As a 15yr old in 1978 I remember sitting with Peter Shelley upstairs at the 'Factory' in Hulme, Manchester, watching Pere Ubu on stage while Peter explained the concepts behind Alfred Jarry's 'Pataphysics' to me and expounded upon 'Ubu Roi'...ah gilded days of youth!
we need to write The True Story of punk and what it meant [so so much] what it did [so so much] how real it was [so so real] and the art behind it all as well as the actual real revolution and destruction it evoked and created. when punk came along i was married, loading lorries full time as my dayjob and perilously close to having kids and locking down into this narrow reality. punk was that 'nuclear reaction' that wiped all of that out. and all these years later i am still creating, still not working, and sitting on the outside looking in with the same old scowl on my face whilst i make my art.

This is just one of those songs. It's so good, I find it difficult to believe that it even came into existence. Played at top volume at the right kind of gathering, this song is going to blow minds and maybe change some lives.
Sad to say, when Pere Ubu first hit my teenage ears back in the late 70s, I wasn't much of a fan. I would like to go back in time and kick my younger self's ass.
Produced by the late Tim (Mister) Wright who also played bass and most of the guitar tracks on this marvelous record. When John Peel heard FINAL SOLUTION (on the max's kansas city '76 compilation LP) he played it on the BBC, thereby creating a demand for a Pere Ubu tour in the UK. RIP
John Peel was a one in a billion talent. An ear for the inner soul of the music. He is missed. Check out the Yazoo session from 1982 (ua-cam.com/video/n0i4TSISJJQ/v-deo.html) going between genres was natural for him.

1978 and still avant garde!! As a DJ in that time I open my house with this song!
They were a big influence on the Bunnymen's guitarist, Will Sargeant. If I hadn't just read his memoir, Bunnymen", I'd never have known what an impression they made on the would-be post-punks when they played Eric's in Liverpool in 1976 (as did DEVO, Cramps, Pretenders. etc. from OH, who sowed musical seeds in the UK back then). Excited to delve into Pere Ubu now.
I remember Cleveland back then. Standing with my friends after just rocking my ass off 4 am. Thought about walking across the lift bridge, but then it went clunk. . . Uhoh. Cuyahoga river mouth at 4am. . .
Allen Ravenstine briefly left Pere Ubu between November 1975-May 1976 (as he did not want to tour) and was not part of the 'Final Solution' or 'Cloud 149' sessions, which included Dave Taylor on EML ElectroComp synthesizer and Ace-Tone organ. Yet, in an interview, Allen Ravenstine apparently heard a live performance, rough mix or demo of 'Final Solution' and suggested that the sound after the lyric 'guitar's gonna sound like a nuclear destruction' at 2m26s should be a vacuum, instead of the explosive sound Dave Taylor planned to use. Allen Ravenstine noted he saw all of the Pere Ubu shows including Dave Taylor and figured he could do that (despite not enjoying live performance), but did not want to miss out on future Pere Ubu involvement and said he wanted to try again in June 1976 (much to Dave Taylor's misfortune). He left Pere Ubu after the 1989 album "Cloudland" and pursued his interests as a flight instructor and an airline pilot for Northwest Airlines. Allen Ravenstine later contributed to the Robert Fantinatto's 2014 documentary "I Dream of Wires: The Modular Synthesizer Documentary", which led to two albums in 2013 with Pere Ubu synthesizer technician Robert Wheeler: "City Desk" & "Farm Report", plus solo albums "The Pharoah's Bee" (2015), "Waiting For The Bomb" (2018), "Crossing Daylight" (2022) and "Terminal Drive" (2017) with Cinderella Backstreet bassist Albert Dennis, which was from 1975 and led to Allen Ravenstine being asked to join Pere Ubu.

I was looking weird music like Beefheart, came up with Ubu. Sadly did not give it enough time or something. Would have loved this band then, still like it today thou.
You might care to give Swedish band Bob Hund's cover version 'Ett fall och en lösning' ('A case and a solution') a chance. You can also find several live versions. Still, not as inspired as Pere Ubu's 1976 single.
He did a live version with Trent Reznor and Tunde Adebimpe (lead singer of TV on the Radio). I was hoping Trent Reznor would have added vintage synthesizer. A more faithful performance is the cover by Swedish band Bob Hund 'Ett fall och en lösning' ('A case and a solution'). They also have several live versions. Very good, but still not as good as Pere Ubu's 1976 single.

Very well produced, too. Instruments and vocals sound right like you're there, and very stereophonic, too.

Went to art school in clevo during these years, what a treat these guys were. Love you all peer Ube, especially tony!!
awesome! I gotta know, what was Ubu Dance Party like live? That one really sucked me in.
Absolutely brilliant song.
Beautiful vocal harmonies played against David Thomas screaming
"SOLUTION!!!" Perfect.
Everything about this song is perfect. The guitar solo at the end makes it my favorite song ever
It’s not often I discover such awesome music. Consider me pere ubu’s newest fan
The groove in this song really reminds me of NEU!
krautrock konnection!
I first heard this in late 1970-s. Loved it ever since. Goes for the Terminal Tower album
The voice of disconnected youth everywhere.

Let us now praise synthesizer genius Allen Ravenstine, who has no equal in rock music, not even close
He's not on this song, though, is he?

I sent Steve Effinger the 45 of this when it came out and he has a version of it on YT. Wow was I hated in college for playing this. HAAAATRED!!

Yes remember seeing them both at the Kilburn National in London around then. Both were absolutely brilliant!
Pere Ubu completely slayed Pixies in Lawrence, KS on that tour.
Superb stuff but I love Rocket From The Tombs version as much.
