  • Traveling is something I have loved ever since I studied abroad in Denmark. Within five months I travelled to 10 different countries and I knew I always wanted traveling to be a part of my life. The world shut down for a while and caused my travel dreams to slow down. During that time I got chickens. But I knew I would not let that keep me from traveling, when the world opened back up.
I set up a self-sufficient coop so I could have chickens and travel! The systems set up in my coop are built to last a full week before needing to be refreshed. In this video I share details on my deep bedding setup, feed setup, covered chicken run, and the dust bath. If you want a closer look with more photos, you can head to my website chickenchaserbri.com for a full Coop Tour Blog highlighting each of the full setup.

My birds tend to free range, but if I'm not around I can lock them up in their run which provides plenty of room. No bedding accept in the coop. The chickens mostly leave their droppings outside where they constantly forage and scratch mixing the droppings with the earth. I never ever have to clean and it never smells. (I do occasionally clean the coop and nesting boxes and replace the shavings as they do tend to poop where they sleep.) For feeding I took a garbage can, stuck a couple of two inch pvc elbows near the bottom and filled it with feed. The chickens eat for a month without me touching it. It's also beneficial because it doesn't allow the chickens to throw the feed around and I'm not feeding every sparrow within a ten mile radius and so saves me quite a bit of money. For water I stuck some nipples in a pvc pipe connected to my water well. Endless clean water. (I do have to make other arrangements when we get a freeze in the winter.) I've found those water cups like you have tend to collect debris and the chickens have no problem with the nipples. If it's not too hot eggs will easily last a week without being collected because of the bloom. Vacation's not an issue. For dust baths I just toss down some wood ash from the fire place or the fire pit as I have it.

The water is there with the feed! It’s the tub with the red lid on it. Holds enough water to last about two weeks but I usually fill it with fresh water once a week when I refill the feeders!

Do you ever have issues with any of the chickens getting locked out because they don't get inside before the automatic door closes? We've run into this a few times, in particular when we have a really cloudy/dark day after a stretch of sunny weather.

I’ve never had any issues with it and I think it’s because the automatic door is on their enclosed run instead of the coop. So before it gets dark they all flock to the run to eat before heading into the coop for bed.
