They were still a year away yet but this was where you could first see the signs of what was to come for the Bucs under Dungy. Went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the NFL that season in one of the toughest places in the league to play.
It was this game and the use of Terrell Davis as a hammer on that game winning drive that I knew Denver had found the answer for Elway at running back. Couple that with one of the greatest O-line coaches of all time in Alex Gibbs, along with his linemen of Zimmerman, Schlereth, Nalen, Habib, and Broderick Thompson and the genus of what would eventually yield back-to-back SB's and a 2,000+ rushing season was born. To hammer that ball down the field on that type of defense in Tampa Bay at that time was phenomenal to say the least.
This game is wild because it serves as a precursor to both teams' future success. While the Broncos are on the brink of winning back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998, and the Buccaneers will secure their own championship in 2002, this matchup showcases the early stages of their development as competitive forces in the NFL, laying the groundwork for their eventual Lombardi Trophies in the near future.
The last game of that season, Jerry Ellison scored a TD and handed me the ball. My brother saw me on his TV and damn near fell off the couch. I wish I could find that game and show it to my grandchildren. It was blacked out in Tampa and I didn't record the news that night. I took the football back the next season and he signed it for me. It's the last TD ball from the Hugh Culverhouse era. I still have it. Cheers.
Elway, TD, Sharpe, Zimmerman vs Sapp, Lynch, and Brooks (all HOFers + Atwater on the Broncos D)...also Coach Dungy in the HOF and Coach Shanahan SHOULD be in there (one of the biggest omissions in Canton)
How could you expect grown men to play football in those old Tampa Bay uniforms? Also big thanks for this. Picture quality is fantastic. You must have had extremely nice setup for the time!
Winless vs. Undefeated. Wow, way to sell it Verne. Also, it's week 3. It's not that big of a deal to be undefeated or winless after 2 games. He buried the game before it even started.
I don't think anybody really said anything on this, but I saw an implied threat in the uniform change. With the D [helmet] gone they were ready to go to any wobegon city and not just places such as Dayton, Delaware, Douglas, Dakota [Carolina has a team-why not Dakota?] or why not Dolbeau-Mistassini, Quebec, Canada?

Remarkable quality. What a gift.
Saw this game at Mile High with my dad.
Both teams final year in those uniforms
Probably good decision for the Bucs but one of the worst decisions for Denver…
It’s crazy how bad dilfer is and he be so critical of other QBs

Both teams final year in these classic orange uniforms. They would both get new uniforms the following season in 1997.

I remember watching this game when 2 pac died 2 days prior.
I remember that. Was in P.E. class when we got the news. Danced a jig I was so excited.

Just imagine if WCW didn't fold up and TNT kept the nfl along with Inside the NBA. TNT would be the greatest channel ever! 🤣🤣🤣
