- On the morning of the 16th January 1914, the submarine A7 was exercising in Whitsands Bay. She dived to carry out a mock attack on her escorts and failed to resurface. Her crew of eleven officers and men were never seen again.
The A7’s sinking was the latest in a long lie of accidents to afflict this class of submarine, and there had been at least fifty eight deaths in the run up to the outbreak of the First World War.
The loss of the A7 caused a storm of protest, not only from the general public, but in Parliament as well. Many MPs asked why these ‘Coffin Ships’ were still allowed to operate when they were so obviously obsolete and unfit for duty.
The submarine, once seen as an unwanted oddity, was now seen as a threat to the established order, and the Royal Navy made many mistakes as it tried to embrace the huge changes in tactics that were being forced upon it by the looming reality of global warfare.
The A7 was one of those mistakes.
Produced and directed by Peter Mitchell. A Submerged Production.
So rare to find such a well made and factual program these days many thanks for sharing.
Underrated doc 100%
Excellent! Comprehensive research, well filmed, but above all, narration that is well written and well delivered. It's a joy to hear Royal Navy terminology delivered correctly and with authority. Well done!
Pity more viewers might not have shown some appreciation for this very good production with more "likes".
The meticulously detailed analysis of this horrific incident was particularly interesting and informative, very well presented and narrated together with excellent, relevant imagery and film footage.
Thank you for creating this superb historical account of an avoidable tragedy of which I was unaware.
Wow, that was a great documentary.
Well done on the presentation of the facts surrounding the sinking of Submarine A7. I am always amazed by the facts that arrogance and downright stupidity have brought events like this to the forefront. RIP A7, your training and patrols are at an end.
wrong they are on eternal patrol when a sub is lost they join the eternal patrol the thresher scorpion and all other submarines that have been lost due to accident or attacks have joined eternal patrols i just wish they found the giant french sub she escaped france before it fell joined free french disappeared
in USA we had similar problems due mostly to arrogance of the bureaucrats of the navy
one winner of medal honor was a former british citizen he saved countless lives during one of our teething problems he saved countless lives but yeah bureaucrats were responsible for at least three sinkings of subs in world war 2 he stated publically that the japanese couldnt hit our subs due to their depth charge settings this got back to the japanese who started setting deeper couple subs didnt make it home soon after he opened mouth
Very good documentary. Very well done
Living a few miles away from cawsand and whitsand bay its good that this is acknowleded. When showing pictures of the area of cawsand the white building that stands alone is named pier sellers where these very boats were loaded with their torpedos and refuelling took place. Todays it is used as the nearby training establishment for the navy recruits at hms raleigh, as an outbound training area for a weekend before a week where they head off onto dartmoor...
Great concept, a few add on features and I'm going to buy one for myself.
so very sad with all of the loss of life
'Welcome 2 our vid: U will B sued', so paraphrased. At least B accurate - Cressy was not a battle cruiser, merely a sister of the other 2 armored cruiser victims of U-9.
Good 2 see Jackie Fisher, my favorite madman: He indeed saw submarines as the demise of battleships, but all in due time. Also, dreadnoughts merely reconfigured the Anglo-German naval race, rather than starting it; the German navy laws began in 1898 (China, take note).
The horror of this event Was well conveyed in this vid, strangely magnified by anachronistic shots of WW2 French light DDs, Rodney BBs, American Allen class DDs, etc. I did very much like the shots of the Dryad class TGB/sub mother ship, and the old HMS Forth (💜). Kaiser Willy is another of my favorite madmen, but this tale, overall, makes my gut ache.
A couple decades ago, some local genius made ceramic 'wrecked' Holland - type sub models as aquarium decorations. They were so good that I was tempted 2 get one, tho' having no aquarium. A morbid reminder of all the sunken early boats.
Still On Patrol............but not forgotten
It shows the ‘Edwardian’ attitude and stubbornness of the Navy, which doesn’t seem to have changed
24:15.....nice shot of the Hood.
he got the three cruisers cause they thought it was a minefield and stopped dead slow if they kept going they would have lost one ship not three
Fair winds and following seas my brothers of the deep . We are not sub mariners , sir . SSN 583
Holland said ‘This is my Holland 1 ,here is the petrol & engine to the right & the left we have the torpedo & so don’t worry it’s totally reliable & safe now who’s in on this me ???’ 🙁
Not battle cruisers they were armoured cruisers built before the battle cruisers indefatigable invincible and inflexible
is A7 declared a military wreck?
Well done, but why is what appears to be a Polish seaman searching for her?
