I think the Gridin pick was totally unexpected by Sportsnet, but he was ranked at 21 (for NA skaters) by NHL Central Scouting. They should have had a better handle on who he was. He is a younger player (not 18 until March) but still led the USHL in scoring. Tons of offensive upside. I love it. This guy can score from literally anywhere. If he can translate his game to the NHL we are laughing.

That’s why we took him here and a lot of teams were off the board. And we only went off the board other teams went off the board in the top 10 look at Anaheim

Bob Mac had him ranked 37th, we don’t pick again until #41. The more I learn about this kid, the better I like him. Second highest point total in the USHL in the past decade, number one was none other than Matt Coronato. Great offensive instincts, creative with the puck, can make plays and has a decent shot. Went from 21 points in 40 games last season to 83 in 60 this season, including 38 goals. His English is terrific, and he is a character, I have a feeling we’re gonna get some money soundbites from this guy. If we land Justin Poirier tomorrow, I’m calling this draft a win. Chernyshov and Basha are still on the board. Anything else would be gravy 💪🏼🔥

Doubled his totals from the previous year, led the league in goals both regular season AND playoffs (51 and 18 respectively) and led in overall playoff scoring as well. RW was once a position of weakness for us, now we have Coronato and Gridin, plus Klapper and Schwindt who can play both C and RW. Poirier would be a filthy addition to that RW depth imho. It would be sick if here were still available at #62, but I’m worried he won’t be.

I'd have preferred we used the late 3rd (instead of the goalie) or the 4 rounder (Hoskin, seriously?) on him but alas he was scooped up by Carolina in the 5th! Happy with the goalie, and warming up to Battaglia, but trading down to 170 was a gamble unfortunately. Can’t win ‘em all, Conny still made out like gangbusters

@@TGriffiths-ve6nw Agreed. Coming straight out of college is definitely tough though. He did say it was a wake up call when he first arrived in the NHL. He was so used to being able to get to where he wanted mad just rip the puck so the game off the puck wasn't as important. His game definitely improved when he came back up. Hopefully him and pelts can find their game this season. It's going to be interesting. Gridin has some great skill and is IQ seems to quite solid from anything I saw so that's a start at least. Hopefully he works out.
