      @@mix0nix I didn't. I got one, and I learned specific songs, rather than chords, or even notes. Not the smartest thing. I gave up after a month. Also the guitar was old, used, and generally bad.

    So why is only the back sunburst but not the front? Also why didn't they cover the hole!?

    Very informative video. Thank you! Are all those products showed in video also available in non-aerosol?
    As an automotive painter I prefer to use a compressor and a paint gun since it will give more smooth paint application. You also would avoid the heavier paint spots as seen on video since with the paint gun has dual action trigger, air is supplied first and than the pain giving much smoother paint coat. Another advantage is to be able to adjust air pressure.

    Compliments!
    I should paint a 70's eko ranger 12-string acoustic which is already live.
    I eliminated all the very thick polyester paint because it was cracked and because I hope that without gaining a little more sound
    I would like to do sunburst.
    You advise me to do it with the black brown red amber background sequence like the acoustic gibson (I would do it with water or toxicity problems) or with the pad system you used (I think that being not an expert in using a spray allows me to make less mistakes).
    T Did I think about using shellac with various pigments added to get the shade or just alcohol mordants of various shades?
    For the final transparent stage?
    I wouldn't mind a buffered sunburst finish but with a wax finish similar to natural wood taylor to gain even more sound.
    Can the preparation be skipped by giving more coats and sanding or is there an easy way to do it?
    To avoid beard and blemishes 300 - 600 - 1000?
    Thanks Roberto

    Is this aerosol "Stringed Instrument Lacquer" the same grade as the Nitrocellulose lacquer Gibson uses in their USA factory?

    • @rmzzz76
      @rmzzz76 8 років тому +1

      +Dean H I contacted Gibson Montana about this. Not sure what the are doing with the electrics in Tennessee, but in Bozeman Montana they use a very light paste sealer on the wood which is dried and largely sanded off then it's all Nitro.... Big difference in tone to my ears for Poly finish vs Nitro finish. You can see how they do it in the factory in a youtube video titled 'Gibson Acoustic Guitar Factory part 7"

    Why do you do the black outer before the red starcast amber as the final? Does the sequence matter?

    • @rockler
      @rockler  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Guy, the sequence does matter. The step-by-step process demonstrated in the video is a rational and practical way to get good results with the least opportunity for failure (accidental goof-ups). With that said, there are often more ways than one to achieve good results with woodworking or finishing techniques. But if you are new to a technique, it is a good idea to follow an accepted process before experimenting with your own.

      @@rockler excellent yeah, was just thinking it might be easier for a beginner to just move from center out to avoid any freehand sprays - I'm in the middle of the process now, starting the burst sometime over the next week, hoping everything turns out alright haha

  • @SuperCarver2011
    @SuperCarver2011 9 років тому +5

    Using lacquer spray cans is a acquired skill. Finger pressure on the nozzle is very important. The ambient air temperature and the temperature of the can also makes a difference. You have to start the spray before it meets the wood and continue on in long strokes off the wood before stopping the spray while moving the spray pattern. If you hesitate, you will get a run that is difficult
    to cover up.

    • @voxac30withstrat
      @voxac30withstrat 8 років тому

      +SuperCarver2011 I thought the spraying should've always started and finished off the guitar. This is the same technique used when spraying a car. Still if your familiar with doing it this way then you go with what works for you I guess.

    • @danielflores3343
      @danielflores3343 8 років тому +1

      Yes. It is actually preferred, as it will waterproof your strings. Then, you can take it in the shower, where the acoustics are best for sound. That's actually how the professionals record. Follow the instructions and it will give you many years of waterproof playing enjoyment.
