You're a benefit to have in any Aikido class i trained some police in N Ireland and they'd often come back and say 'I tried that last week '. Indeed I know policeman used sankyo on someone not leaving a car who locked his hands on the steering wheel. It's rare most people get real practice, so thanks for keeping it a living art.
I've always thought Aikido was an effective martial art. Like any art form, use common sense and the one that works best for you. I love you guys energy!

very cool I'm a bouncer and thankfully its a local place but I've used most of what you showed I'm older these kids have no respect its the new faces that cause trouble ty so much.
Problen with Aikido, is people watching don't understand it, even many who train in Aikido. The principles are sound, and I've used it practically many times. Love this guy cos he talks about self defense in a clear way. Too many other aikidoka have lost their way.
On a technical level, and in terms of "libraries of techniques", Aikido got the old school Jujutsu techniques that were practical in terms of retention of freedom and unarmed self defense suitable for being ready (not locked down fighting) for dealing multiple opponents, while Judo and BJJ got the sport-effective and one-on-one oriented techniques, like sacrifice throws and groundwork which are dangerous when you don't know for sure how many opponents you are dealing with. This is the correct way, on a technical level, to understand Aikido. Not dismissing it because it tends not to be very MMA-effective... but to understand that MMA is only one part of martial arts, or even that techniques can be effective in more ways than just as they are in the ring.
Spot-on analysis, sir. Every martial art focuses on certain aspects of fighting. There is no such thing as a perfect martial art, because there is no such thing as a perfect person. Every person has strengths and weaknesses, and thus each fighting system man creates will have strengths and weaknesses. Victory goes to the one who has trained and prepared enough to find and exploit his/her opponent's weaknesses.
Trained Yoshinkan Aikido for about 10 years. Nidan, graded in Japan by Shioda Kancho. You do good, realistic techniques. Only thing I would say is your Tenchi Nage looks more like an Irimi Nage to my eyes. And the Hije Shimi really looks more like a conventional hammerlock. Each to his own, not criticizing, just interesting choice of terminology.
I studied Aikido first, then Jits, then later Krav briefly. Jits was my fave but the injuries are frequent. The "artsy-ness" of Aikido seems to give it a bad rep when it comes to reality pummelling and brawling, etc, but many of the moves can be quite devastating; especially in a the situations you present. As far as being "squared off" against a very strong boxer/kickboxer, well that's another thing, but how often is that the case? The Jits guys - respect to them - always use the cage as the benchmark but it would seem a lot of bouncers/security use variants of Judo and Aikido throws and locks effectively. I like the plain, street/reality style Aikido you present in these vids. Thanks. Subscribed; and now wanting to take up Aikido again with a fresh perspective.
Actually, there is Aiki-jujutsu (or Aikijutsu), which as the name implies is a more aggressive or fight-oriented variation of Aikido and certainly way less "artsy", which is quite an accurate description of how Aikikai Aikido is practised in many schools today. This went so far, that e.g. Sensei Tohei Koichi came up with his 'Ki-Aikido' (Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido), which focuses very much on the flow of Ki right from the beginning, putting this style of Aikido quite far away from being a MA suitable for self defense. IMHO one needs to practice the techniques first before one may think of the Ki flowing through the body. But back to Aikijutsu. This goes back to a school called Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu, a traditional MA related to Jiu Jitsu, which was publicly teached under the name of Daito-ryu as of the end of the 19th century by Takeda Sokaku. One of his most prominent students was Ueshiba Morihei, who later developed the Aikido, as we know. The second son of Takeda Sokaku, Takeda Tokimune founded the Daito-ryu Aikibudo Main Dojo in the early 1950s in Abashiri on Hokkaido. Tokimunes student Kondo Katsuyuki today teaches Daito-ryu in Tokyo. Modern Japanese Jujutsu and Aikido both originated in Aiki-jujutsu, which emphasizes "an early neutralization of an attack". Today Aikijutsu and Daito-ryu is practiced only by a rather small community, so teachers and schools are not easy to find, unfortunately.
Thanks for making these videos. Kadena de mano and a bit of Jeet Kune Do have been my go-to for close in fighting (and Jits for going to ground... which I really don't care for), but I can see where some of these techniques are very useful. Some of these are similar to and flow well with Kadena, like sankyo and iriminage. We also trained a figure-4 lock and takedown which has proven quite effective. I can see where adding a bit of Aikido could be useful.
I combine taekwondo with boxing for punches and kicks. Judo, a buddy, taught me the basic overhead throw, which is the only move from Judo i like, but I'll see if i lean more, and now this will definitely help
Azu, love your videos! I'm not trying to be a know-it-all, but your "tenshinage" was really an "iriminage". Tenshinage is something totally different. Also, with sankyo, you need to control your attackers fingers so he can't make a fist and drive down. That's his way out, drive down and come up with the elbow to your jaw. If you use your other hand to draw the open fingers back toward his wrist, when he tries to drive down he hits another lock. At the very least, when you put the sankyo on with your left hand, separate out his little finger to add control. Keep it up! I love this stuff!!
I noticed the iriminage thing too. That being said, I think iriminage is an awesome technique - definitely seems like it would be practical from a variety of attacks.
MrPlayfulOtter No. Just no. :-) fingers in sankyo is a mistake. every joint you add adds flex. that allow uke movement, and the whole point is to deny them choices for movement. sankyo works against the wrist only. you're not bending the hand back (which is the only time adding the fingers in would have an effect). as for driving the hand down for the classic counter, it only works if they're on balance, which means you've got it wrong from the start: you must always have their balance.
While the wrist is where the torque happens, that's not where you grab for sankyo. Fingers can work, although from what I've seen, it only seems to work with people who have small fingers or joint pain in their fingers. From having struggled with the technique for a while now, it seems like grabbing uke's hand, with your middle finger at their knuckles, works with most (though not all) people. In other words, Azu's got the grip in the right spot.
I agree sankyo is on the wrist, I didn't say bend the hand back - you need to keep the fingers straightend, so if uke tries to drive down, HE will bend his hand back. There's nothing wrong with setting up multiple locks. As for balance, yes, you always control their balance, but I disagree that the counter can't work if they are off balance, the counter works - that is why it's a classic, and I wouldn't give someone the opportunity to bust my jaw, there are a lot of things in motion during a real fight.
I was saw an akido master being shot at by someone who he was threatening, the akido master then stopped the bullets in mid air using the power of seagal. Chilling
If someone did a high right hand jab or cross & you did a high right hand forearm block then go around their back (blind side & pull them back & down from their shoulders, would that be a good technique?
Awesome video Azu! Do you like to hook the chin upwards in that Tenchi Nage? I find that helps send em backwards. I like that you add that block/strike combo too!
Kwinten Kemp It's always a good idea to lift the chin up in this technique but when I have used it in a heated moment, I tend to forget and just power my way through. Still works great though.
Alot of the moves demostrated are shown in slow motion, however most attacks I've experienced have been fast and furious. Could you guys do some future defensive moves in real time speed. Some people move very quickly and no matter how practiced you are, they still hit you. Anyway I love what you do keep up the good work. Take care, stay true to you.

well i love you azu and i really like your enthusiasm and your videos. i have something to say though about then chi nagen (sorry, i don't know how to write it). first af all i don't know either if yours is aikikai and not takemusu aikido like mine or if yours is a sort of fighting aikido, but i learnt "ten chi nagen" in a so different way. i knew that you should have gone on the other side of the opponent keeping a low hand while the other around his neck (just like you did) indeed ten chi nagen means projection/fall ( does projection exist in english language?) of the earth (either ten or chi) and the sky (either ten or chi) so that one hand points the sky and the other the earth. let me you guys know if you you've learnt it different. hi from italy
u have to be fast strong and precise as hell. aikido is a philosophical system. this is all. do not believe it will save your life. combat techniques are a bunch of ideas "that" could be used in controlled conditions. only if your life really depend on this.. today.. a real street situation i recomend to look for help . the power comes from the arms of a strong man..

Sankyo is one effective technique. You can also throw someone from sankyo in such a manner that it might be fatal to the attacker.
Damn you, Azu! Your enthusiasm always gets me psyched to train. And your freestyle skills are improving. :)

Judo has a lot of the stuff people associate with aikido. It's just not practiced as much these days as it used to be except in certain kata.
Exactly! Very well said.

I wonder how most of these throw techniques work against a boxer with his guard up, chin down and keeping his arms tight (no large frame movements)
If aikido worked against real attackers we would've seen a vid by now.
I just love your tips ❤😍
