The Edge has always had a beautiful, warm, rich, dynamic, ethereal quality to his sound. What brilliant TONE! No one plays or sounds like him, or like the band themselves. So glad I've been there since the beginning listening to the changes. The old stuff is still the best.
That sense of urgency in their early music (Boy - War) just makes me smile. I loved just about everything they did between Boy and Pop, but everything from The Unforgettable Fire and onward was a lot more produced. Produced well, and they produced some of the best songs of the 80s and 90s. But there is something to be said for raw energy.
@bminturn they started using sequencing for live performances on the War Tour. 1980-1982, every note you heard was live. After that, a combination of recorded and live. By the time of ZooTV the music was so complex, they needed an entire team on stage and under the stage to produce the sound the audience heard. Interestingly, when the band performed live at the Super Bowl halftime in 2002, they refused to use any backing tracks, which almost led to disaster as both Bono’s 🎤 and Edge’s 🎸 both came to close to failing. The early performances do sound raw, it’s a sound the band will never return to.
Tiny Tim's outside and he's eating candy mice, and the plastic dolly laughs while she eats her curried rice, I hear the Martian crying and I know it's time to see a fish, hear the volleyball named Wilson singing and he's cooking some cotton candy in a dish.. There is more to this concert the version I had was horrible it had been copied after copy after copy on lp speed if you speak VCR you know the most slowest worst speed for replay ever.

Early U2...the best U2
Indeed! After War everything went downhill.
The driving bass of Clayton and the amazing playing of Larry are just so good and underrated

The bass sounds amazing in that show. Rarely heard it mixed so well and sound so punchy.
11 O Clock Tick Tock still sounds vital. Could have been recorded today. Amazing.
Indeed. Deserves a new rendition with back vocals and stuff...
classic U2 moments the best ever
Quel bonheur ! Je les aime de plus en plus... Toujours dans mon esprit quand j'en ai besoin 😉
adam clyaton's bassline in the eraly days of u2 was sounds something brilliant...
Great passion from Both Audience and Band, And it sounded great to, Magic.
The times when one could be in the front stage touching the musiciens without being punched by the "gorillas" protecting the stars on stage.
amazing song --- if that guitar riff starting at 4:15 doesn't get you pumped, nothing will - they should do it present day
This song, since the very first day I heard it , has always given me the chills.
when im playing along with my bass i cant help but head for the G to pick up the riff --- every time
incredible sound
Bono so young, nice memory, Séb!
They're so precious
edge's gear : gibson explorer 76', 2 deluxe memory man pedals and VOX ac30 TB! what a sound!!
Magnifici
incredible..I love you Bono, I love U2
the edge is the Eienstien of his generation
They took the torch where Joy Division left it in may 1980 and brought it to fantastic heights.
Grandi
Quando gli U2 erano gli U2
Young bono was so cute and hansome, i cant stand
Esto es tan tierno. Apenas unas criaturas.OMG

mullets galore.
It was McMordie Hall Queen's University Belfast
4:29 rock
headband, fur jacket...not typical look for bono then (well or ever). He was clearly trying something..... That he shoudn't have
EDGE
Golly, this is early isn't it, they look like kids just out of school still.
Was this gig in the Macefield Leisure centre? I might have been there!!😮
Students Union, Queens University, Belfast
bono was possed way back, even during this song
Was Adam even going through a bass amp back then? He may as well have been playing a Rickenbacker (I think he had one.)
