Besides making Japanese water stone content, when there really wasn’t any, Ryky has always been a regular down to earth good person. Definitely the main reason so many people love him. Get well soon.
I think about "what would Ryky do" each time I pull out my 40lb water stone bin and get to work. I purchased a rolled Buffalo hide strop from his store and love it. 😅
I don't know what you expected, but it's nice seeing you again, it's hard being limited when you're so used to being active, so I fully understand. I had surgery and was supposed to take it easy for a few months... I only lasted a month before going to normal routine (with some minor regret). I wish you the best with your continued healing, and look forward to seeing your videos popping up more again
Heal up soon! Love your videos and can't wait for more to come out. I'm glad that it wasn't any worse and you can still enjoy a passion of yours. Take care.
It's good you are getting back to it! Your videos about knives and sharpening them inspired many people to take better care about equipment they already use or to buy something quality and make sure it's looked after. Cheers mate, let's get that new video soon!
It’s good to see you post! I want to say your content is phenomenal, and I deeply appreciate the work you have done to educate people like me. I’ve successfully improved my kitchen because of you and you’ve answered dozens of my questions regarding stones, sharpening technique, and essential products. I’m praying a speedy recovery for you!
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I went through it after a shoulder surgery. Talk about a set back in my fitness career. My left shoulder atrophied do much and the nerve damage makes it so much harder to fire my left delts now. It’s a long road.
Glad to see that you are on the mend. Please try to look after yourself. We will still be here for your content once you are fully recovered and back fighting fit.
I broke my foot requiring surgery then 10 months later dislocated my shoulder. I’m really tired of PT. Hopefully you can recover quickly and regain full mobility.
Yo it’s my man Ryky, I wonder what he’s… whuuuaaattt?? Bro. I broke my right index finger but didn’t require a cast. It took a YEAR before I could fully close my fist. And another 6 months to do it without pain. In between that time it took a lot of purposeful stretching and pain to force my tendons and muscles to go further. It’s been over two years and I feel I’m fully back to normal now. I wish you a speedy recovery. You’ve got this man. We will always be challenged, whether we’re ready or not. We have to decide how we’ll respond, because that’s all we can do. Don’t let the situation determine your attitude!
I speak from experience soft tissue damage is worse than bone damage. I am still dealing with range of motion on my dominant hand from metacarpal BOSS reduction surgery where they trimmed my tendons. I hope your recovery goes much better than mine I still haven't been able to work like I could before that was in 2016 I wasn't able to sharpen for more than 1/2hr-1hr until about when covid started. I did have to have a second surgery to fix the first surgery and 6 months of physical therapy in between and after. Also my grip strength still isn't as strong as my non-dominant hand when before surgery was waaay stronger
Love this channel, your knowledge is fantastic and your passion for your craft is outstanding. I learned how to correctly use my whetstone by studying your technique.🔥🔥🔥🔪🙏
I had a similar break. I broke my little finger so bad I needed two rods in my finger while the bone healed, which lead to scare tissue that is still restricting the movement of my finger after almost a year later. It's not fun. Take care and heal well. Hopefully you will be back to normal soon.
Hey Ryky, joining the Yakuza is probably the most serious way to get access to the best Japanese knife makers😂😂. But seriously, praying for your continued healing and amazing contribution to the skilled knife users community.
The best thing to do now is to spend time with family. The best cure for any ailment mate. Yesterday was the last day of Ramadan so today is our special day. You will be in our prays,
I finally got my first whetstone (thanks to this channel and your old videos ofc) and Ryky posts a video :D coincidence? I think not! I hope you'll get well soon man!!!
When I broke my wrist my arm atrophied and my forearm was the width of my wrist pretty much up to the elbow. It took some time to get it back. You got this, make sure to listen to your PT.
Glad there is no permanent damage. Broke my hand. When it came out of cast, middle finger would not bend much, which affects the grip. Therapy with hot wax helped. Shoulder Shrugs at the gym really helped my finger and overall grip strength. I've learned a lot from your sharpening videos. Stay well.
Try a comfrey poultice for the bone break and arnica for the bruising. Comfrey is/was known as knit bone and was used for broken bones before we got modern medicine. Helps cells to regenerate. Arnica is great for all muscle and tissue impact damages. Use fresh leaves for both if you can find them. Hope you get better soon!
Dude I'm so sorry to hear this! Glad you're doing better! It's been 3 years since I shattered theend of my radious bone on my right arm and I still and won't ever be able to bend my wrist like I could and still can't sharpen knifes correctly on stones...
DMSO could be interesting for your pinkie treatment. It is a very tiny molecule that can pass into our body very easily. It is a solvent that makes parts of the body that are not perfused available for the bodys healing processes. That means tendons, bones etc. so they heal much faster. It is also useful for sunburns, bruises and the like as it speeds up the healing tremendously. I use it a lot after Muay Thai... There is tons of papers regarding DMSO and a lot of info on youtube. It is very cheap (20€ per 1litre) and cannot be patented so it is not interesting for pharma companies. But you can order it online or get it from a pharmacy, anyways all the best to you from Germany!
Get better. The urge to do things now that may not benefit your hand later are not worth it. Recovery, patience, you'll be back at it. When is irrelevant. Continue to awesome content and nice Parker Asahi board in the background.
1) lol you broke your proximal 5th phalanx. 2) Just because you got out of a cast doesn't mean you should punch hard wooden objects. 3) I'm a PT! I never thought of taping the fingers for a stretch, very cool. PS, I love your knife sharpening videos!
welps, i tried to name it properly. it's been over 10 years since my last anatomy lecture. i know, i know. i won't be punching dummies so soon after taking a cast off..... sorry..... thank for kind comment!
Didn't hear what the incident was that injured ya. I was attacked and my shoulder got broke, humoral head fracture. It's been over a year and healing has been slow and painful. Hope you recover well.
Couple tips from a guy with a brittle bone disease. It’s frustrating, annoying and super repetitive but actually keep up with PT, but not just at the hospital - but at home. I’m not sure which country you’re in, but if you’re in the USA - you’re going to have to push for them to give you “homework” / home exercises, and specifically ask for flexibility / range of motion. At least in all of my experiences US PT’s mainly just focus on in office. But you’re going to be wanting to do home soft exercises twice a week at the start. View it as working out. It’s really a daily thing, but also that rest is incredibly important. It’s not just for short term comfort, but it’s for the future too. Basically, if you don’t do these things, you’re motion will still improve enough that you may feel you don’t need to do PT, as it’ll quickly come back. But it won’t fully. As you need to do it while your systems are still in “repair mode” and your muscles begin to bounce back. Having parts of my body I didn’t focus on PT, it’s gotten worse with age too. But the other issue is if you don’t, a few years from now then for the rest of your life - you’ll have pain in your hands. Really make sure to get each muscle group in, strength training as well as flexibility. This message is already quite long. I tried to keep it short, but good luck.
Literally today I’m wondering what Ryky’s up to…. Oh new video yay! Oh a new injury, booooo…. Starving for some non-injury related content Ryky, you can do it! 😉😂
Hey Ryky, big fan of your content and have had great success finding special Japanese knives with your guidance. I had some questions in regards to sharpening… my intentions have always been to do my own whetstone sharpening. However, the recent arrival of a newborn and my new life comes with some time restrictions… Do you have any thoughts/recommendations on sharpening services or home sharpening tools that don’t take off too much from my knives?? I used to use an automated sharpener on my older knives, but I refuse to touch my recent purchases with it. I could use some help on alternatives to self sharpening until I have more time to dedicate to the art!! Thank you in advance 🙏🏼
congrats on the new addition to the family. i've got a few viewers who have successfully launch knife sharpening business from their homes. just get your self a decent kit and a repair stone, like 120/140 atoma or other super coarse stone. 500/600 for REALLY dull knives. 800/1000 for a good edge, then something like a 5000/6000 polishing stone. you probably should get a strop, or just use newspaper you have laying around to really clean up the knives' edges after polishing. check out some stones and kits here burrfectionstore.com/collections/whetstones-sharpening-kits send me an email burrfection@gmail.com and i'll be happy to answer any questions you may have to get you going
Wing Chun dummy training after you get your cast off?!? WOW. That's not clever at all lol. However, I can see the need to rid those weeks of inactivity, just not like that! I slipped in a cave (the Monty Python Holy Grail rabbit cave) and broke a finger when landing. It was a very fine break and didn't need casting, but the effects lasted nearly a year and still, that hand feels the effects of the cold more than the other hand. I can feel how bad this would feel for you considering your knife life so to speak. Hope you fully recover!
So at first I thought you lost your pinky and as soon as you pop off that finger braces and out comes your pinky I lost my shit 😂😂😂 hope you get a good speedy recovery
@5:05 I am well aware of how hard you push yourself after being immobile, say after a long hospital stay. But it has to be done while keeping yourself _in balance._ Get better and we'll see you soon.

I seriously injured the metacarpal under my right pinky about a good like 8 to 10 years ago due to a stupid mistake. I don't know the full extent of the injury because I never went to get an X-ray scan and it hurt like a mf, I couldn't do much with my right and took pretty long to get better so I feel you man. Fast forward to now it has been permanently bent, yes bent and I can feel that it's bent, it will hurt whenever I hold a pair of chopsticks for too long or claw grip a computer mouse.
