I think you missed a bit on the last one. There is another fear that humans have from an early age--that of falling. Showing how high up you are in that way, then making you carefully navigate forward is part of the feeling, too. It primes the player to be in a spooky mood, same as the music, so the spiders seem even spookier.
Non-linear sounds are my favorite. It's why I love bands like Animal Collective, MGMT, and Shpongle. Very tastefully balanced linear and non-linear sound to mess with your mind.
I'd love to see the research studies redone to evaluate how scary certain TV logos are. Some people are scared of the "Viacom V of Doom" and the "THX Deep Note".
Oh yeah the THX sound it always spooked me and my sister when we were kids watching Pixar movies to be honest the sound still sends chills up my spine to this day
In my opinion, the scariest part of Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon was the 5th mansion's "investigation" section. I mean seriously, for all other 4 investigations where completely separate, and not really animated. It blew away expectations when you went to gather information on the king boo. I mean, it was really well done.
I get a heart attack every time at the ghost jumpscare in luigi's mansion 3. You go to the balcony with some flowers, ravens and a telescope. You obviously watch through it and see a big detailed panorama with dark colours. Then, at the PERFECT timing (after 5 seconds or so), a ghost shows up blocking your sight. The developers knew exactly when to make the ghost appear and it's my scariest moment of the playthrough.
And the King Boo jumpscare in Dark Moon! In this game you study these still pictures of scenarios at the mansions, however in one of them you zoom in to king boo and out of nowhere BAM! I had a friend who was playing in the bathroom while I was at his house and I heard him let out a faint noise and asked "Did King Boo trick you?" It works because they're just still pictures so you don't expect it to move, kinda like night 5 in fnaf
Me too. I never expected a cartoony ghost to scare me. It gave me a smile afterwards. Another ghost that scared me was when you meet one of those grabbing ghosts in the garden hotel area. It's invisible and in front of a door. You approach the door and boo, it reveals itself while grabbing Luigi.
For me, the scariest part in the whole trilogy is when you are in the unnatural history museum in lm3 and you walk down the long corridor and after every flash of lightning the skeleton changes. This reminded me of the dinosaur from the wooded kingdom in super Mario odyssey. I hope they scare me that much in the next luigis mansion game.
I was surprised that wasn't what was going to be mentioned, it actually would've fit a lot better with the flow of the video too because the first part was about the unknown and lightning, an important core to horror movies, then sound which is another core and finally anticipation of a known threat/size. In the video though part 3 is just spiders which isn't as broad as the other two, also not everyone is scared of spiders, and it seems that there's less people scared of them nowadays as compared to even a few years ago in large part I think to people being introduced to them via animal lecturers and other videos(like, have you seen jumping spiders? They're too adorable to be scary). Even black widows don't scare me anymore because I see them all the time around my house and know not to mess with them and they certainly wouldn't go out of their way to try to hurt you. Now something like an ostrich or a honey badger is different, they have no fear and will hunt you down and mess you up just because they find your existence an annoyance to them.
When I was younger, I didn’t have a memory card. This meant that a fatal hit was a complete restart. For some reason this made the game more scary, as a fake door or a jump scaring ghost could mean the end of the run.
That isn’t actually made to sound scary and random. The notes of the song are in a way that it’s supposed to sound like the song is getting higher and higher while staying the same notes. Like how if you don’t have enough stars (or you don’t know how to do speedrunning tricks) you just keep going up and up and up...
@Kanashimi They're both built on the principle of something seemingly rising in pitch forever with somewhat hidden octave drops (though they're much more prevalent in the infinite staircase)
The sections in Dark Moon where you had to balance on the metal beams were really scary and intense because you could fall off and die at any moment while crossing to the other side.
The first Luigi's Mansion in its entirety was a masterclass in generating horror by keeping things unknown. Everything about the game--the setting, the camera angle, the fact that it's starring a character who is traditionally only a sidekick--they were all used to constantly make you feel like you didn't fully know what you were getting into. In my opinion, it worked fantastically.
I miss the atmosphere from the first game. I liked the sequels, especially the 3rd game, but the first game had just the right amount of horror for the series.
I'm totally digging that Thomas is back! Also, the intro is great, and the sciencey aspect of your videos is terrific! Keep up the great work, you're an awesome creator!!

This is such a well done video, Thomas! You totally should make a video about Eternal Darkness! It's a horror game made by Nintendo and Silicon Knights, with people like Shigeru Miyamoto, Satoru Iwata and Hiroshi Yamauchi as producers! Eternal Darkness is probably the most scary horror game I've ever played and no game hacks your brain more than that one. The game even mimicks things like save corruption and loading errors to screw with your mind.
I love how creepy the first game is, and Dark Moon is also really creepy at times and is my favorite! In fact, it scares me more than the original did...still creeps me out in some places! That part with the strange music was definitely creepy, but when I first played Dark Moon the creepiness really started to pick up after the first mansion! Random unexplained things moving in the dark (being made even creepier when you realize there is no ghost playing around), really ominous atmospheres and sounds, unexplainable events and occurances (take the Secret Mine for example when that certain strange figure flies across the scenery, and you must wonder if something's about to happen...) and even completely unexpected jumpscares where the game makes sure you are least expecting it did a good job in creeping me out and even startling me in Dark Moon! Overall, it was a fun experience, one of the best experiences with a game I ever had. And its length matched my pace at playing games! Anyone who has played the entire game, Dark Moon, past the first mansion would definitely have to admit Dark Moon had its really dark, creepy moments. But when everyone stops at the first mansion and basically judge the book by its cover, they claim the game isnt scary and never give it a chance to really see what it has to offer. Of course that, along with the huge amount of adventure it contains and the SUSPENSE...it makes Dark Moon my favorite Luigi's Mansion. Even after Luigi's Mansion 3. Especially after Luigi's Mansion 3, actually. 3 kind of disappointed me, though the beginning was REALLY good I must admit. So good, I'm willing to replay the beginning again. But just the beginning. I'm surprised you couldn't find anything creepier to mention than a mere spider room. Really? Thats all you could find? When I went into a room full of spiders, I didnt have a problem flashing them and just being on my way, simple. The tiny little pests arent what make a Luigi's Mansion game scary. I thought you were going to mention that really ominous beginning I enjoyed, just as ominous as Dark Moon can get later on! (I can even make a whole list of the really creepy parts of Dark Moon. As you might expect, most arent a part of the first mansion...but past the first mansion, things do get good if thats what someones looking for).
Dark Moon's ghost themes are the scariest imo Some of them are like the original; kinda unsettling when you first hear it, but nothing scary But others are less cartoony and genuinely frightening, and it made me tense up Even with those themes though, there's still other tracks that are so ominous and if you were to show someone who've never played the game without telling them where it came from, they wouldn't be able to tell you The garage and antechamber are some of the creepiest tracks I've ever heard (there's more but I forget the names) There's something about them that gives me unease when playing; a sudden sense of tension which isn't as straightforward as the other moments in the game, jumpscares are a good example of that Jumpscares have a source of the scariness but those tracks don't have a clear source; we have no clear idea what's making those noises other than just speculating Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is underrated and holds a lot of creepiness, glad to see someone agrees
I thought the beginning of Luigi's Mansion 3, right after the hotel changes from normal to sp00ky, was quite scary too. With the empty, half-destroyed rooms, where a few hours ago you said goodnight to your brother and his girlfriend. I guess the opening section creates a false sense of security, and even though the entire game is made in such a cartoony style, it made an impression on me.
The thing is, i remember when Thomas asked if anyone had some footage of picking up Luigi's Mansion in a dark room, for a moment I became so hyped because my sister had the 3DS version, then he said that he needed the GameCube version, and i slowly sat down again, knowing that i wouldnt be able to do it
i remember being tense while playing the first one and getting spooped by random ghost or boos, and with Dark moon and 3D the 1st boss gave me a heart attack :'^)
I remember in Dark Moon that when Luigi heads up to the Old Clockwork, there is a short cutscene in which Luigi shines his flashlight left and right while facing the screen and u see King Boo behind him smiling. Now that was a real spook.
King Boo popping up in the dark, and the flashlight just missing him combined with Luigi’s frightened mumbling was something that got me. The piano mission both scared me, being a wimp, but made me love the game even more, being a pianist. The first boss I just didn’t like because, arachnophobia.
What actually scared me in dark moon was when you entered the last mansion after getting the entrance key and king boo lighting up in the dark hall way That was horrifying
Oooo yeah I remembe that part! That was awesome. And remember when they were looking at the security image of all the boos and regular ghosts messing around and King Boo turned around in the image and started laughing! That was probably my favourite part of the whole game, I just really love his laugh for some reason.
Just the other day I was wondering why are people so afraid of bugs and spiders, since they're so tiny. I didn't expect the answer would come from Thomas Game Docs XD. Good video, man
Luigi's Mansion 1 and 3 are such excellent games. In some ways, I truly believe 1 is the best - so atmospheric, such minimal music, ghosts quietly humming the main tune when the lights are off, out of site but ever present. And once the lights turned on, they STAYED on, giving you permanent safe rooms. 3 is probably the "best" game, as it has a good mixture of creepy and kooky. And King Boo looks freaking sweet, definitely Nintendo's scariest villain. Bowser is big and intimidating, classic great bad guy. King Boo, however, is truly terrifying, exuding and aura of evil, the likes of which Bowser just doesn't come close to. 2 fell short, in my opinion. Good game, but inferior to 1 and 3.
Luigi's Mansion is pretty unique game imo, and does a good job of putting Luigi in the spotlight. I feel Luigi's Mansion is the most creepy one, Dark Moon was a bit more cartoonish, buy is respectable and does a great job at certain parts, and 3 did a good job of returning to the first one, while keeping the cartoonish look from Dark Moon.
God damn, I played all three Luigi's Mansion games and there was at least ONE thing that scared me. In the original...it was the baby. In Dark Moon, it was the demented laughing of the Ghosts... In 3? The dinosaur boss fight.
9:26 this room scared me a lot, I wasn't expecting that at all!! It gave me anxiety because i wanted all the money but at the same time i wanted to get out as fast as i could because of that creepy music. It felt like something was going to happen and that i should get out before it happen 😬
I remember when I went to bed and my little sister was hiding around the corner and I saw her hand And I guess she heard me and yanked her hand back I did not know what it was at first and that scared me more than seeing her
I actually am attrackted to the unknown as the known is kinda predictable, the unknown don't always have to be scary if its scary its kinda predictable too because you try to find someting scary.
Same here, I’m honestly really scared to play them during the night. There’s really no specific reason for it, I just feel like I’m somehow threatened lol
Fun Fact: The original Beta of Luigi's Mansion was intended to be MUCH "scarier" than the final release, so much that it was going to be rated T. But of course, Nintendo saw that as a no-no for the kiddies and toned it down a bit. However I'm not sure if this is exactly true, but it's still an interesting thought.
9:42 Him: You're Horrified, Paralyzed, With Fear Me: *cries of laughter because of how the spiders are so cute and it's silly crab-like walking animation along with the quantity of them* Edit: I wasn't afraid at all in that part
I can’t be the only one who thinks Luigi’s Mansion hasn’t felt the same since the first one. It’s not become “bad”. The games are great, but the first one is waaaaay better than the other two
Another lesser example of the music, not as scary or anything, but the dark moon boss where the leadup was climbing up stairs. the music was simplistic, consisting of a single rising and dropping melody, but as you went up the stairs, it got more intense, and one mistake sent you back to the bottom. Youre 90% of the way up, and SHINK, you slide all the way back to the bottom. It wasnt scary, but it was intense, man. Also that boss at the top was the objectively lamest in the series.
The best example of the more intenser (?) music though, isnt jaws, or anything else in movies or even a horror game. it is 100% sonic drowning music. Just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine. It starts off rather quiet, getting faster, faster, more instruments, faster, quicker still, more instruments getting louder as youre frantically trying to resurface, faster, youre getting so close, you can see it, just gotta get to the spring, and finishing the tune buildup reminiscent of a day in the life by the beatles, it stops and you immediately die. the end.
Know this is like a year old, but I'm kinda on a binge.. Just wanted to add also as someone who grew up with literally zero dangerous spiders around me, I can tell right away those spiders look like huge black widow spiders..
about the pupil experiment: pupils get bigger if you love something or feel comfortable pupils get smaller if you're tense and worked up that's why (for example) in anime, when a character goes full psycho, their pupils get unrealistically small (because that happens irl too) also, when you're high, (high, not stoned) your pupils get big af too
I actually wished they kept Luigi's mansion a bit more jumpy and scary. The first game scares me even now when I'm much older. And even when I was younger and watched my Brother play Dark Moon, the game wasn't AT ALL scary to me.. And that makes me a bit disappointed since the point of Luigi's Mansion was to make you feel on edge and constantly fearful. The next two Luigi's Mansion games weren't really like that. I was just sad that unique little feeling that made the whole game so special was taken away..
I was expecting the build up to the final boss for 3's moment. Not sure what it was, but I was very tense as you slowly follow Mario up to the top of the hotel
I just want to make my bastard of the details ok ! 00:38 2001 ? well not for you it's seems, because you play the game in pal so it was 2002 ! Also but the player's choice version of this game in Europe was released in late 2003, and the version you actually have in your hands in the video, is the version released after mid 2005 ! 4:40 that's not 12 years later !!! Luigi's mansion 2 was released in march 2013 worldwide, and Luigi's mansion 1 (as i said previously) was released in late 2001 in USA and japan, and in march 2002 in Europe... So 11 years later !

I think you missed a bit on the last one. There is another fear that humans have from an early age--that of falling. Showing how high up you are in that way, then making you carefully navigate forward is part of the feeling, too. It primes the player to be in a spooky mood, same as the music, so the spiders seem even spookier.
So that's why I'm so scared by the pits in Super Mario Bros.
Ahem... *spoopy**
Also, the area where the spiders are is pretty small, this was done to cause claustrophobia.
What?

The scariest parts of Dark Moon were the two King Boo jumpscares near the end of the game!
I found the scariest part of the first game to be when all the power is shutdown. And you have to weave through all the previous areas you conquered.

Dark Moon's ghost themes are the scariest imo
Some of them are like the original; kinda unsettling when you first hear it, but nothing scary
But others are less cartoony and genuinely frightening, and it made me tense up
Even with those themes though, there's still other tracks that are so ominous and if you were to show someone who've never played the game without telling them where it came from, they wouldn't be able to tell you
The garage and antechamber are some of the creepiest tracks I've ever heard (there's more but I forget the names)
There's something about them that gives me unease when playing; a sudden sense of tension which isn't as straightforward as the other moments in the game, jumpscares are a good example of that
Jumpscares have a source of the scariness but those tracks don't have a clear source; we have no clear idea what's making those noises other than just speculating
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is underrated and holds a lot of creepiness, glad to see someone agrees
The new addition of illustrations are really satisfying to the eye. I applaud the artist 😌
The scariest part is, I've played Luigis Mansion1, 2 and 3 and yet never heard of the existence of a Luigis Mansion remake for the 3ds until now
I think Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is HEAVILY underrated.
It's a fascinating game, and it takes me back to getting my first 3DS in 2012.
The thing is, i remember when Thomas asked if anyone had some footage of picking up Luigi's Mansion in a dark room, for a moment I became so hyped because my sister had the 3DS version, then he said that he needed the GameCube version, and i slowly sat down again, knowing that i wouldnt be able to do it
Your sister is a he?
I only mentioned my sister once in this comment, other time I said he I was referring to Thomas
@@NoahHalfSquid no he's talking about Thomas
@@gabediasfernandes1073 bruh he said that, and this is 9 months old lol
@@NoahHalfSquid so what
I can't believe that this video called my mind dumb
i think whats scarier is the sudden jump scares. comes up out of no where.
i remember being tense while playing the first one and getting spooped by random ghost or boos, and with Dark moon and 3D the 1st boss gave me a heart attack :'^)
11:25 Personally I just was happy to have money by killing them
I thought the big thing for the spider room in Luigi's Mansion 3 was how cramped and trapped you were with spiders in every direction
What actually scared me in dark moon was when you entered the last mansion after getting the entrance key and king boo lighting up in the dark hall way
That was horrifying
And also the moment when he moved in that security picture!
Oooo yeah I remembe that part! That was awesome. And remember when they were looking at the security image of all the boos and regular ghosts messing around and King Boo turned around in the image and started laughing! That was probably my favourite part of the whole game, I just really love his laugh for some reason.
As soon as you started explaining non-linear sounds an earthquake occurred where I live, interesting
Just the other day I was wondering why are people so afraid of bugs and spiders, since they're so tiny. I didn't expect the answer would come from Thomas Game Docs XD. Good video, man
I wondered as well, having severe arachnophobia. I wondered, why the heck am I scared of a spider the size of a small shirt button.
The best scares happen when you least expect them. Second rule of horror.
Luigi games: Play mind games and scare you. Mario games: Run and jump and say "Yahoo!"
The biggest scare I got in the Luigi's Mansion series is the "picture" on the start up of level E-3. That being in dark moon
I love the illustrations in this video! They’re beautiful as well as cohesive
you sound like my teacher trying to fit the lesson's vocabulary into every single scenario
wow okay you can use the comments section during a premier
cool
Your videos always make me happy! They are so interesting and well made :3
All I could think of when I saw the spider room was "Ooooh, a bunch of free money!" :D
For me luigis mansion was perfect in audio. I was just humming luigis theme, just like luigi did in-game
I remember when I first saw the orange blurry ghost I was like oh. ok. I was probably to dumb to understand it.
I'll never forgive Dark Moon for that jumpscare before the Area 5 mission.
Good game, but inferior to 1 and 3.
this channel is so underrated
Dude I’m an adult but that chase scene at the beginning of luigis mansion 3 scared the SHIT outta me.
This is such an interesting video I’m gonna watch this channel again
I remember getting the dark moon game on my 7th birthday ( I think ) and I thought the creepy piano was just background music haha
Eternal Darkness: Am I a joke to you?
My exact thoughts.
Groovy video - your production quality has hugely improved since I last watched. Keep up the awesome work!
0:41 this is a Turkish antique store, I can say by looking at the pictures and specifically Atatürk picture on top.

I remember when I went to bed and my little sister was hiding around the corner and I saw her hand
And I guess she heard me and yanked her hand back
I did not know what it was at first and that scared me more than seeing her
Luigi’s mansion 3 had a jump scare and it scared the crap out of me 😔
I actually am attrackted to the unknown as the known is kinda predictable, the unknown don't always have to be scary if its scary its kinda predictable too because you try to find someting scary.
Great video! Absolutely loved the illustrations!!! Keep it up!
0:45 those words hurted me and i loved it
I love how when you play that sorta intro scene backwards, it looks like Luigi's just like "I'm outta here!"
Katie's drawings are so cool and so Katie I love them
eyyy anna :)))) thank you!! xxxx
When portrait ghosts were gotten rid of luigis mansion instantly became less fun
The piano scarred me the first time I heard it as a kid
To be honest I find games like legend of zelda more terrifying, not because of any weird brain science, but just because it’s enemy’s are unsettling
Same here, I’m honestly really scared to play them during the night. There’s really no specific reason for it, I just feel like I’m somehow threatened lol
I love Mario so much ! Thanks for the science
Man, you want to analyse spooky Nintendo? Just boot up Ocarina of Time and go beneath the well!
Or boot up Majora's Mask and look around.
@@thecommonman9524 yes the starting was so dark and the environment was so dark
BeN DrOWnEd???
Luigi’s Mansion 2001 creeped me out as a kid!
Respect for all people on premiere.
Fun Fact:
The original Beta of Luigi's Mansion was intended to be MUCH "scarier" than the final release, so much that it was going to be rated T. But of course, Nintendo saw that as a no-no for the kiddies and toned it down a bit. However I'm not sure if this is exactly true, but it's still an interesting thought.
You have to see the trailer
9:42
Him: You're Horrified, Paralyzed, With Fear
Me: *cries of laughter because of how the spiders are so cute and it's silly crab-like walking animation along with the quantity of them*
Edit: I wasn't afraid at all in that part
I can’t be the only one who thinks Luigi’s Mansion hasn’t felt the same since the first one. It’s not become “bad”. The games are great, but the first one is waaaaay better than the other two
The spiders are not the scary part, it's the music.
It starts off rather quiet, getting faster, faster, more instruments, faster, quicker still, more instruments getting louder as youre frantically trying to resurface, faster, youre getting so close, you can see it, just gotta get to the spring, and finishing the tune buildup reminiscent of a day in the life by the beatles, it stops and you immediately die. the end.
oh god those stairs were such a pain haha
I am oddly not scared of spiders, mildly more with snakes, but not very much once I'm used to it. For me it'd be just be a nice room spiders
No wonder I was always felt weird playing Luigi's mansion dark moon.
Know this is like a year old, but I'm kinda on a binge.. Just wanted to add also as someone who grew up with literally zero dangerous spiders around me, I can tell right away those spiders look like huge black widow spiders..
I have Luigi's Mansion 3, and Polterkitty is the scariest part.
WOW! I’ll be sure to make a complain to Nintendo for privacy breech, they saw my brain!
9:46 - "Ok, let's get that off the screen, shall we?"
*(Puts it right back up immediately after the fade to black)*
Also the original death animation of Luigi was super scary
Can we just mention how freakin scary the moma spider from dark moon and the polterkitty from lm3 are
about the pupil experiment:
pupils get bigger if you love something or feel comfortable
pupils get smaller if you're tense and worked up
that's why (for example) in anime, when a character goes full psycho, their pupils get unrealistically small (because that happens irl too)
also, when you're high, (high, not stoned) your pupils get big af too
I actually wished they kept Luigi's mansion a bit more jumpy and scary.
The invisible man is exactly the same you dont know where he is it makes the film stand out. It's a masterpiece
Everyone: live chat
Me: normal comments section lol
What do you think of Eternal Darkness?
So 11 years later !
non linear sounds: speaker turned up too loud, marmot alert scream, violin bow scratch, bass boosted toad sings never gonna give you up. Deeply unsettling that last one is
I love how he shows that in Europe it’s called Luigi mansion 2, not dark moon.
