Ah, this brings back a memory. At university I think I asked a Japanese exchange student about Japanese comedy or something and she whipped out her phone and showed me "The Japanese Tradition: Origami."
I was impressed because it seemed to have an absurdist-like sense of humor and wondered if this type of humor is common or "is the Japanese sense of humor."
Later on when the Yakuza series of games returned to the West, among other things, I think I kinda got my answer.
I remember those "The Japanese Tradition" videos. It would be interesting to see you two also react to the ocha and apologising ones.

I love how Japanese culture is equal parts strict tradition and also self-aware humor at that strict tradition
16:16 we have a similar tradition in the US at places like applebees or similar forms of restaurants. You tell the staff you cannot handle being there any longer by putting a barstool through the front window, typically after drinking $90 worth of long island iced teas. Its a little different but the same idea, differing cultures sure are neat.
Ah, the beauty of destroying Applebees windows.
After that, you go to Denny's or a Waffle House and fight staff in the parking lot.

If you can find a staff do not turn their backs on you when you looked at them before raise your hand. The worse case took me one hour just to get the bill and paid for it.

I'm Autistic and struggle with satire and jokes that sound authentic, if I had watched the first video first I'd have accepted everything in it at face value so this was great for me as y'all explained which was a joke and what the actual rules are.

Is there a level of "that's just ridiculous" that wouldn't confuse you of its true nature as comedy? What's your preferred type of comedy you laugh at?
Funnily enough I'm autistic and while I sometimes struggle with jokes irl (like one of my housemates moving out after only a couple weeks and saying "Oh I couldn't stand you because you smell") making ettiquette faux pas in any culture became a source of anxiety so cultural ettiquette became a Special Interest (which has now expanded to a love of cultural anthropology via the simple question "why is this polite") so at least I could be in on that joke!

My late father used to say that Inari sushi used to be called "battleship" because it looked a little like a battleship. This was about 35+ years ago he told me. Perhaps that's why they had a battleship on a sushi....

I think the salt thing is prehistoric honestly. Like that's one of the earliest ways we discovered of purifying and preserving things. It makes sense that early humans would apply the same logic to the spiritual world as the tangible. I think almost every culture has some superstition involving salt warding off evil.
For incredible as it seems, all that stuff with salt being something that can purify things is kind of a common sense in Brasil, and it's easy to hear someone that had a bad day saying that need to take a bath with salt, to clean the body and soul, and some people actually take those baths for real. Probably it's not a coincidence.
If you put salt out to ward off bad luck, people can see it an know that you pay attention to details, so the restaurant that has salt out front seems higher class to passers-by compared to those that don't?
Salt actually is a natural antibiotic and so no wonder peeps would consider it a "cleansing" agent. I think all cultures use it in some way or another to eliminate "evil" supernatural things. In the European concept, the salt is supposed to be poured as an unbroken circle around wherever one either wants to trap a spirit OR keep a spirit OUT. Technically, if you pour salt around your house, many insects including ants and slugs will not want to cross it (causes them to dry out) and thus you keep a bug free house. So in reality, salt does help as a barrier, but just keeping it in a bowl outside the door wouldn't do anything practical.

I remember showing this video to two Japanese friends of mine. I remember the looks of horror as they thought this was actually an educational video people would take seriously, and watching those looks turn to laughter as they caught on to the joke.
I remember watching some of those and thinking "They can NOT be serious." At least now I know I was right....

I was learning Japanese at a language school, and my classmate was obsessed with Namikibashi videos. He played them to our class, and our sensei was both amused and appalled!
The salt thing, it's like a prove that your business is booming and that is why you can leave free salt at entering or just throughout it away (successfully sumo fighter).

Ah, salt is also considered by some to be able to absorb 'bad energy' so it is possible that it is there to prevent.

The salt part was so interesting to me because where I live (northeast of Brazil) we actually have a tradition of throwing salt over your shoulder to ward off bad luck so that's an awesome coincidence

Forgive me for not being sure of this, is Brazil a religious country? If so, is one of the main religions related to any branch of Christianity? If so, there is a saying in my country that you throw salt over your shoulder (depends who you ask as to which shoulder is 'correct') to temporarily blind the devil.
@@phoenixmoon5580 well, not really, but brazil is mostly catholic and evangelic, but theres also candomblé, a Brazilian religion wich is the mix of african religions and catcholism, wich was used as a resistance agianst slavery, and former eastern religions.

Making learning fun Is something that a lot of schools tend to not do.

This was a lot of fun! I enjoyed learning about the actual traditions along with the comedy!
I have one rule for polite sushi eating and that is: memorize the phrase “I’m very sorry; I am allergic to fish and cannot join you”.
(And I know there’s non seafood sushi. I’ve tried it. It didn’t end well.)
It would have been made with the same tools as the fish sushi. It can still be dangerous and people forget that when they try to convince someone to get food from a place that is dangerous for them. Restaurants can make mistakes too. It's better to just make vegan sushi at home.
@@fjolliff6308 yeah absolutely. i know some restaurants that will actually make special dishes for people with allergies and the kitchen will go through this whole cleanse, so if you say you're allergic to something when you actually don't like it then prepare to get banned haha. i don't think a sushi restaurant can accommodate this kind of thing unless they served premade, packaged stuff though (which would be a disservice to the customer).
Please tell me that no-one tried to make you eat yellow pickle sushi. I love most sushi, but that is well down on the list of worst things I've eaten.

OMG I watched this video in my Elementary Japanese class--this and the apologizing one, which I found really funny! Our teacher had to disclaim that it was a joke before she started it, but it's pretty obvious if you're familiar with the conduct and order to things.
I used to watch that how to eat sushi video years ago when it first came out and I was still living in America. I knew it was a joke but I could never forget the advice I got from it. I loved this reaction video!
I remember watching this back when I fist started eating sushi. It took me a few minutes to realize it was a joke. Now it’s one of my favorite videos on UA-cam. I hope you guys react to the rest of them. I feel there’s a part missing though as I remember it talking about the chef being scary with a mysterious past or something.

I've been studying Japanese for over 10 years, it's currently my major in college, I lived there for 4 months, and I worked for a Japanese company. I always dip my sushi in soy sauce. But plz don't tattle on me, they might deny my visa if they find out 😬
Was laughing with y’all the whole time. Suddenly I’d see it as y’all were seeing it like “What was that???” Like how when they all folded their hands quickly in unison! The over the top acting in these videos are always hilarious. In highschool I took Spanish and the videos were a lot like these just about another culture.
What was even more special to me was when I saw y’all reacting. To the things I wasn’t noticing or didn’t think of! Like “Wow! These are things that make them laugh!” Frankly I woulda just found a video on the complexities of sushi boring but y’all made it interesting. Your laughter was infectious

It was interesting to know that salt has come a long way in different cultures not only as an ingredient or preservative, but also for purification. Like so far as religious or spiritual tradition goes, I have seen salt used to ward off evil spirits or bad luck in Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), Shintoism, or Buddhism. Very informative and funny reaction video, Shogo. Thank you!

Japan has such a rich and fascinating culture. Its the one country I've not been to that i need to go to.
What I find fascinating is French cuisine is complex whereas Japanese is simple; delicate. Its such a joy to eat and I love engaging with the Japanese chefs to learn more and make the experience better for us all.
Also, an ice cold Asahi is to die for. Great beer.
Sipping from a finger-bowl ("lemon flavoured") - mistaking it to be an initial 'soup course' was my - and my sis's faux pas introduction to the do's and don'ts of Japanese table etiquette .. much to the amusement of the kitchen staff!

This was so much fun. Honestly if you weren't explaining everything I would have believed a lot of it. I wonder why they didn't mention wasabi. Isn't that usually served with sushi? hmmm It's 11:00PM and now I'm craving sushi.
It's common in sushi-ya in America, but it might not be as common in Japan, where I imagine it's presumed that if there's to be wasabi with a particular piece of sushi, the sushi chef already put the proper amount in it.

I have seen all the different versions of this, from the one you reacted to and the English dubbed in male and female voices. They are all hilarious. There is a male English dubbed that added a bit of adult language at the beginning that is no longer online or is very hard to find.
I saw the original video years ago, it's hilarious seeing it again and having details explained.
