Total genius and musically pleasing. David Thompson on vocals and Peter Laughter on guitar was the best Pere Ubu sound. Taken from two Heathen singles on the "Data Panic in The Year Zero EP and a part 2 45rpm release. From a industrial city (Ohio?) one can hear the hard edged metallic sound. Great band and this sound carried over to their first album "The Modern Dance".

Anton Haq Peter Laughner played guitar on the first two Pere Ubu singles. So you can hear him on "Darkness,""30 Sec," "Final Solution" & "Cloud 149." Of course, he's also on all the Rocket From The Tombs recordings as well.

It's weird how different bands kind of work a similar sound without ripping each other off. Joy Division were around the same time and there's definitely a common sound to both bands. This is a genius compilation collecting these excellent tracks, by the first album the sound had moved on.

The band we know as Joy Division formed in mid '77. Pere Ubu's first record "30 Seconds.../Heart Of Darkness was released at the end of 1975. That doesn't mean they ripped it off, but it's perhaps more likely than not the influence came that way. :-)

ShanghaiRooster I'm sure there's something to what you say, I recently remembered that when I first heard Joy Division I thought, 'they've got that Ubu bass sound'. I think it's possible to be influenced by something without realising and I'm also sure that different people can come up with a similar sound totally independently.

Have you ever heard of "mutual discovery"? It's when two or more people develop the same kind of ideas or concepts at the same time, but completely independent of each other. It can happen in literature, films, music, etc. In this case, I would put forth the suggestion that both Pere Ubu and Joy Division had heard the German band Can and were both influenced by them. Remember that Joy Division were in Manchester, England. Pere Ubu were in Cleveland, Ohio, and prior 1978 had only released four singles on their own label.

Both came from working class industrial cities that were facing economic decline and who's weather is generally dour, cloudy and cold. No doubt they were both inspired by the rows of abandoned tenements and plants and rotting homes when they were making their music.

@@billlloyd4029 He didn't just leave the band, he left the planet... I'm pretty sure he somehow managed to drink himself to a cirrhotic death by the age of 24. He did some 'solo' work but it sucks... Only time he actually was in a recording studio was with Pere Ubu. While I no longer drink, I can imagine 1970's Cleveland (or any mid-western city for that matter) being a perfect place to enter late-stage alcoholism by early 20s.
