    For those asking about charging the Raspberry Pi and iPad while they are connected, I've been testing the Inateck 9-in-1 hub that has a full downstream USB-C port and works great for this use case: ua-cam.com/video/Au2Gtv-gQno/v-deo.html

      Have you thought of adding X11 server support on the Ipad?
      Then you could run graphical applications on the RPi but show them on your Ipad.
      Even running xdm on the ipad and configure the RPi to connect to that when connected. That is an original use case for X11. 😜

    This is frankly awesome info. I didn't realize that the newest Pi could enumerate as a USB Ethernet device over the power port, so that alone is cool. The idea about using that as an "accessory" for the iPad is both novel and supremely useful, if very nerdy and awkward. I can imagine implementing a whole bunch of prototype accessories with this WAY more easily than you might have otherwise. Want to build some kind of weird camera accessory? Do it on an RPI and write an app using a network interface. Etc etc. Very cool!

      @wallymoon8619 4 роки тому

      Is it possible to power the Pi via PoE hat & power the iPad via the Pi / PoE & have the iPad utilize the Pi’s wired Ethernet connectivity? That’s a lot of “ANDs”, but you could then potentially have a 102 meter long power cord and much faster Ethernet connectivity while charging the iPad rather than draining its battery.

    • @RedMageGaming
      @RedMageGaming 4 роки тому

      @@wallymoon8619 no, the pi4's circuitry isn't made for power delivery. Even with the POE hat, that all gets stepped down before it even reaches the Pi itself, the UBS C port on the pi accepts 5v at 3ish amps, it however doesn't have the ability to deliver power from that port.

    THIS IS WHAT I NEED😃
    I love the power and screen quality of ipad. Editing photos, even videos, it is just great. I am mad, that it is simply not possible to copy, drag and drop nine files (around 10 gigs) in the Files app. It leaves trashes, you dont’t know, what is happening or is anything happening at all, should you wait or do it one more time... A powerful and reliable device, that cannot copy files😫😣
    I was thinging about, maybe I buy a macbook air or windows laptop, with quality screen... overkill, lot of money... I have a great device, it feels nonsense... maybe some cheap, little computing device... maybe without a screen? To copy files, format drives...
    YOU SOLVED MY PROBLEM😌
    I will definately try this idea! THANK YOU!

    The one accessory that would make this an ultimate setup for me is a USB-C hub/charger that can go between the iPad and the Pi so that they can be taking power from the mains or a power bank - as far as I can tell from your video, if I'm running the Pi off the iPad, I'm using the internal battery of the iPad, and can't charge either of them.

    An excellent bit of lateral thinking - and it's great how you've essentially bolted Linux (Unix) onto to an iPad to do a lot of extra useful stuff. When I was watching, it made me realise how the newer USB-C standard enables you to draw more power and run the 2 drives etc on the Pi. I think the only (minimal) downside is the boot time for the Pi - mind you, I haven't got a Pi 4, so I am used to the slower, older versions!!!

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  4 роки тому

      I’ve been pretty surprised at how fast boot is.
      The iPad Pro can only deliver 7.5W so it won’t run the Pi at full power but I’ve not encountered many problems with that.
      Can always power the Pi externally of full power is really needed

I have to bring a laptop w/browser and connect to a tv at front of theater via hdmi. The only reason I can’t use my iPad for this yet is the fact that I can’t open local web folders. I wonder if this could help...using the Pi as the web server? And then maybe you could connect the monitor that displays the captions via the pi, as well? Not sure if that’s possible but how nice that would be! This video definitely made me think!

    • @tech_craft

      Is that remarkjs? If so I see no reason why that shouldn’t work at all. One of the things I do with the Pi is use Hugo which is a static site generator. I can edit it through a local editor on the iPad over a network share or using terminal editor directly on the Pi using SSH. Then Hugo runs on the Pi, serves up the site and I can access that from Safari on the iPad.

    I understand Rob says he has to have an iPad for what he has to do. I'm not questioning that at all.
    For viewers who are excited about his solution to his very specific use case, which may not be your’s…yes, it looks cool to have a Raspberry Pi doing stuff through iPad but please consider getting a used Mac Book Pro (or a Windows laptop and installing your favorite Linux on it) for a cheaper, powerful, and elegant solution to to do all that you're trying to do with the iPad Pro + Raspberry Pi combo. I understand MBP does not have touch screen but more than compensates with built-in keyboard and mouse. Also, a decent, used 13" MBP (2013 vintage, for example) can be had for around $400 (used Windows laptops are even cheaper) on craigslist in a big city near you. ✌🏾

Added to this, I have installed a DDNS service so I can access my Raspberry from anywhere where there is an internet connection. Pretty useful to tweak codes without sacrificing the mobility the iPad Pro provides.

    Also, while still not going to blow you away, the MicroSD interface on the 4 is a still good bit more performant than on previous Pi models.
    Also, I would recommend an aluminum heat-sink case as they can get quite warm. I use static heat-sink cases (ie, no fans) since I don't do anything *that* processor/GPU intensive with mine (and don't like moving parts when I can avoid them!), but the passive heat-sinking is definitely a good thing to have and will likely extend the life and improve the reliability of your Pi (make sure you get a case explicitly made for the Pi-4 too, cases for the prior models won't fit .... why they didn't call this board layout a 'model-C" to avoid confusion I don't know.) Enjoy your Pi.

    This is an amazing idea. I'd love to see something like remote VSCode running off the iPad and straight on the RPi. I faintly remember seing a tool that allows that through the browser - so you could just literally code on the Pi via Safari, move files through, well, Files and do some other neat stuff meanwhile. This is actually a stupidly clever idea. And if you wanted a desktop, I think you could use a VNC Viewer.
    But yknow what'd be overkill - and totally not possible? Collecting iPad + Magic Keyboard to the Pi as a thin client (using the iPad's screen for the Pi and sending keyboard strokes and mouse stuff to the Pi - without networking but via Video/USB through USB-C). That'd just be the top of the hill - but, using just the networking features is way beyond anything the iPad can do on its own.
    Have you tried this with a Pi Zero though? It should have OTG and Networking?

    I’ve found the best option of keeping the iPad Pro powered, was to use ‘USB-C Splitter, Dual USB C Audio Charge Adaptor Headphone’ - there are tons of those on Amazon. It’s meant for powering the iPad Pro, while adding a USB-C headphones or DAC, but if you put an Anker good USB-C -> USB-C cable on the Audio output, and connect the other end to the Pi4, you get a fully powered (even by portable battery) both iPad Pro and Pi, and since you know the IP, you can both SSH and VNC to it for whatever way you prefer working. The same setup works on all modern phones with OTG too (I got it working on Galaxy Note 9). To top it up, I also put the Logitech wireless USB adaptor in Pi4 USB 2 port, and had fully working keyboard and mouse too. The power was still good enough (I did use 18W output from a power pack - Omars Power Bank 20000mAh, orange output, but I’m sure you can do that in other ways too). Similar to using a USB Hub, but a lot more compact.

      I get the sentiment here but for me at least it’s not quite true for two reasons. Firstly, I need the drives and cables for my MacBook too - with no USB-A and Apple’s outrageous storage pricing, the MBA/MBP alone isn’t sufficient. Secondly, I am _always_ carrying my iPad. It has things I don’t really want to be without, specifically the pen and touch interfaces.
      Another commenter earlier mentioned how a 13” MBP with pen and touchscreen might remove the need for the iPad setup. I expect that would definitely get me a lot closer to where I want to be. And with Catalyst allowing iPad apps on the MacBook now, I can see some convergence in the future.

Although today I learned the Pi 4’s USB-C port isn’t a dumb power-only port, but my iPad is the 2nd generation iPad Pro which still has the Lightning port and not USB-C.
