-educating the viewers. Those terrible coaches and parents at the youth ball fields are taught their ignorance from the homers on the local games and the idiots on the national broadcasts.
+eight inches My thoughts exactly. The first baseman has to be watching the runner regardless and make the play to home just in case. I don't understand why he nor the announcers ever picked up on that. Yes, Dave Pallone was wrong for not making an immediate call like he's supposed to but Esasky should have made the play to home anyway.
My god, this brings back so many memories. This was my first time watching a baseball game at Riverfront stadium and the crowd noise was amazing. What the video doesn't do justice to was the fact that so many people were chanting "Pete! Pete! Pete!" after he shoved Dave Pallone. I remember at some point trash was getting thrown into the field and the game was delayed for a while and the Pallone left the game. Sadly the Reds lost that day, but my god this was a memory I cherish to this day. The most eventful baseball game I ever got to watch in person.

You got that right! Same thing with NFL football - unwatchable reality television in the context of football. Baseball, you see these pitchers with their oddball windups that are, in my opinion, straight up BALK. Just pitch the damn ball normal Yeah, 80s to around mid 90s baseball was the best. So many influential players playing at that time. I saw Daryl Strawberry crank one in the upper deck of Three Rivers Stadium against the Pirates for his 2nd at bat, good for 3 runs. That was back when he was the “hated” player in baseball, the entire stadium chanting “DAAAAR-YLLL… DAAAAR-YLLL” Daryl has since got himself together and goes around giving talks at churches around the nation. The purpose was to cause sensory overload in the audience by pumping them with fake propaganda videos that would change and repeat at high rates of speed ZOO TV even caused Bono to lose touch with reality, as he got to experience it every night while being the center of attention. It was highly intoxicating to him, and he began to grow a massive ego. Man, I read the Pallone book and was a Pete Rose fan too. Anyone who's followed Pete knows he would not be above making Pallone's poke in the face worse by doctoring it. I think he did. However, it is VERY obvious that Pallone got him in the face, probably accidentally but cardinal rule if life, don't EVER hit a dude in the face. For years I thought I Pete made it up but seeing it again, you can see Pallone nailed him, and Pete almost immediately, to Eric Gregg explained why he went nuts.

That umpire was an incompetent idiot. Make a damn call! You’re right there! Then it looks like the idiot pokes Rose in the face! That’s why Rose shoved his dumbass. The ump should go back to the minors.
Pallone was the one who actually leaned in and made first contact. He made contact with his chest and then he pointed into the face of Rose and seems to have made contact. Unprofessional behavior for an umpire? Umpires should be more capable of controlling their emotions than what we see here.
@@thomassmith350 yes he did his hand got Rose in the face when he pointed at him thats when he then shoved Dave Palone. Dave Palone started that entire thing that being said Pete can't touch him.
Remember Gregg's punching out the guy with a strike three call that was 1 foot off the plate.........that was it, he was forced to retire shortly afterwards
It was the playoffs and it wasn't just one guy. He was punching batters out left and right on pitches nowhere near the plate. Sad he passed away but he was a horrible umpire.
As an Umpire, 1B umpire allows 1B coach to draw a line in the dirt and make the call for him. Pete Rose has every reason to be upset. Umpire then finger pokes him. Both the Umpire and Rose are wrong on this one. Rose should not have bumped the umpire. The umpire baited Rose into the bump. In my opinion after 20+ years of umping including 1 year of Pro and 12 of College, this is a great example of how not to handle a situation.
I understood the suspension of Rose for this contact was the heaviest ever until that time, maybe since, do you know? Rose seemed to have that effect on people, literally they loved him or hated him.Bart Giamatti hated him, ha.
I don't think Rose was wrong what so ever. I'm tired of seeing the assholes putting there hands on player and baiting them into an altercation. Rose should broke Pallones nose. But for that f*#king Union the league had to punish Rose. Bullshit
It's good that they took him out. Not only did he instigate that shove from Pete (and you can say whatever you want about Pete, and believe me, I can say plenty), but the crowd would have eaten him alive for a late night snack if he'd stayed in the game.
I was watching Reds coverage of the game. Marty Breneman was yelling “on air” calling Pallone a scab, ripping the guy, ranting & raving. So, of course, Marty’s later elected to the MLB HOF.
@@brooklynwilbury4446 Yes, Marty Brennaman is in the Hall of Fame. He was elected to receive the Ford Frick Award in 2000, so he's in the broadcast wing of Baseball's Hall of Fame. I would love to hear that whole Marty & Joe call of the thing. It has probably been erased from the archives.. lol Both announcers got a chewing out from the commissioner for their on-air comments. But it was great. Kind of the beginning of the end for Pete. I kind of agree with Marty & Joe, they reacted and told it as they saw it.

Pallone got the call right, but was out of line when he escalated with the contact with Rose. The 1st basemen must have known he pulled his foot, and wasn't going to get the call. I assume there were two outs, so he was waiting to see if the Mets at bat in the inning was over or not. Can't blame a slightly delayed call for lack of situational awareness by a paid professional player.
@@HankFinkle11 a delayed call prevents the first baseman from throwing home? Please explain how. The Reds 1B looked home immediately when he got the ball. Why? He knew he might not have gotten him out. Anyway, the U1's call is never immediate; the ball could be dropped, the runner could be tagged, etc. This one was on the Reds and Rose going nuts was on him. The level of hatred towards umpires/officials is just astounding. Its no wonder why no one wants to do that job and why youth leagues will be obsolete in the near future. People like you will deserve it.
Poor Dave Pallone? He got into umpiring in MLB when there was an umpiring strike one year. He was hated by almost everybody and made tons of calls like that for years. I never felt a bit sorry for him! In fact he was sorry!
Only problem (and I was a Mets fan back then) is that Bill Robinson should NOT be on the field. You can't have a first base coach pointing at the bag on the field. The runner from 3rd needs to go back. It's a dead ball.
Rose got a 30 day suspension for bumping the umpire in this game. This reminds me of the Roberta Alomar incident in which he spit on an umpire during a playoff game in the mid 90's. That bad part was that he did get suspended several games at the beginning of the next season when he should have been suspended right on the spot for the remainder of the playoffs & world series. The reason he didn't get it right there is because we did at that time & still have the sorriest excuse for a commissioner that there ever was in Bud Selig. I thought Bowie Kuhn was bad till this moron came in to the picture. There will never be another commissioner of baseball that was as worthless ad Bud Selig.
bartha75 I stand corrected and thanks for that. He did miss several games at the beginning of the next season though. My point is that the punishment for what he did was not nearly stiff enough. He should have been hit with a heavy fine as well as missing at least 30 games at the beginning of the next season. What he did was far worse than what Rose did. And Adam is right. Bud Selig has been a disgrace to the game. No one who is part owner of a team should be the commissioner as well.
onehstrybuff pallone did not quite. pallone allegy involved in a teenage sex ring with a friend. was fired. pallone is gay and had affairs with players, at least thats what he says
The best part of this video? The message at the end from “Marge”, asking that the fans not throw objects onto the field. Apparently, Marge Schott was the lone voice of reason throughout this chaos, LOL. 😂🤣
There are still so many unanswered questions about the character of Dave Pallone. I read his book, and aside from being a union busting umpire, what bothered me most was the incident in upstate New York where he was present at what was literally an orgy party featuring underage boys. He claims he was taken by surprise when he saw one of the boys walk into the den of the house while only scantily clad, and was upset with his hosts for having people of that age present. However, he fails to explain the gap of several hours between when he first saw one of the boys in the house, and the time he actually left the house. Moreover, he writes about he cheated (he claims only once) on the guy with whom he was involved at the time (and who would later die in a car accident), hardly the mark of a credible or upstanding person. He is now partnered with a guy young enough to be his son, which goes further to explain his propensity toward unacceptably young attractions. Sorry, but I am really having a hard time with his crusading.
I can't stop laughing, that was great. Love the fan reaction, hapless groundskeepers meaninglessly picking up debris, and Pallone running for his life.😅

I was driving in Clifton that night (just North of downtown and RIverfront) and heard that call and SO wished I was at the ballpark. I'll never forget Joe Nuxhall's classic and most emotional on air comment to Marty Brennaman--- "He's a SCAB anyway!! A SCAB UM{PIRE!!" Which was true because Pallone crossed the picket line and got his job during the umpire walkout. Joe and Marty got called to NY to answer for comments they (Joe) made...but they stuck together. Years later, Pallone had some kind of sex charge against a minor or something brought against him though I do not know if he was guilty or even arrested. Shitty umpire, though.
Hey Pallonedotwhatever, here's a better description: Pete was upset with me because I failed to do my job as an umpire, which is to make a quick and decisive call, and eventually got thrown out because I lost my temper and poked him in the face as a result :( He was fined $10,000 and suspended for 30 days for his actions, I received no punishment because I'm consider myself above the players and managers......
Bonds didn't bet on baseball including games he managed. If you put Pete in you have to go back to the 1919 Chicago Black Sox Scandal when they banned 8 players for LIFE for betting / fixing games... until they let Shoeless Joe Jackson in who had the series of a lifetime and was banned because they said he Knew about the fix... so PED's is not the same as betting on games... betting games in which you play or manage is the ultimate sin so to speak....
Bradley Updyke Yeah, and Bonds cheated his way to the greatest record in ALL of sports. He's a fucking disgrace, That's Aaron's record....And Roger Maris is STILL the single season home run king.
He was, and was pretty much not liked. And this sleazeball left out the fact he touched Rose first. Pallone should have received some disciplinary action for his behavior as well.
I wonder why Pallone wasn't fined or suspended for touching Pete? I also wonder why Pallone didn't make the call the correct way like the announcers were telling us?
Well mine was also a retired manager for Venezuelan professional baseball, and I played with fire a night like this one....We were watching the game with his favorite time (Caracas Lions) with Omar Vizquel at bat down 5-3 with 1 out and a runner on 1st on the 9th...Vizquel was struck out looking with a ball on the far away corner (note: VIzquel was on his way to 1st but the umpire had a little "delay" on the call)....MAN! He was completely INSANE! He began yelling at the TV calling the umpire a piece of s*** and other bad language!! He even started breaking things....my mistake was to say "of course! that was a complete good call! hell yeah!" ***** I did not omit because i just said what he said on his book. I do not have to put his whole bio and events to quote him. I'm not go on a dispute on what he said he was fired for and on what the MLB commisioner said.
If you ask me the shove was warranted. That ump was getting incredibly aggressive towards Pete and touch his face with his finger. It's a disgrace Pete was suspended for this. It's also a disgrace today baseball robbed us of so many years that we would've had to enjoy Pete's passion for the game as a manager. Also instant replay has robbed us of these classic kind of arguments. They just don't happen anymore. Balls and strikes are basically the only thing that causes arguments now. I think baseball overlooked how essential manager and ump arguments are to the game when they implemented instant replay. I think they should only use it in post season. Maybe ONE challenge a game.
Agree with you on instant replay... but no player or manager may touch an umpire. It's a rule written in stone (just like no-one may gamble on baseball)... so Rose has no complaint here. He can argue the call, he can even call the ump names and get tossed... but he CAN NOT make contact, which he did - deliberately. There's no "Ya, but" in this. Rose broke several of MLB's hard rules. He is among the ten best players I ever saw play, yet I do not disagree with Giamatti's decision to ban him for life. Rules have to apply to everyone, even Pete Rose.
It's a disgrace he's not in the hall of fame. Should have been punished but not for life. He belongs in the hall. Period. I'm an O's fan too. Pete belongs in Hall.
MookieWilson, I swear this guy was always in the middle of everything in the 80s w the Mets. Him & Vince Coleman were the fastest players in baseball back then.
Esasky (whose career was cut short due to vertigo when he played for the Braves) should have thrown and hit Mets coach Bill Robinson, then the Reds could have claimed obstruction because a coach is not allowed in fair territory when the ball is live. Fans used to bring radios to the games to listen to the call (the stadium was set up so there was no seven-second delay like you would have if listening in the car at home - can't explain the process) and when Marty and Joe went off, they went nuts. This was when Bart Giamatti was the National League President and Peter Ueberroth was commissioner. I think the two shoves of Pallone was what got Pete 30 games. I read Pallone's book (interesting read to say the least) and he wrote that none of the other umps on that crew had his back but had to back the suspsention because of Pallone's scab status.
That is precisely why Pete Rose should never be in the Hall. Everything that happens in a game that he is involved in makes people wonder whether he bet on that game.
Stop the press. That solves it. I guess if 1 guy was suspended 1 game then that solves all the MLB umpiring problem. You've got clown's that the MLB wouldn't get rid of and when the player's/managers complained on some the MLB's fix was to fine player's/managers if they criticize umpires. MLB has always been a joke holding umpires accountable.
Esasky knew he was off the bag. By trying to steal a call, he missed the chance to throw out the runner at the plate. Pallone being late with the call was only a secondary reason for the run scoring. Rose should have been yelling at Esasky first, if anyone. As the saying goes, "Honesty is the best policy."
After watching this numerous times and it has been shown as part of training in the umpire association I'm in, the simple fact is that the first baseman should have thrown home regardless of what the call is at first base. Dave Pallone does not have to make the call right away unless the first baseman throws home; then he has to ring it up right away. I never rush my calls and I make sure I see it completely before making the call. I wish this video had a complete view of where everybody was on the field because this video is a good learning tool at a umpire clinic for new umpires. There is always something to learn.

The 1st baseman can't assume anything. Whether the runner is safe or out he HAS to look at the runner on 3rd. Never assume anything in baseball.
*****
Also Rose should have reemed the 1st baseman Esasky after the game for letting in that run.
Yes, Dave Pallone was wrong for not making an immediate call like he's supposed to but Esasky should have made the play to home anyway.
eight inches umpires are also supposed to make a call within a second or two not 5 or 10
My god, this brings back so many memories. This was my first time watching a baseball game at Riverfront stadium and the crowd noise was amazing. What the video doesn't do justice to was the fact that so many people were chanting "Pete! Pete! Pete!" after he shoved Dave Pallone. Yeah, 80s to around mid 90s baseball was the best. So many influential players playing at that time. I saw Daryl Strawberry crank one in the upper deck of Three Rivers Stadium against the Pirates for his 2nd at bat, good for 3 runs.
That was back when he was the “hated” player in baseball, the entire stadium chanting “DAAAAR-YLLL… DAAAAR-YLLL”

That whole thing is straight out of something you would see on some insufferable reality show. I, personally, would not just inject myself into that kind of a spotlight. He knew what he was getting into. And the fact that he made the conscious decision to become one of the main cast members of her own reality show… to me, that says that playing professional football isn’t exactly a life priority to him. He wants MORE. It’s narcissistic as hell, and the thing about narcissists is that MORE is never enough
It’s nice to see that her endorsement of the democrats was all for not. That will backfire on her even more so in the future
Another thing about football and baseball was when they began demolishing the dual purpose football and baseball stadiums, and started building separate venues for each sport - all funded by the citizens of each city, and NOT the team, nor the NFL / MLB… that’s pretty messed up
And they’re all architectural monstrosities with advertisements plastered everywhere, along with those giant LED video panels with graphics designed to create sensory overload in its attendees, who are then pumped with even more advertising and propaganda
The band U2 saw all of this coming back in the early 90s when they released that record, Achtung Baby and did that massive ZOO TV tour, which was the first band ever to employ those LED video panels, which looked like stacks of television sets tuned to different channels. The purpose was to cause sensory overload in the audience by pumping them with fake propaganda videos that would change and repeat at high rates of speed
ZOO TV even caused Bono to lose touch with reality, as he got to experience it every night while being the center of attention. It was highly intoxicating to him, and he began to grow a massive ego. But, he later recognized the issue at hand and actually sought some help to come off that high
But what U2 portrayed as a fictional tale of the future with ZOO TV… we are experiencing it right now, only it’s more the ZOO NET than anything. The point is they saw this coming and that was their way of informing everyone to be prepared… because minds WILL become warped once it gets here. And when it’s here; by the time you realize it, it will be too late. Some will be susceptible to the propaganda and will conform… and others won’t

Pallone got the call right, but was out of line when he escalated with the contact with Rose. The 1st basemen must have known he pulled his foot, and wasn't going to get the call. Bullshit. Why are the umps not accountable. It's obvious Pallone made contact with Rose.
@@richmatula931 It inadvertently cost him his career. Pallone is gay, and the public scrutiny from the situation led to a NY Post article where he was "outed". This led to Dave's resignation.
He did.
Or from a pay phone outside the managers office.
Rose is the greatest baseball competitor of all time. No one else comes close.
if you watch Pete Rose and all u can't think about is gambling, you are not a baseball fan. Rose is baseball. Most exciting player ever
Not, a singles hitter at best, arrogant fuck completely
He was arrogant because he hustled and went all out. And got RBIs when needed. Dependably. And he knew it. He also knew when opponents and team mates were dogging it. Justifiably arrogant.
@@scottgoodman8993 once a cheat, always a cheat. Take a Hank Aaron over him any day. Guy was humble yet put up numbers that dwarf Rose. Rose is where he belongs
Rose gambled. The one thing you don't do in baseball is gamble on it. All else is forgiven. Baseball comes before Rose.
@@joeylawn36111 Yeah right along with you assclown.
I was at this game, sitting down the first base line, right behind the bag, about 20 rows from the field. Mookie was out from here to Christmas and everyone knew it, including Mookie.
The whole place erupted in protest. Did I throw my big cup of Coke onto the field? Maybe 😁
Yeah, way to go with the Humility Pete. That crazy attitude got him in deeper waters later.
“How I spent my Summer Vacation.”
By Pete Rose
Pete had at least 20Gs on this game
I laughed out loud
That's all ??
WoW
That was original
@Lloyd Bonafide
What !!???
What are you talking about ???
For the redlegs to win
Dave Pallone, the 1980's version of Angel Hernandez
MAN UTD soccer is for fucking retards
Pallone was worse believe it or not! That is really saying something!
Pallone was super turned on when Rose bumped him. Called him safe on purpose and tried to kiss Charlie Hustle when he came out to argue!
M Soccer players ? Shit keep that crap in Europe where it belongs
Pete let his emotions get the best of him more than once.
True!!!!
I reject the concept that officials should be above accountability. They should have to answer for their failures just like everyone else!
I was the person who was not in attendance at this game.
Either you're too young for this story to be true, or you really need to stop trying to sound young by using the outdated SO thing.
The ump made contact first. The ump union was out of control until they all decided to quit and then had to beg to get their jobs back.
It always seems like Pete Rose is playing against the Mets every time there's an incident like this.
3:35 Dave Pallone's probably thinking. "Oh good I get an early start to listen to my Barry Manilow album and drink my White Claw!", LOL!
If they put fucking Bonds in the hall they better put Pete in first..
damn straight.
Agreed!
Bonds didn't bet on baseball including games he managed. If you put Pete in you have to go back to the 1919 Chicago Black Sox Scandal when they banned 8 players for LIFE for betting / fixing games... until they let Shoeless Joe Jackson in who had the series of a lifetime and was banned because they said he Knew about the fix... so PED's is not the same as betting on games... betting games in which you play or manage is the ultimate sin so to speak....
and he friggin lied about it on national TV and numerous times... so bet on games and lied to investigators ... he knew he was wrong...
Bradley Updyke Yeah, and Bonds cheated his way to the greatest record in ALL of sports. He's a fucking disgrace, That's Aaron's record....And Roger Maris is STILL the single season home run king.
As I remember, this ump worked as a scab during the umpires strike.
He was, and was pretty much not liked. And this sleazeball left out the fact he touched Rose first. Pallone should have received some disciplinary action for his behavior as well.
Pete “You just cost me 500 bucks!!”
Pete was made an example of and and as the comment said got suspended for 30 days.
I wonder why Pallone wasn't fined or suspended for touching Pete? I also wonder why Pallone didn't make the call the correct way like the announcers were telling us?
I remember watching this with my grandpa when I was a kid. I think he destroyed everything in the living room except the TV.
He even started breaking things....my mistake was to say "of course! that was a complete good call! hell yeah!" (Note: I hate that team)....he didn't speak to me for days....my grandma said that she couldn't tell how I survived that night....hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Pete must have bet on this game and this is proof that he didn't bet against his team.
Pete was INSANE for betting on ⚾️ but I don't believe he ever bet against himself or his teams...That's not what he was about...
"I'm going to be banned from baseball anyway, might as well get my money's worth."
"Hello, bookie? Yes, put it all on New York."
I was at this game with my brother and his friends for his birthday and my dad… I’ll never forget it
The Sports Writers need to make a Baseball Hall of Infamy. Then we give Pete Rose that award and that will be the end of it.
Wow! I was there on April 30 in the stands in riverfront stadium we went wild! I felt sorry for the boss Marge shoot, she was always very polite with US the fans! May GOD bless your soul Marge 😇😔😔 in
Heaven!!!!!!!!
Heaven? She was a Nazi sympathizer!
In September of that year, Pallone was forced to resign.
This fight was in April and he was fired in November of that same year. The reason was because he is homosexual.
+- Hugh - Good.
***** Pallone was allegedly involved in a teenage sex ring, but he was questioned by authorities and cleared. He was fired from the Puerto Rican League for not been available for a game that he was listed as a substitute. He took a vacation and he did have a gay affair. He said it on his book taht he was fired because he was gay. He also had a partner for three years (John) who died in 1982 in an accident. Does it look like i am omitting? lol
***** I did not omit because i just said what he said on his book. I do not have to put his whole bio and events to quote him. I'm not go on a dispute on what he said he was fired for and on what the MLB commisioner said.
Noah Hastings the.
Never argue or fight
It's a disgrace he's not in the hall of fame. Should have been punished but not for life. He belongs in the hall. Period. I'm an O's fan too. Pete belongs in Hall.
Pete must've had the under on this game.
Nothing to talk about these days for you, Eh?
@@toyman81 You are aware you are copying and pasting on two comments from 6-7 years ago?
What is missed on this play is.... good hustle by Mookie!
Mookie always hustled. A great ballplayer.
Mookie was average
MookieWilson, I swear this guy was always in the middle of everything in the 80s w the Mets. Him & Vince Coleman were the fastest players in baseball back then.
Funny you said that - even with all the action going on, that was my thought too.
Rusty Kuntz: Ricky Henderson anyone.
Rickey Henderson smokes both those fools
Gary Pettis was up there
Esasky (whose career was cut short due to vertigo when he played for the Braves) should have thrown and hit Mets coach Bill Robinson, then the Reds could have claimed obstruction because a coach is not allowed in fair territory when the ball is live.
Dave Concepcion is still playing baseball in 1988. He played in the 1970 World Series and 3 others since.
David Hogg survived this fight.
Pete must have had big money down on this one.
LMAO!!
He had the spread covered until that run.😂
"HEY! You just cost me a hundred bucks!!" -- Pete Rose ;)
@John Berg Why, because the truth hurts?
That is precisely why Pete Rose should never be in the Hall. Everything that happens in a game that he is involved in makes people wonder whether he bet on that game.
Methinks the ump should have gotten suspended too.
Ask MLB and they'll tell you umps are right 100% of the time no questions asked.
But of course.
cnralph that's not true, Joe west was suspended 1 game for touching a player
Stop the press. That solves it. I guess if 1 guy was suspended 1 game then that solves all the MLB umpiring problem. You've got clown's that the MLB wouldn't get rid of and when the player's/managers complained on some the MLB's fix was to fine player's/managers if they criticize umpires. MLB has always been a joke holding umpires accountable.
cnralph all I was saying that your statement was wrong cause with that 1 guy its not 100%of the time
Esasky knew he was off the bag.
