As much as you can dig a three-foot trench and drop two-inch PVC to insulate the existing water line to keep it from freezing.

The Dodge would carry more weight that the Chevy, the suspension is stiffer. Good move to use both totes though, makes filling the storage tank quicker. Rain catchment comes to mind...lol The goats sure love their treats! Love ya'll ❤️

Y’all may look into a couple of water storage tanks and use the rain water off your roof with gutters and pvc pipe and collect water that way and maybe it will save you time and labor with your spring system you are using. It’s just a suggestion from a old Texan.

I have a dehumidify that produced 4 to 5 gal. A day. And then I put that into my 125 gal tank and then pipe to to my burkey and free it for drinking and the rest for showers. Theirs is two of us and two cats and 3 /60lbs dogs also if its rains in have a roof gutter that sends water to my in let you the tanks

I’ve been learning composting past few years and I’m slowly getting better. I have 2 huge black bins one for kitchen waste the other for chicken but it’s too small for that so it’s also kitchen waste and I have 2 ground piles. One for fresh the other aged. I put soil on 🔝of what I add seems to speed up the fermentation without any bad orders yay 😁! I do a lot of mixing as well Been trying to make enough compost for my ground garden boxes Love composting ❤!! Really improves garden 🪴 productivity! Yay 🎉 show more videos of composting. Go for it! 😊

Regarding water, you should contact a local college or university and request to see a hydrology map of your area. A state agency will have one. It's preferable not to use surface water do to animals and other bacteria.

I spose 4 you ud want several avenues for your water problems why not have two hoses say in the winter one is empty so when one freezes you just use the other hose sounds crazy but hey you have a backm up plan and its simple unless you can bury the lines but thats not really an option in your area. or having several cisterns or small ponds u build to collect water. near your home n you cant have to many of them large water tanks you haul ur water with I think they are pretty cheap to rather then labor intesive pond building putting them in strategic places to catch runoff is also a good idea.

IBC totes come in 2 sizes that I know of. 275 and 330 gallons. A gallon of water weighs 8.3 lb. You are either hauling 2282.5 lbs or 2739 lbs with each load. Those trucks both look to me to be 3/4-ton capacity, that's 1500 lb. My stepdad had a 3/4-ton Dodge Power Wagon. He sent my mom to the sand and gravel place to pick up a ton and a half of mortar sand. It bent the axel. It also made noise like your Chevy. You need a way to unload full totes. Set it on the ground and let it gravity drain into your tank while you take an empty to fill up.

Compost, take some from the bottom of the first pile as an inoculant and make sure your compost piles are covered. Soggy compost becomes anaerobic, stinks and won't make decent soil amendments.
Greg, smart move with sawdust, blending it into chips will actually speed up the composting process. Same goes for anything you add, smaller pieces speeds the composting.
I'm on the "wet coast " where "red wigglers" or those called "Tiger worms" are native here.
I built a worm composter indoors (no it doesn't stink if I don't use any animal products, citrus, allium family scraps) and I get those beautiful worm castings. Cheap, 2 fairly large totes, one drilled for air, drainage, the other to catch the "worm juice". Sawdust works, some form of grit (worms need grit) and one lid with holes for air.
Katie can just put peelings, moldy vegs cut up fairly small into the bin, you get great non-toxic worm castings.
Comment about being "grossed out" phooey, worms in the kitchen likely would be far more gross to some.

When I lived in the continental states, I had my compost pile at the top of a gentle nole and kept water running over it... the juices from the compost followed a little ditchline I kept open with a garden trowel and planted my garden according to which plants could stand the strongest fertilizers. Pole beans and sugar peas, loved it as well as my cucumbers and squash plants... oh yes, zucchini grew so fast that unless you seen it, just no one is going to believe it. Lettuce and other small green type tasty treats.... spinach n beats.... I loved beats just for their greens. If it had a bulb, it was in this area to be grown to exciting sizes and speed. That ground until the compost, wouldn't keep a dandelion going... odd thing is, is dandelions do best in poor soil with their root system going down to reach fertilizer rich soil could be found and make the dandelion healthy. I used a poor analogy there. Well Greg and Katie, so happy when I see you post videos, worry about the negative nancys out there making it hard for the two of you to continue youtube. Your both highly respected and loved by this old man who only wishes his body could still handle this lifestyle.

Go for raised beds. Easy on the back. Deters some rodents. Look at designs for drip watering and underwater storage recirculation. Save water and time. Opportunities for water storage. Main issue is pine needles and floating debris. Water off the roofs - goat/chicken sheds, main house with downspouts, low rise roof in a cleared area, sloped for runoff to run to a sunk tank, through natural filter medium.

So long as it's well insulated and the water is moving then the constant influx of 'warm' (liquid) water should prevent it from freezing ... this may mean you'll need to 'waste' water by having an overflow (insulate this too as it's the most likely point to freeze - idealy the outlet should be underground in a soakaway)

Do a compromise on the garden beds, mill boards 12 inches high to form your beds, line the insides of the boards with roof membrane that will extend there longevity. Lower beds don’t dry out as much and don’t require as much watering. 1x12’s make great bed sides and you can mill them yourself. Send Greg to work and when he comes home you have milled and built your garden beds. Katie I’ve watched you work and am impressed with your talents. Think ahead, plan for the future, work smarter not harder. If a tractor can do the work use the mechanical advantage.

There is or was a UA-camr of grid og . In Indiana (?) He made a compost tankish septic tankish thing a 4x8 by 4 foot deep cyber lock tank with recycled windows on top angled for sunlight and a vent pipe (I'd extend higher 10 feet plus . It's all 100 feet plus from his home. He flushes a normal toilet the sewage is kinda cooked in the tank no washing machine. But in 7 years of flushing his toilet he had 4 inches in the bottom of the tank the rest evaporated away .
I'm thinking 3 4x4 tanks use one tank untill full and switch to another by the time the last tank is filled th first tank should be well cooked into compost soil

It would probably cost a lot less to run an above ground insulated/heat traced piping CW line to/from the creek. The frost line is probably pretty deep where you’re at so the trenching would be a pretty big undertaking, not to mention that you will probably be cutting through tons of roots and killing trees. I’d build a small pump house near the creek with a jet pump and a pressure tank, may need another booster pump install a media based sediment/separator in the pump house. Not sure how far you need to go or how much head you’ll need for the pump but I have a similar system on my property.

Great video as usual. In our area, we have a lot of ponds with PVC hookups for fire trucks. It's a hydrant of sorts but not pressurized. Instead, it simply replaces a longer suction line that would be needed to reach the pond without getting the firetruck stuck. I was curious if something like that could be set up where you get water from so you could leave your pump in the back of the truck and simply connect the suction hose from the pump to a quick disconnect on the PVC pipe which would then run down to the creek. Just a thought that could make life a bit easier.

I'm searching right now for my off grid retirement property.
As far as water goes existing well is a plus for me a good well on the property more than doubles the value to me . I likely will not pay to drill a well . When I was young I watched a guy spend $35,000 on a well that produced less than 2 gallons per minute. In Puget sound wa. I seen him do that 3-4 more times developing . One of the wells hit natural gas and that's not a good thing . Without infrastructure it's not usable and there wasn't enough to spend the shitload of $$$ .
I have no desire to gamble on wells.
Any land I get will have existing water or I'll haul it . Some area's like Arizona they can have water delivered to your home cheap a years supply of water can be cheap as city water.
