  • How to Use the API Freshwater Master Test kit.
    One of the most important things a new fishkeeper can learn is how to test the water parameters. The API Master Test Kit is the gold standard for testing water. The API test kit is very easy to use.

    Michael, thanks for all you do. Much appreciated. 2 tips: I regularly test water and I have found I save some time starting with the 2 that take the longest to get results, Ammonia and Nitrates. While I’m waiting I do the other tests quickly. Because I also use a pipette and don’t want to cross-use the test tubes, I use a sharpie to write on the outside of the test tubes and cover it with clear packing tape so it won’t wear away. Be well and safe to all.

    Awesome video Michael, big thumbs up!!!
    I think API dropped the ball though calling the kit "Master Test Kit". GH & KH are also very important. Besides knowing your pH so you can keep fish that do good with it one really needs to know the hardness too. Example; My tap water comes out with 6.8 pH which I like because it turns the deadly ammonia into a safer ammonium. But my tap water has 0 GH & KH. All fish and plants need a certain amount of hardness. So I have to add say Seachem Equilibrium to a level for my angelfish tanks. Then I have to add a bit more for my guppy tanks. Fish need it for osmoregulation and plants also need it to live and thrive. One other test I would recommend is for testing chlorine from city water supplies. Don't have to use it constantly but I found (smelled stronger chlorine) my water has more chlorine during the summer than winter. So I double dose my chlorine remover in the summer.

      wow you have really good soft water for discus, i have to use ro/di water and put some gh minerals back in the water, the best thing about ro/di is i take out the chloramines and nitrates before it goes in my tank. my gh-78ppms ph- 6,4 its great for soft water fish.joe h navy seabee

    • @James_Hande
      @James_Hande 4 роки тому

      @@petroman-cg8tt Once I fix my cracked 125G tank I plan on having some discus. My problem with such soft water is I have been adding Seachem Equilibrium to my tanks which has been getting expensive with all my breeding/rearing tanks. I'm ordering soon the minerals separately and mixing my own which will be way cheaper. This water source is new to me as I moved here a couple years ago. My previous water was well balanced and worked fine for all types of fish.

(I’m new here) but my fish in cycle is looking decent except I discovered I have water that is on the softer side right out of the tap and even softer once in the tank. I was given Seachem Replenish and just dosed both my 20 and 10 gals. I’m sitting at about 50ppm on the test strip for GH and my PH is about 7.6. Ammonia 0 Nitrite is spiking and no nitrate yet. Hello Michael! I am confused on why everything is measuring ok except my Nitrites. Ph is 7.4, Ammonia is 0, Nitrates are .50-1.0 &Nitrates are about a 5.0. My tank has been cycling for 6 weks. No fish yet. I want to upgrade my nano to a 10 gallon but I will kill my fish. Help please.

    In this beginner's series... could you exlpain how to lower the hardness in your water. I have hard water and would like to get some green neon tetras that are supposed to need soft water. My guppies of course don't mind it at all. I'd sure appreciate your help. I know I won't get any b.s. from u. 😎👍🍄✌

      @@MichaelsFishRoom Maybe he is pointing out you did not shake the tube where both #1 and #2 test liquid added for 1 min,not 5 seconds shake. #2 test is to be shaken 30 seconds vigorously and test tube with both liquid should be shaken for 1 min. I do not know how much test result gets off from accurate result, but instruction booklet says so.
