Agreed. I played it at the Galloping Ghost Arcade, and probably would have become a fan of the anime as a result if I wasn't already a fan before I played that.
I remember DJ boy... my dad use to give me $5 allowance every week and he got mad and stopped cuz he found out I walked to the liquor store where they had DJ boy and spent all $5. $5 was a lot back then.
Congrats. Not only do you make the title less click baity by including the word "probably," but this is the first list of this sort that I've seen when I actually haven't heard of any of the games haha. Well, I may have played Blade Master before, but I can't remember. Either way good stuff, and fighters need to keep a better eye on their girlfriends
Euro Douche The only one i've heard of and played was the first one. "Growl", and I played that on Sega Genesis. I've never seen or heard of any of the rest on this list.
Growl was a fantastic game. It's still one of my favorites. I remember there was also a beat-em-up where you fought killer clowns, but I don't remember what it was called.
Man we share a love of fighting games. I thought that I have played it all! You pay attention to the stories as well. Very impressive! Also the game with Paul and Bobby... I love how Bobby does a windmill into headspins as his special moves! As a bboy I definitely have always dreamed of doing that to take out criminals!
Huh. I heard of and recognized and even played some of these. But there were a good selection of ones I’d never heard of. Thanks for expanding my beat em up knowledge!
Noticed a trend of the characters being drastically underweight compared to their height and muscular appearance. One dude said like 6'3 150 pounds while also looking like a bodybuilder. At that height and weight he'd be pretty skinny or lanky.
It must have sucked to be a Karate man's girlfriend in the 80s and 90s. I never realized how in demand they were with local street gangs Good list tho, vigilante is the only one I remember
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this one yet, but how about "Hot Blooded Family". A beat-em up for PSX game that never got a U.S release. Also, im still waiting for Capcom to release Alien Vs Predator arcade beat em-up for home systems.....at least make it an arcade classic for the PSN or XBOX live lol
Growl has one of the most ridiculous weird endings in arcade game history where the final boss turns out to be a giant alien flea monster that was controlling the poachers.
Does anyone ever heard of Night Slashers - Horror theme (specifically classic horror movies) Spider-Man: The Video Game - it has X-Men arcade vibe to it Metamorphic Force - Konami version of Altered Beast
Out out of all these mentioned,Streets of Rage should be a well known beat em up honestly. I got a few other good beat em ups you could mentioned that i played as a child back in the early to mid 90's. Sonic Blastman and 2, Ninja Warriors (made by Taito) Brawl Brothers, and Rival Turf (made by Jaleco)
Holy shit, rival turf! I forgot all about that one and when I read the name I remembered the character that looked a little bit like a cross between edi.e from final fight and m.bison from street fighter, great game. Thanks for reminding me of it!
i think your missing the whole concept of the video, its meant to be rare, obscure beat em ups, all the ones you have mentioned many people have played. the snes was a popular home console, so those games aren't rare at all
Sizz XRK I'll never forget that box art for that game though when I rented it from blockbuster video back then, it had 2 teenagers on the front cover 😂
DJ boy looks like an arcade game I can't find instead of roller skates you used a skateboard the name of the game has eluded me . btw awesome review the only one I knew was growl Wich I know as tinsel but both versions have different ending bosses
In all honesty and jokes aside, the Tick is worse than Bebe's Kids. If you watch any playthrough, it takes roughly 3 hours to complete and the ending is the same as the game over screen. At least Bebe's Kids I can laugh at their stage designs and horrible in game mechanics. Personal favourite beat'em up is arcade Battletoads.
A beat'em up fan who lived through the arcade era - not only would've heard about these oddballs, but have seen them in action in the arcades. Would've played maybe once - or watched some other fool do that - and then left these to their fate, which was nothing but fading into obscurity and forgetfulness. And the latter was so for a good reason. Reaffirming the arcade goers back to Cody, Guy and Haggar...or Hawk, Blood, Boomer & Sledge.
Games I've played/heard of from this video: 1. Streets of Rage ( Fave) 2. Final Fight (Fave) 3. Growl 4. Ghost Chasers (Part One & Two) 5. Undercover Cops 6. DJ Boy( Never played it but I read years ago it inspired the creation of Skate from Streets of Rage 2) I would most certainly try out Riot City, Really is just another Final Fight.
Does anyone know the name of the beat em up.... The cut scene you are on a roof fighting, a helicopter arrives which the person fighting is named Unkilled and you can pick 4 characters, 3 males and 1 female which one is named Leonarzo or something weird like that who wears black pants with a flame symbol; the main character and the character that everyone uses is Unkilled who kinda looks like a Ghoul because of the colors: one of the boss's is a Spider Doctor: I played the game at Fun Valley at a camping resort in the game room they have; this was back in early 2007 I wanna say.... You can pick up stuff off the floor, I think it's a 2 player game and not 4 since I've only played with one other person.... If someone knows the game I'm talking about that would be such a blessing since I've been trying to figure out the game since then.... Also, it's not Tekken, Street Fighter or Streets Of Rage since I've already seen the trailers and gameplay for them and I would have recognized it.
B Rap Boys, the sequal to DJ Boy got dope Hip Hop music & funny azz Fat Boys beat boxes lolz. Night Slashers is probably another one that most peaple never heard of. I think Castlevania beat em up when I think of that game haha.
More people will know about Knuckle Bash soon enough, as M2 is porting all of Toaplan’s arcade titles to modern consoles except two, those being Enma Daio and Mahjong Sisters. Those are no big loss if you ask me. All the games that count and part of M2’s lineup.
Wolfman Jack is a VERY odd choice for a celebrity voiceover for D.J. Boy. While one of the most famous disk jockeys in america he was a ROCK DJ and almost never played hip hop.
I got some of these on the snes but are reproduction because their were only released in Japan.... I love beat-em ups and fighting games:) I got most of the fighting and beat -em ups for the snes (US,Japan, and European versions)......
I only knew four of these games, so I learned something. It's all fun and games until an Elvis impersonator shows up to kick some @ss! The narrator's deadpan voice and sarcasm had me dyin'! Great video! 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Well, actually i knew the most part of them. Played on these platforms: Growl / Runark (Arcade / Megadrive) Vigilante (Arcade / PC-Engine) Karate Blazers (Arcade) Ghost Chaser Densei (SNES) (Not the same game?) (Never heard about the arcade) Riot City / Riot Zone / Crest of Wolf (PC Engine Duo) (Not played the Arcade version) Undercover Cops (Arcade / SNES) Knuckle Bash (Arcade) DJ Boy (Arcade) I only knew about these ones thanks to MAME. Silent Dragon (MAME) Blade Master (MAME) However, i would recommend these alternative titles. Mostly played on the arcades... Except Crystal of Kings and the two Asuras, i discivered thanks to MAME. Violence Fight / Solitary Fighter Dark Seal Arabian Fight Monster Maulers Kaiser Knuckle Violent Storm Asura Blade Asura Buster Crystal of Kings and... Tattoo Assassins (mwah-hah hah hah) Enjoy.
Vigilante isn't very unkown if you where at the age of playing arcade games back then, the machine was rather common and it was released on a number of home systems and PC's and even advertised in magazines and on TV (at least the TG-16 version was). Not that it was a great game or anything... lol The rest of the list is amazing that I only recognized like 2 other games (DJ Boy was not nearly as common or well known as Vigilante but I have played it on an actual machine.) So your list is 10 out 10 in my book and a fantastic video. For me it would be pretty hard to make a video like this where I don't know all of the games... I was an 80's and 90's arcade maniac and spent thousands of dollars in quarters on so many games... Now with the advent of MAME I never need to miss out on any more games wishing for a home conversion that would be sub par at best... lol Just to make it clear your video is fantastic and I enjoyed every second of it and via MAME I plan on checking out some of those games :)
I will say that I have actually played Riot City before. I have also heard of DJ Boy, but I've never played it. The part you mentioned about him being on Rollerblades, I wonder if this game was out before Streets of Rage 2. Also, that game, too, had the whole plot about rescuing a girl.
Nice games right there buddy!! I'm very into beat em up these days!! Gotta check them out!! Also the last one has the most badass first stage music of all time!! Very intricated and punch stuff! Dixie Dregs and Return To Forever Level!!
Hey thank a bunch for showing DJ Boy, my local Golf N Stuff had that game near the door. I would always look at it and maybe played it once.I thought about it over the decades but never could remember what it was called and no one knew what game I was talking about. As soon as I saw the fat guy with round glasses at 12:20 I knew it was the same game. You solved an old mystery for me.
I have heard of Karate blazers, Undercover cops or whatever it was called, the one with the 'street sweepers' but that was about it. Never saw them back in the day, only learned of them online. I figured Karate Blazers was going to be here, and usually when I see one of these lists it never features the game/movie/whatever I am thinking is going to be there, but this one actually did.
while I've heard of most of these, I'm pretty sure a good chunk of them I've never seen in the arcade! love the knuckle bash intro where you have to be the john moshita of reading just to catch it all, haha. will have to check these out in mame soon!
Riot City looks like the little Rushing Beat Asura/Brawl Brothers/Rival Turf that couldnt. and Silent Dragon looks like a Great Value Night Slashers mixed with even more Rushing Beat.
Karate Blazers! All I could remember about this game was that it had a blond dude who could do a flaming cartwheel. I can't even remember if I actually liked the game or not, but the fact that I couldn't remember it's name has been bothering me for over 20 years.
How come everyone seems to think that every beat-em up game is 2D? C'mon, what about God Hand, No More Heroes, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and The Warriors?
I remember Growl. But it was a different version. On PC, I think. I think you had a revolver and it was probably 1 player only. I remember Ghost Chasers because of the girl with the tail.
In case you want to skip the ones you already know about:
0:00 Growl (Arcade, Genesis)
2:09 Vigilante (Arcade, Amiga, Genesis),
3:29 Karate Blazers (Arcade, ?)
4:46 Ghost Chaser Densei (Arcade, SNES)
6:04 Riot City (Arcade)
7:31 Silent Dragon (Arcade, ?)
8:54 Undercover Cops (Arcade, SNES)
10:35 Knuckle Bash (Arcade, ?)
12:06 DJ Boy (Arcade, ?)
12:24 Blade Master (Arcade, ?)
Thanks man. Much appreciated
disappointed there was no violent storm
Vigilante was also on TG16.
ty
13:25 BLADE MASTER
Don't laugh. Try the Sailor Moon beat-em up! It is dope!
Agreed. I played it at the Galloping Ghost Arcade, and probably would have become a fan of the anime as a result if I wasn't already a fan before I played that.
On snes hell yeah👍
Which one?
Yep, its fucking amazing!
I played one on SNES and it was boring for me.
I remember DJ boy... my dad use to give me $5 allowance every week and he got mad and stopped cuz he found out I walked to the liquor store where they had DJ boy and spent all $5. $5 was a lot back then.
B.Rap Boys was the sequel and should've been on the list.
13:55 (Girlfriend kidnapped) Oh come on, not you too! We get the picture...
LOL
Haven't heard of any of these.... deep cuts. But then again, my knowledge of Arcade fighters is limited. Most of them looked pretty fun.
Euro Douche The only one i've heard of and played was the first one. "Growl", and I played that on Sega Genesis. I've never seen or heard of any of the rest on this list.
2:54 I mst definitely remember this game because we used to mimic the “Hey come on” back in the day
I played Vigilante when I was kid. I've finished it on the Master System version.
Violent storm was brutally awesome!
Love violent storm
Growl was a fantastic game. It's still one of my favorites. I remember there was also a beat-em-up where you fought killer clowns, but I don't remember what it was called.
I swear there was a home port of Growl on the Sega Genesis.
Darren West there is one
And DJ Boy too.
It's showed in the video
Darren West was it "Runark" ?
And was a arcade perfect port on tatio legends vol 2 on X box and PS2
Man we share a love of fighting games. I thought that I have played it all! You pay attention to the stories as well. Very impressive! Also the game with Paul and Bobby... I love how Bobby does a windmill into headspins as his special moves! As a bboy I definitely have always dreamed of doing that to take out criminals!
Huh. I heard of and recognized and even played some of these. But there were a good selection of ones I’d never heard of. Thanks for expanding my beat em up knowledge!
i play them all when i was kid back in the 90s
night slashers is the game I always wanted to play. but never did.
play night slashers x. one of the best beat em ups of all time
That end boss of Growl is freaky.
Noticed a trend of the characters being drastically underweight compared to their height and muscular appearance. One dude said like 6'3 150 pounds while also looking like a bodybuilder. At that height and weight he'd be pretty skinny or lanky.
Knew about all of these... played them all too...
Guess I'm an old nerd 😑
I'm impressed
not more of a nerd than me...i have beaten them all
It must have sucked to be a Karate man's girlfriend in the 80s and 90s. I never realized how in demand they were with local street gangs
Good list tho, vigilante is the only one I remember
True. Personally I love those girlfriend characters because they stick with their partners despite the dangers it brings.
I remember the beat em up with roller blade!
Backup Dancers Vs. Toad Ninjas.
Those main characters in ghost chasers have giraffe legs!
Rise to honor was a gem. Featuring jet li
I just didnt like using the analog to fight
I had Vigilante on the Turbo Grafx 16 lol
Two Crude Dudes is a beat 'em gem, and I swear I never hear anyone ever talk about it
great music too
Called Crude Buster in the Arcades
yea i never heard of it until recently. It's a sequel to Bad Dudes on nes. If you like two crude dudes you might like bad dudes
To be fair it's more of an action platformer rather than a beat 'em up. It is a great game though.
Pump it up!
A very underrated beat'em up is phantom breakers battleground that game is incredible
The way he says "girlfriend kidnapped " 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So many girlfriends where kidnapped back in the day.
Never heard about nine, but cmom! Vigilante is a classic, at least here in Brazil.
master system
Silent Dragon! Have seen it in the arcade, but never tried it
I played DJBoy when I was 5... I've forgotten the name since... Thank you!
Nobody ever talks about Samurai brothers from neo geo.
Growl has one of the most ridiculous weird endings in arcade game history where the final boss turns out to be a giant alien flea monster that was controlling the poachers.
Does anyone ever heard of
Night Slashers - Horror theme (specifically classic horror movies)
Spider-Man: The Video Game - it has X-Men arcade vibe to it
Metamorphic Force - Konami version of Altered Beast
Say you forgot to mention Zero Team👍😍!! Much love for that forgotten game.
Growls intro goes hard LMAO!!!!!
I've only heard of DJ boy for the Sega Genesis.
Me: watching this in 2021 and saying thank God for Streets Of Rage 4 in 2020.
yea heard everyone of these games, but only played 3 of them back in the day...
Another Great video :)
11:16 The costume design of that enemy too funny Hahah!
Wow Growl is like a knock off of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs …. never thought there would be such a thing/
Nothing new to me. But I like your style!
I'll check more of your videos! :)
There is not a single game here I didn’t know about. When I was a kid I played most of them in my local arcade.
I remember dj boy. Had it in a pizza shop in brooklyn.
Vigilante and riot city ( crest of wolf in japan) came out on the PC Engine I have both titles
7:16 Was that a fucking rising tackle. Ripped straight from Terry Bogard with a different hitbox setting.

BestboxerEver Fair enough I'll give you that, but at least somebody got reminded of something I said though so its all good lol
Q-BoiX20 Q-BoiX20 I borrowed it quite a few times off a mate of mine, good memories!
Vigilante is the only one of these games I've heard of, I was unaware of the rest before seeing this video.
Had ghostchasers on the SFC thou.
Amazing man!!! I love beat ups. Really haven't hear any of these.
Only one that worked on mame for the wii was Riot City but I did get the Sega Genesis version of Growl
DJ boy looks like an arcade game I can't find instead of roller skates you used a skateboard the name of the game has eluded me . btw awesome review the only one I knew was growl Wich I know as tinsel but both versions have different ending bosses
Vigilante was on turbo-grafx 16
I hope that nobody ever kidnaps my girlfriend- because I don't know if I have it in me to fight my way through an entire city!
Use to be my favorite genre before I learned about RPGs.
Vigilante was at the arcades.
At 5:45 is that the flame sprite from Street Fighter? Haha
Yo, that Karate Blazers was my shit Back N Tha Dayz
Btw I love your job. You've got my props 🙂
The Tick and Bebe's Kids are the best beat'em ups I have ever played.
You take that back about Bebe's Kidz.
Butthead! ;p
Love the tekken intro u got the song 🎵
Taking Madonna to the junkyard sounds about right
silent dragon is another name for a silent but deadly
Double Dragon Arcade game was the best
growl kicked ass (taito legends 2 ps2)
A beat'em up fan who lived through the arcade era - not only would've heard about these

or watched some other fool do that - and then left these to their fate, which was nothing

Reaffirming the arcade goers back to Cody, Guy and Haggar...or Hawk, Blood, Boomer & Sledge.
I remember Karate Blazers
Games I've played/heard of from this video:
1. Streets of Rage ( Fave)
2. Final Fight (Fave)
3. Growl
4. Ghost Chasers (Part One & Two)
5. Undercover Cops
6. DJ Boy( Never played it but I read years ago it inspired the creation of Skate from Streets of Rage 2)
I would most certainly try out Riot City, Really is just another Final Fight.
Does anyone know the name of the beat em up.... The cut scene you are on a roof fighting, a helicopter arrives which the person fighting is named Unkilled and you can pick 4 characters, 3 males and 1 female which one is named Leonarzo or something weird like that who wears black pants with a flame symbol; the main character and the character that everyone uses is Unkilled who kinda looks like a Ghoul because of the colors: one of the boss's is a Spider Doctor: I played the game at Fun Valley at a camping resort in the game room they have; this was back in early 2007 I wanna say.... what about
NINJA BASEBALL BAT MAN?
Great widely unknown game!
Wolfman Jack is a VERY odd choice for a celebrity voiceover for D.J. Boy. While one of the most famous disk jockeys in america he was a ROCK DJ and almost never played hip hop.
I played the one with the skates lol. I remember that bitch that tries to fart on you 😂😂😂
Seems to me the villains could get away with freaking anything if they would just STOP KIDNAPPING GIRLFRIENDS...
Awesome narration to this video! The perfect blend of dry commentary matched to the ridiculousness on screen :-)
With Emulators , ive heard almost all of these.
I love beat em ups.
One of my many fav genres.
I got some of these on the snes but are reproduction because their were only released in Japan.... I love beat-em ups and fighting games:) I got most of the fighting and beat -em ups for the snes (US,Japan, and European versions)......

*90's Game Devs:* _"You get to rescue the girlfriend again"_
*Publisher:* _"Yes!"_
Well, actually i knew the most part of them.
Played on these platforms:
Growl / Runark (Arcade / Megadrive)
Vigilante (Arcade / PC-Engine)
Karate Blazers (Arcade)
Ghost Chaser Densei (SNES) (Not the same game?) (Never heard about the arcade)
Riot City / Riot Zone / Crest of Wolf (PC Engine Duo) (Not played the Arcade version)
Undercover Cops (Arcade / SNES)
Knuckle Bash (Arcade)
DJ Boy (Arcade)
I only knew about these ones thanks to MAME.
Silent Dragon (MAME)
Blade Master (MAME)
However, i would recommend these alternative titles.
Mostly played on the arcades... Except Crystal of Kings and the two Asuras, i discivered thanks to MAME.
Violence Fight / Solitary Fighter
Dark Seal
Arabian Fight
Monster Maulers
Kaiser Knuckle
Violent Storm
Asura Blade
Asura Buster
Crystal of Kings
and...
Tattoo Assassins (mwah-hah hah hah)
Enjoy.
The main reason why would anyone probably never heard of those games is - THEY'RE SHITTY. And Denjin Makai was too hard.
sounds like micheal jackson
Hillarious. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Knuckle Bush is nice

Gonna give a shoutout to Fight'n Rage on Steam. really impressed, and the SF moves/3rd Strike parries are a nice touch.
