I think about "what would Ryky do" each time I pull out my 40lb water stone bin and get to work. I purchased a rolled Buffalo hide strop from his store and love it. 😅

I don't know what you expected, but it's nice seeing you again, it's hard being limited when you're so used to being active, so I fully understand. I had surgery and was supposed to take it easy for a few months... I only lasted a month before going to normal routine (with some minor regret).
I wish you the best with your continued healing, and look forward to seeing your videos popping up more again

Yo it’s my man Ryky, I wonder what he’s… whuuuaaattt??
Bro. I broke my right index finger but didn’t require a cast. It took a YEAR before I could fully close my fist. And another 6 months to do it without pain. In between that time it took a lot of purposeful stretching and pain to force my tendons and muscles to go further. It’s been over two years and I feel I’m fully back to normal now. I wish you a speedy recovery. You’ve got this man. We will always be challenged, whether we’re ready or not. We have to decide how we’ll respond, because that’s all we can do. Don’t let the situation determine your attitude!

I speak from experience soft tissue damage is worse than bone damage. I am still dealing with range of motion on my dominant hand from metacarpal BOSS reduction surgery where they trimmed my tendons. I hope your recovery goes much better than mine I still haven't been able to work like I could before that was in 2016 I wasn't able to sharpen for more than 1/2hr-1hr until about when covid started. I did have to have a second surgery to fix the first surgery and 6 months of physical therapy in between and after. Also my grip strength still isn't as strong as my non-dominant hand when before surgery was waaay stronger

Try a comfrey poultice for the bone break and arnica for the bruising. Comfrey is/was known as knit bone and was used for broken bones before we got modern medicine. Helps cells to regenerate. Arnica is great for all muscle and tissue impact damages. Use fresh leaves for both if you can find them. Hope you get better soon!

DMSO could be interesting for your pinkie treatment. It is a very tiny molecule that can pass into our body very easily. It is a solvent that makes parts of the body that are not perfused available for the bodys healing processes. That means tendons, bones etc. so they heal much faster. It is also useful for sunburns, bruises and the like as it speeds up the healing tremendously. I use it a lot after Muay Thai... There is tons of papers regarding DMSO and a lot of info on youtube. It is very cheap (20€ per 1litre) and cannot be patented so it is not interesting for pharma companies. But you can order it online or get it from a pharmacy, anyways all the best to you from Germany!

Couple tips from a guy with a brittle bone disease.
It’s frustrating, annoying and super repetitive but actually keep up with PT, but not just at the hospital - but at home.
I’m not sure which country you’re in, but if you’re in the USA - you’re going to have to push for them to give you “homework” / home exercises, and specifically ask for flexibility / range of motion. At least in all of my experiences US PT’s mainly just focus on in office. But you’re going to be wanting to do home soft exercises twice a week at the start.
View it as working out. It’s really a daily thing, but also that rest is incredibly important.
It’s not just for short term comfort, but it’s for the future too.
Basically, if you don’t do these things, you’re motion will still improve enough that you may feel you don’t need to do PT, as it’ll quickly come back. But it won’t fully.
As you need to do it while your systems are still in “repair mode” and your muscles begin to bounce back.
Having parts of my body I didn’t focus on PT, it’s gotten worse with age too.
But the other issue is if you don’t, a few years from now then for the rest of your life - you’ll have pain in your hands.
Really make sure to get each muscle group in, strength training as well as flexibility.
This message is already quite long. I tried to keep it short, but good luck.

Hey Ryky, big fan of your content and have had great success finding special Japanese knives with your guidance.
I had some questions in regards to sharpening… my intentions have always been to do my own whetstone sharpening. However, the recent arrival of a newborn and my new life comes with some time restrictions…
Do you have any thoughts/recommendations on sharpening services or home sharpening tools that don’t take off too much from my knives?? I used to use an automated sharpener on my older knives, but I refuse to touch my recent purchases with it.
I could use some help on alternatives to self sharpening until I have more time to dedicate to the art!! Thank you in advance 🙏🏼

congrats on the new addition to the family. i've got a few viewers who have successfully launch knife sharpening business from their homes. just get your self a decent kit and a repair stone, like 120/140 atoma or other super coarse stone. 500/600 for REALLY dull knives. 800/1000 for a good edge, then something like a 5000/6000 polishing stone. you probably should get a strop, or just use newspaper you have laying around to really clean up the knives' edges after polishing. check out some stones and kits here burrfectionstore.com/collections/whetstones-sharpening-kits

Wing Chun dummy training after you get your cast off?!? WOW. That's not clever at all lol. However, I can see the need to rid those weeks of inactivity, just not like that!
I slipped in a cave (the Monty Python Holy Grail rabbit cave) and broke a finger when landing. It was a very fine break and didn't need casting, but the effects lasted nearly a year and still, that hand feels the effects of the cold more than the other hand.

I don't know the full extent of the injury because I never went to get an X-ray scan and it hurt like a mf, I couldn't do much with my right and took pretty long to get better so I feel you man. Fast forward to now it has been permanently bent, yes bent and I can feel that it's bent, it will hurt whenever I hold a pair of chopsticks for too long or claw grip a computer mouse.
