    Matterhorn Bobsleds: replace it or rebuild it?

    • @danieltaber4924

      A side effect of rebuilding the Matterhorn- you get to fix the bits of the Skyway that went through it.

      Looking at it from the historical aspect: no.
      It's the first tubular steel roller coaster... ever.
      The granddaddy of every steel coaster in existence. Every coaster today owes it to that ride. And seeing that original track go away, while probably better as a ride, would see the loss of something greater than just a ride.
      I understand the sentiment, but being a coaster history nerd I really want it to stay.

      Haunted Mansion? Dude, I’m with you, it is my favorite ride in any park… I think I would want them to completely tent it and rebuild the heck out of… only thing that could not change is the mansion itself, upon further thought… most of the ride is in the outer warehouse, so they could do a tear down/rebuild.

    You hit the nail on the head. Current Disney should not be trusted to fix or update any rides you love. Bottom line is all that matters, and too many of the best imagineers left, shows what you need to know. Need new CEO and others, those with a creative minx.

    • @___David__
      @___David__ 2 роки тому +20

      Current CEO isn't the problem. The Board of Directors is. You need to clean Disney out of all the Iger people before you can successfully recentre the company and focus it again on creativity instead of being a tool for the political games and aspirations of a former CEO.

      You're kind of missing a key point. Some rides do need to be retired eventually. Wear and Tear takes its toll over time. Some lower stress systems can be easily maintained and kept updated and operational for the foreseeable future. The Haunted Mansions for example. But some stuff does face decision points. And I know somebody deeply loves every single ride. But eventually they face the choice of major overhaul vs retheme vs tear down and build something new. And a lot of the oldest classic rides were not built originally with repair and renovation baked in. How much gnashing of teeth would you hear among Disneyland fans if they announced tomorrow that they were closing Autopia to build a West Coast Tron Lightcycle?

    The issue with tearing down and rebuilding anything within Disneyland is zoning laws. Matterhorn was built when zoning laws were more laxed, so they were able to build the mountain as we have it now. Tearing it down could make it impossible to rebuild it under current laws and in turn, make it impossible for Disney to put something there in its place beyond a short dark ride since they'd be unable to build a new mountain like ride there and would instead have to do a lot of changes if they'd even have a hope of rebuilding it. This may also be why the tracks aren't being replaced, because again, zoning laws make it harder to do that.

    • @Mike__B
      @Mike__B 2 роки тому +3

      What's special about it though? I mean I get it, the now residents of Anaheim may have different rules, but it's really no different than a roller coaster at Knotts, Six Flags, or any other amusement park in the area is it?
      That said, if they don't replace the Matterhorn I'd be fine with it, nostalgia can be a horribly convenient excuse to keep things around.

    • @disneyparksloveraz
      @disneyparksloveraz 2 роки тому +23

      Actually, it's building codes that have changed, not zoning laws.

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 2 роки тому +6

      @@Mike__B What makes it more complicated is the coaster within the enclosed structure. It's not impossible. Just would require a lot of permitting and inspections and regulations etc. They might be able to slap down the proven designs from Expedition Everest and get relatively easy approval from local governments, or they may need to reinvent the wheel for them. But California remains a nightmare to build anything new.

    • @Mike__B

      @Alejandro Yeah I don't "frequent" the park because I'm not a local nor do I have an annual pass that allows me the freedom to observing the sight lines as part of my visit.
      I care about the experience, and as it stands the experience of the Matterhorn is just not good. It's painful, it's bump, it absolutely feels like a 60+ year old roller coaster that is badly in need of refurbishment/replacement.
      Now I really don't care what happens to it as long as something does happen to it. Gut the interior and redo all the track for all I care to make a smoother ride. Turn it into a big dark ride type experience similar to the dome at Epcot. Or level the whole thing and call it part of the Tomorrowland expansion since it really doesn't fit in any land.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you can't view Disneyland from an architecture's view point. I'm just not sure that's really big on most visitor's minds while in the park.

      @@Mike__B it was already decided Tomorrowland will actually be shrinking with the Matterhorn and part of the land going to Fantasyland expansion since the largest footprint in the land is Autotopia and The Subs. Between the area taken from Tomorrowland and the theater Fantasyland will get a new attraction and a sitdown restaurant. The only things slated to remain in Tomorrowland is the Monorail, Spacemountain, and the Disneyland Railroad Station when they remodel the land.

    Honestly, the Matterhorn scares me from a structural standpoint. It's been through 60+ years of earthquakes, including a six-pointer in '94 that collapsed freeway bridges and pancaked apartment buildings. I grew up seeing cracks in walls all over Orange County from that quake, and I can only imagine the damage the Matterhorn has taken, with a bone-rattling coaster running all day on top of whatever the quakes have done. Nobody remembers the movie it was based on anymore (yes, the Matterhorn is IP, and yes, the book was better). Find Harold the Yeti a new home before somebody else dies on that thing.

    For me, personally, the worst example of this is the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride in Florida. They drained it, let it sit empty for a few years, then filled the whole thing with dirt and paved it over and turned it into "The Little Mermaid Encounter." I also really miss the skycars in Florida. They took them out, too, but kept the terminals. (One of them is a video arcade now).

    For me, the real questions are “In 40 years, which rides are so quintessential Disney that they ABSOLUTELY NEED to exist in one form or another. Which need to exist in their legacy (original) form to retain their historical significance?” I’m curious, does Disney have a “legacy program” for the parks and their rides? Something that inducts rides or features of each park into something like a historical landmark that requires preservation? This is something I’d rally behind…

    When I think of dead rides I'd like to see returned, it's always Journey into Inner Space. I'm tempted by the potential of modern special effects, although the old school props were a big charm on the original. As long as it's an Omnimover and has that sweet giant microscope in the lobby I'd be happy.

      Yesssssss! The ride really wouldn’t change much, although with AntMan being under the Disney umbrella, it would likely get a strange narrative twist when we enter Quantum Foam… but yes… they have do the miniaturized riders effect with some sort of updated movement to make the mini-riders more realistic. For the giant eye, the could use an extreme closeup of a real eye on something like an 8K screen… the possibilities boggle

He told them the tracks are unrepairable and to bulldoze the entire land and rebuild what they want to keep. So they had thought of bringing them back and may be planning to relocate them if they were told the existing track wasn't worth keeping. The old Inoventions show building has the same footprint of Spacemountain so they could easily remove the track and rebuild it there with a upgraded show building after they figure out how to deal with the subs show building since it's over built like a bomb shelter so removal won't be a easy task.

What many people don’t understand is if you do proper maintenance (to anything) you’ll push back the end of life and the big cost of replacement. If they did maintenance like I remember when I was a kid things would last longer. And if they combined maintenance with updates they would spend less overall and give greater satisfaction to the guest. Okay off my soapbox. Thanks for the video.

    If they do rebuild the Matterhorn it'd be nice to preserve the original track layout as best they can, given the ride's landmark status as *the first* steel coaster using the tubular-rail techniques that would dominate the industry into the 21st century. (Steel coasters just seem to be starting to move beyond tubular rails today, thanks to computer-aided design and manufacturing. But for many years, they were what made twisty layouts with elements beyond the repertoire of traditional wooden coasters possible, and most roller coasters built today still have them.)

They should use it as a Tomorrow Land museum, something like the museum in Great Moments with Mr Lincoln on Main Street, and put pieces of old and abandoned rides and vehicles from over the years on display as a way for guests to see the changes in the park over the years while paying homage to those old attractions. Definitely a new track…but does that mean two tracks remain or will they completely rebuild the ride experience with one long brand new ride inside? The shell of the building is still great and iconic that could benefit from a more modern light package with LEDs. And, for that matter a brand new lighting and effects package inside as well.

    You are one of the most creative UA-camrs out there. Thanks for always giving us new angles on our favorite place. And yes, Matterhorn is a tough one for Disneyland. Besides the Castle, it is the signature visual for the Park. But would love to see them really go all out with the swiss theme actually. More Swiss themed restaurants around the base and throughout the ride. The Yeti is fine but I think they could make it a friendly Yeti. Perhaps add more of a Swiss mountain guide theme with an audio track, guided tour with partial dark ride. Like the Matterhorn deserts so expand on that with pretzels, and other foods to put you in the mood. Perhaps a raises beer garden with German food too. These things could be done now and not have to tear down the horn. The audio guided tour would be an easy add on as well as a new friendly Yeti. Perhaps even more sounds of a storm as you go around the mountain for added effect.

      Think they are just waiting on the city to make a decision on the Disneyland Forward project since they already said Tomorrowland is their next big project and if they don't get the green light on the expansion then we could seen some of those attractions moving into New Tomorrowland, Tomorrowland is already going to be shrinking to give Fantasyland more space while Matterhorn gets absorbed into Fantasyland all while guests aren't supposed to notice the land shrinking since it will be taken from the wasted space Autotopia and Subs currently use which is the majority of the land already. Monorail, Spacemountain and Disneyland Railroad Station are the only things remaining in New Tomorrowland so that opens a lot of space to build new attractions in the remodeling of the land. The current layout getting to and from the Railroad and Monorail needed to be redone anyway so merging the entrance path to both in a wider pathway could allow both to remain open during construction of new Tomorrowland since you could start with the ramp from Monorail going straight to the Train Station then have guests take the Monorail into the park, board the train to go to other parts of the park then take the train back to Tomorrowland to board the Monorail to leave as a alternate to the front gates. With new ToonTown opening next year which is more of a face lift than a remodeling which they could probably have done this year but want to wait till Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is ready before presenting.

    I bet Tarzan's Treehouse is being re-themed as Mama Odie's treehouse from The Princess and the Frog, to go along with Tiana's Place and the Splash Mountain re-theme.
    The Matterhorn just needs shocks under all of the bobsleds; making the them sort of float above their wheels.

    Yeah they could tear it down rebuild the skyway and the matterhorn, close down autotopia to put all the supplies, tear down the people mover, it'd be a huge step to getting tomorrowland and everything back on track. I really hate that Tokyo is able to do this and disneyland is just floundering.

    Honestly, I think that the bulk of Disneyland's Tomorrowland should be leveled. Space Mountain is great as-is and Star Tours is fine, but everything else is old, busted, and preventing a much-needed transformation. And I'm all for an updated People Mover, but it should be rebuilt from the ground up to fit the revised footprint of the new land. Matterhorn is a fan favorite, but it's also the source of many physical therapy sessions. I'd like to see it redesigned and rebuilt in conjunction with an updated Tomorrowland footprint.

    I just have to wonder if the whole "Matterhorn is painful" thing is more for taller folk? I've never felt like it hurt me to go on it. My wife and I went last year and rode it several times and never got sore or sick or anything.
    I'm not denying that it being painful is a thing, I've just never experienced it.
    Now Rockin Rollercoaster? That's a ride that is painful and really does need a lot of TLC (not to mention a retheme).

      Matterhorn needs work to get it to where everyone can ride it without being in pain. It's one of those fixes that can be a simple as changing the wheels on the bobsleds to ones that work better to smooth out the ride for riders.

    2006ish, WDW CMs were told that space mountain in magic kingdom was going to be redone. But the only way that disney would redo it, is to tear it down, rebuild it, and make it two seats side by side on the track. Then the recession hit and it’s become a thing of management saying they’ll only redo it when they can tear it down but they won’t because it’s so beloved that they can’t ruin people’s once in a lifetime vacations to MK by shutting it down. Basically the same excuse they’ve been giving for years as to why we can’t get the overlay for nightmare in haunted mansion

They made huge strides changing the vehicles after the late 90s. (2012--wow!) Soooo much better. Yes, sometimes parts of plaster do fall off, and it's down a lot. I think they need to rebuild as much of it as they can to make it as safe as they can. Our mountain is unique. I hate to hear about submarines going, but maybe I could see sacrificing it for the space to build a new mountain. Can't Elsa move to the Alps?

    Heart line. Something not fully understood at the time by anyone. Bob Gurr gave us the modern coaster.
    Legand.
    Option c- we move it and rebuild it.
    Move it as it's an achievement of mountainous scale which should be saved somehow and rebuild it- because it's dangerous as hell. I have no doubt some rich fan would be happy to put it on their property and would pay enough for it to rebuild a new one.

    An attraction can always be refurbished, if it’s falling apart is because it is not being maintained properly, not because of how old it is. • @WolfDShadow
      @WolfDShadow 2 роки тому +1

      The issue could also come down to what wheels they are using on the bobsleds, there are multiple cases of roller coasters having 1 type of wheel designed for a ride and then when the ride opens they find out environmental factors change how the ride vehicle moves along the track and the park has to change wheels until they find 1 that will work for them and Disney doesn't seem like they understand how that works anymore. It's just like the trams not being operational when the parks reopened they blamed rats and parts yet suppliers were making the parts already and other parks had theirs up and running throughout the entire pandemic while the parks were close shuttling around employees and workers so Disney could have been doing the same but in reality refused because they didn't understand the logic behind it just like their crowd control training makes crowds worst because the cast member is clueless of what crowd control even means let alone how to perform crowd control.

    Imagine removing Autopia and Finding Nemo for new “New Tomorrowland” attractions and recycljng Innovations by making it the front for a new dark ride/ creating a new walkthrough attraction that fits with the “New Tomorrowland” theming. And the challenge for Disney is to not use their IP’s. Imagine a glow-in-the-dark walkthrough where you learn about space and you walk through galaxy projections, etc. Or a dark ride/coaster that takes you through alternate earths to musical accompaniment! Think Fantasia but like a “Hagrid’s” type coaster.
    Edit: If any of these actually happen: I called it and demand credit DISNEY 🤣

    gut it and rebuild with new tech, while keeping the original theme in mind... but when I say new tech, I do not mean just screens or projections. If it's known to be a heavy animatronic ride, such as Pirates or Haunted Mansion, then I expect upgraded animatronics for it's new version. I would love to see Journey Into Imagination reimagined into what it was when it first opened but with updated technology. Get the full length of track back, and if they want to keep the Eric Idol Moon, that should be the only tribute to the current version allowed. Ok the butterfly in the cage can stay too.

    I’ll be real, last year, I went to Disneyland for the first time in probably 7 years, and the whole time, my whole group was hyping up the Matterhorn, especially since last time we went it was closed, and I’ll be real, it was my (second) least favorite part of the trip. I’m a taller/bigger guy, so I was essentially tucked in, unable to see and fully enjoy anything, cramped as hell, and all in all not having a great time. I do adore the theme, though, so a rebuild would be fantastic.
