Great memories. We got a TV in 1959 or so. I watched axel every day until I found Mel Jazz's Afternoon Matinee. I saw most 2nd runs of movies of 40s and 50s. What brings Axel up for me is his birthday song. " Happy Happy Birthday to every girl and boy. Hope this very special day brings you lots of joy, Hope your birthday presents you get from mom and dad, Will make this very special day the best you ever had.
I was born in 1954 and I grew up with Axel. I particularly enjoyed the adult aspects of his humor even as a kid. The axle show was on Monday through Saturday mornings. The Saturday shows were particularly funny especially when I found out about 10 years after Clellan Card died. Half the time he did the Saturday show hung over. But he was still great. Keep in mind that this was a live program that came on at 7o’clock in the morning. You always end of the shell with a birdie with the yellow bill joke. My favorite one: Birdie with the yellow bill popped up on my windowsill cocked a shining eye at me and said: What did you do when your wife bought a mink coat? Hanger?
I grew up on Axel in the 1960s...boy does this bring back memories! Thanks for posting this! My mom LOVED Axel and used to watch his show with me. He always made her laugh.
Thank you for sharing one of the best parts of my childhood. What a RICH gift to us boomers in Minnesnowda. I still use my Axel speak to drive the wife nuts.
Wow. My husband mentioned a character named Towser in a mystery he's reading and it seemed so familiar to me as a dog's name. After only ten minutes of searching on the interwebs I had learned of its use and meaning as a dog's name and then was watching this and other clips from Axel's show that was part of my childhood in St. Paul, Minnesota. Memories of watching Axel with my brother flooded back. So much about him and this show have remained with me without my even realizing it. Absolutely amazing!
Wow!! Chicago 'Midwest' entertainment, huh?? And the keyword being here, is 'Midwest'!! I guess they would be befuddled, if they were to experience, east coasts' original "Dr. Shock", ROLAND. Or the 2nd. "Dr. Shock". The narrator says, that Axel was the most popular children's show, of it's day. What, bigger than 'Howdy Doody'?

My grandmother's brother was named Axle, family came from Norway.
I seen just the final 3-4 months of his show before his passing. IF cable had been around then, I'm sure he would have been much bigger.
The kids were heartbroken when Axel died.
I laughed so hard & physically HURT!
Axel is buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights. Please go say hello.
A children's icon. Sorry that Axel died.
to this day. I still say puut, and sasconsi. also. people still name their dogs Towser and cats Tallulah, especially if the cats are naughty
Axe and Stiffy?
I love seeing this as I grew up watching Axel as a kid.
Your intro music though, is very bad. Why couldn’t you get the original?
