I totally agree with you about Normal People! I felt quite ambivalent toward the characters and story in both book and TV! I think I was the only person in my friends group who had no real emotional response to it hahh so you're not alone!
I feel exactly the same way - ambivalent is actually the perfect way to describe it! It's not like I thought it was a bad book, I thought the writing and themes etc were poignant and interesting - I just didn't really care about the characters or story and that's not for lack of trying! So many of my friends ADORED it too which I'm happy about - one of my mates was really disappointed I didn't like it and I was like I get it haha, it's weird when you love something and someone else doesn't see what you see. Thanks for sharing haha! x

Towards the beginning of lockdown I read Silver Sparrow (also by Tayari Jones) and it was just as beautiful as An American Marriage, I took photos of whole pages, the writing was that evocative. Ah yay :) I feel you, sometimes when life gets busier you just don't get the time to read do you - or I'm so tired in the evenings that I just need to stick something pretty mindless on the tv and then nod off, I'm too sleepy to read haha! Lovely video Meg! Honestly I love to read but sometimes I can’t motivate myself to pick up a book so it takes sooo much longer for me to finish a book 😂 any tips?? Ooh I’ve read little women! I loved it but I found it extremely sad that Beth died 🥺 I actually saw the movie in the cinema with everyone in my family back in December but I knew everything that was going to happen which was kind of funny 😂 ahh I’ve heard of all the bright places I really need to read it! Right now, I’m reading The Kite Runner which even though I haven’t read many pages it’s quite sad! Have you read it? Great video Meg!! 💗

I knew it was going to happen too as Rachel and Joey talk about it in Friends haha 🙈 yes I've read The Kite Runner, such an incredible book! I think I already mentioned on Instagram but A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author is one of my all-time favourites x

I loved both Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones, but I have to say that Daisy Jones is a tad more special to me. The audiobook is brilliant! Keep the book videos coming, even though they will add a lot of books to my TBR list. Hope you're feeling better! x

Ahhh so sorry about the migraine, I actually had one last night/early hours of this morning and it was so tough, it's lingering now - was saying to my boyfriend that my whole face is still hurting! Just finished watching the full video. I added a few to my 'want to read' list, so thanks Meg! I noticed there were quite a few from Reese's book club😁 Did you know Daisy Jones is being made into a TV series with Riley Keough and Sam Claflin?
Aww really glad to hear that, thanks lovely - hope you enjoy the recommendations :) I don't follow Reese's book club as I don't like knowing too much about books before I read them and when I've browsed before I've left feeling like I know the whole plot if that makes sense - she has such great taste though and I feel like she's so (understandably) popular that her recs trickle down haha, we all end up reading Little Fires Everywhere etc :) love that she chooses stories with strong female leads! Oh my gosh I didn't until I edited this video yesterday and had to google the book to get a photo of the cover to insert, it popped up and I was so happy - that'll be great! x

I’ve read normal people - I watched the tv show first then read the book but I partly agree, Marianne is a very odd character to connect to! I liked the therapy scene with Connell and male portrayals of mental health. I also read where the crawdads sing - I found the first half quite slow but really enjoyed the end and how Kya always stood up for her self! x
I loved this video. I always enjoy hearing your opinions on books that are well known, because you aren’t afraid to share an unpopular opinion 😄 I also loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo! And Daisy Jones and the Six.

My favourite new reads of the summer we’re both by Lucy Foely, they were called The Guest List and The Hunting Party. If you like thrillers that keep you guessing I would highly recommend them! 📚❤️

I ordered a bunch of books on this list way back in May on your recommendation and I’ve loved every one. But something happened with my order of Such a Fun Age and I still haven’t received it!!! I’m looking into what happened now because I was so looking forward to it so hopefully I’ll get to read it soon!

It might just be the year we've had but I started reading Where the Crawdads Sing and the main character's unfortunate life circumstances (at least in the beginning of the book) really got me down, I'll have to give it another chance later!
Also, I've read Jodi Picoult books since I was little and I love that she has changed/affected the way I look at the world. I always say, if more people read books, we would have so much more empathy for each other.
Ah I'm so sorry to hear that, I can understand! My boyfriend Will is reading it right now and he was actually saying this afternoon 'poor Kya' as she has such a tough start in life. I would 100% recommend finishing it as her story is so beautiful, but obviously you know best whether it's the right book for you or not at a later time ❤️ Picoult is incredible isn't she, I always find her characters so realistic and her stories seem to always have a moral dilemma which is always very thought-provoking! x
I loved this video! and I agree with you on Normal People. I am currently getting through it and im fairly dissapointed. My girlfriend told me someone had rated it like ¨the Jane Austen¨ novel from our time and I do not agree whatsoever!. I will watch the show anyways to see what the fuss is about. Also, the silent patient was really good for an easy to read thriller, i liked it a lot too!.
Just wondering if you are supposed to wear your glasses all the time, how are you able to see when you are not wearing them?
Hiya lovely! Because my eyesight really isn’t that bad at all - it’s recommended that I wear them every day (except for close-up stuff like being on a computer etc) but I can easily get by without them if that makes sense :) x
OMG I gave this video of yours a miss in 2020 as I wasn't a big reader. In 2021 thats been one of my resolutions and I've discovered my love of it again so came back to watch this. I felt so alone in disliking Normal People haha!

Same here! How cute was The Flatshare, I thought it was such a fun idea 💗 hmm me neither, I thought the show was seriously beautifully filmed but I had the same 'meh' feelings about the plot and characters etc which is a shame! x

You know, I didn’t like Little Women either. I think you need to REALLY relate to Jo to enjoy it. Have you read Night Circus? It’s just really pretty writing and the author recently cane out with a new one, Starless Sea.
Since you loved Crawdads, I think you might like Amy Greene’s books. Bloodroot is flat out great, and Long Man is about a little pocket of American history (the New Deal) that isn’t often talked about. They’re both steeped in that folksy kind of Americana.
I feel like if I'd grown up with it then it would have a really special place in my heart, but reading it for the first time as an adult made it feel so slow, at least for me anyway. It's funny as I thought some parts of it were so poignant and I was like 'ah, THIS is why it's a classic!' and then I wouldn't pick it up for another week as I fell out of love with it again. Have you seen the new movie? I watched that and really loved it, partly because of the cast and their performances! I can see why it's such a beloved story but yeah, super slow haha!

Anyone know if there's a way to search for a book based on the plot? I read a book when I was younger that I remember loving but cannot for the life of me remember the title. I've tried to search based on bits and pieces I remember from the plot but can never find it and would love to read it again!

Oh god, I felt the same with Normal People ahahah and I was sooo frustrated because apparently is the book/TV series of the year 🤣 very much preferred One Day, it has the same sort of "growing up" story but at least it made me empathyze with the characters 💛
I'm kinda not glad I'm not the only one as obv you want everyone to enjoy things (especially a book that someone has put their heart and soul into, hate giving negative reviews!) but also glad I'm not the only one who felt this way about it 😂 I just don't get what everyone sees in it, I'm baffled?! AGREED - One Day is one of my all-time favourite books. We sound very similar hahaha 💛

I haven't read Normal People, but I watched the first couple of episodes of the tv series cause everyone was so obsessed with it and I had exactly the same feelings you had with the book 😆
Also thought Daisy Jones was incredibly over hyped 😕😕 I just felt like it was very boring and predictable and full of stereotypes
Ah really, I have to say I agree! It's a shame as I was fully ready to fall in love with it and then I just found it pretty... boring 🙈 I'd be reading it and have to re-read the same page about four times as my mind would just wander, I think it's because I didn't feel a connection with the characters so I wasn't very invested in the story! I did enjoy Daisy Jones & the Six however I didn't think it was AS good as I'd heard - such a unique way of storytelling though, I definitely think it's worth a read for sure! Ah I'm not a DNF-er at all, I think I dislike the feeling of 'giving up on' or not finishing a book more than reading a book I think's a bit crap haha! Maybe one day I'll be able to do it but I'm such a quick reader anyway that it's probably better that I just power through :) don't worry, I do! If you watch until the end that's what I say :) x
@@MegSays Watching til the end was what made me worry as you said you didn't really feel up to filming but did anyway. And I used to be the same, but then I realised I don't have the time or energy to waste on meh books when there are billions more I could be reading. I've accepted I can't read everything in the world, but doesn't mean I can't try, lol.

I feel like we're definitely in the minority, which I'm happy about as obviously you want people to enjoy books - but yeah, I felt the same as you, very much 'what am I missing?' as I just didn't get the hype! x
