      Barry reminds me of Prince. When Prince wanted to change something regarding a song or didn't like something. It didn't matter what time of the day it was, Prince contacted everyone involved.

    One thing I learned about Smoke is he is ALWAYS gonna give you the truth whenever he interviews. I remember him admitting to too much ego and drug/alcohol abuse in an interview with Donnie Simpson years ago. Gotta love him for the honesty.

      Absolutely right! That’s why I will ALWAYS tune into or read an article with Smokey, Quincy, Jasmine Guy or Chaka Khan(there might be a few others) because their telling the truth as they see it and it makes for the best interviews.

    What's brilliant about this segment. He's literally giving anyone who is songwriter a blueprint. He has made two references how he basically wrote songs in a form of a response to what popular song was on the radio at the time
    Simple but genius. Speak to the ppl, sell them what they WANT to hear

    Smokey is legendary! Him, being a fascinating and a brillant song writer and artist is spectucular! And putting icing on the cake, he so deserved being "President of Motown!"     The 1st Lady of Motown and Smokey's 1st wife Claudette was not only brilliant but also beauty! Smokey KNEW all this and it factored MAJORLY into him marrying young. Plus the era they were in you got married early.

      I have a brother three years younger than me. He was always a bit effeminate in his ways. When that song would come on the radio I always noticed he would always sing with feeling "I don't care if they start to avoid me, I don't care what they do." and ""people can change, they always do, haven't they noticed the changes in you." It was then I realized he was gay waaay before he ever came out. That song always had so much meaning to him.

      I don’t know if this generation, really generations since the 1990s actually know what love is since they’ve had so few love slongs. They’ve had lots and lots of songs about sex but few songs about love. (ps... I know mass marketed songs don’t make anyone “know” what love is but the cultural influence and impact of music/art/ commercialism is undeniable.)

I was born in 62 so I might have a very different perspective than you. When someone hears My Girl they automatically know who wrote it as well as who sang it. That goes for numerous other songs covered by other artists that Smokey wrote. Anyway I get your point it was just the comparison

    Generation X will understand how huge this man's impact was throughout the 60s. Hell us baby boomers had the best era. Stax, Motown of the 60s and earlier part of the 70s during their peak, Atlantic with Jerry Wexler as the main producer, James Brown era and more... GenX had who? Madonna and R Kelly throughout their teens and 20s. Embarrassing
