  • Here are some basic drills from the grab and stab module that we built up in class, of course we all know there is no fool proof answer to this problem, but we start here as a foundational start point and build into non-compliance to see what comes out!

    Great stuff, we pressure test this stuff in our club too but have come to a slightly different conclusion. two of the members have been previously badly stabbed also, which whilst unfortunate; is also useful for our understanding. We drill as a first reaction to react to the “Grab, stab” to be…. a pivot and break away from the grab hand. The reason we do this is because it covers the whole range of other possible attacks too. Eg, the pivot and break away also works against the “grab, head butt” the “grab punch” as well as the “grab, stab” we feel it covers more bases and is more useful in that you may not know if you’re up against a knife as soon as you are grabbed? You don’t know what’s coming, so therefore it’s more useful as it covers more contingencies. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this if you are so inclined?

    IMO, the only bit I don't like is the option where you try and break the grip as the 2nd move. If that fails, you've not done anything, lost a beat, and you're back to being stabbed again. I prefer the right cross you showed as the next move, and/or pivoting away on the right foot and try for an arm bar - walking him around and down. If the punch had an effect, yes try and break the grip maybe. Generally though (not in this surprise attack), facing a knife, the left foot forward orthodox stance is a mistake imo. I think neutral stance or right foot forward is better because it's easier to get away from the knife to the off side. Orthodox is for fighting, we don't want to fight/exchange against the knife.

    When intercepting the stabbing arm does hitting with enough explosive force that it bounces back or pushing it away along a different trajectory than the one it came from ( ie to the side ) help prevent getting cut on the arm due to the knife being pulled back?

    If you think about it all the knife attack is is a punch over and over and over again boxing is the only thing that makes sense to counter a knife attack it's the only one that I can understand. Sophie break that down into bite-size bits what are the Target Acquisitions in boxing. There's behind the ear the jawline the back of the head with a hook punch the liver the kidneys ect. Some people like to use their legs and start to kick for distance. Knife attacks usually happen so fast you don't even know what's happening until it happens.

I always told my students that I can teach someone how to fight with a knife in 2 weeks and that person will slice someone to bit who has been training for 10 years to counter knife attacks. as you said, its claws against flesh. these kravmagay guys who do all these silly knife disarms and telling people that will work is such horseraddishit

    Remember if you don't have a knife elbows cut. =) everybody wants a system that's fluid that works. There isn't really one that exists you just got to kind of do what you can do to mitigate. Byron Rogers suggests faster than you kung fu. Matte teaches the shock zones with the blade so we can use that for counter ambush. Bas rutten nails that liver in the ring. People fall like dominoes. I've seen Paul Vunaks strategy with those crazy Wing Chun rolling punches. I've looked at some crazy IDF stuff (- +) grip closing distance after short circuiting (ooda loop) ankle or neck snap. I've seen some Wicked oblique kicks to the knee. The only thing that makes sense is gross motor skills I watched a boxer take on multiple assailants unarmed on a cct TV gas station film.
    I think that's the only thing that can work if you're unarmed against the blade. I'm not a fan of it but I know about it the Boxer Rebellion technically it was considered a lesser known World War against the Chinese but it shows the lethality of boxing. I found this quick video on countering the uppercut with a 90° cross it's so fast though. UA-cam short. Maybe this will work against a stabbing motion. The only realistic combat test that we have is the boxing ring. I wonder if we can give a professional boxer a chance to explore this dynamic perhaps like a white T-shirt and then you got the individual with the red marker and sparring gear how cool would it be to get Mike Tyson in on this. I still want to see what he can do with peek-a-boo boxing and a push dagger. ua-cam.com/users/shortsP8nGYVi624Q?si=_CpMpeyzUAWdMXsw thank you so much for everything you do everyday with uploads.

      yeah, id aggree.. u might need a quick reflex counterstance first, to frame or make space. but after that i am def throwing fast punches, as the "best knife counter". body mechanics can be so wierd and different in dif folks too, so i dont really wanna be in any kind of grappling sit, when the opponent has a knife.

    • @DrRepper
      @DrRepper 2 місяці тому +2

      The Boxers (as in The Boxer Rebellion) were only called boxers by English speakers because back then Chinese martial arts were called 'Chinese Boxing'. Had nothing to do with Queensberry Boxing.
      In reality, if you're unarmed and the guy with the shank is determined and reasonably strong you're probably fucked even if you're highly trained. While it's possible to block the first stab coming in if it's looped like they show in the drill, it's next to impossible to stop them pulling it back and having another go, and if they do it straight and rapidly they're going to get you 9 times out of 10.
      Basically, if you can't run away, make peace with whoever or whatever and fight like a you're a fucking tiger to get control of that weapon, because as long as that hand is free to stab you you've had it. You're going to get cut, you're going to end up in hospital, but if it's the last thing you fucking do get control of that fucking hand.
      If he's got friends with him you're dead, but that's another matter.
