The real problems that resulted in the Swans downfall to 3 wooden spoons in a row in the early to mid 1990s was that after Edelsten quit as the Chairman in late 1986, the real owners Powerplay took complete control of the Swans. But during the Swans incredible winning run in 1987, Powerplay lost millions of dollars through investing into a Satellite Sports Channel. Because of that the Swans were broke in early 1988 & eventually the VFL/AFL bought the Swans licence back. And of course the Swans lost players like Warwick Capper, John Ironmonger, Paul Hawke because of the Powerplay financial stuff up. Because the Swans got great players in the Edelsten recruiting drive, they basically didn't bring many of the young players through the team which eventually brought the Swans to near & bottom of the ladder. When the 1986 Edelsten recruits all eventually left the club, there were basically no replacements for them. There were some good young talent for the Swans in the early 1990s, but when most of the experienced players left, there was no guidance & player confidence suffered terribly, which was basically the reason why Sydney Swans lost 25 games in a row. The financial problems of the Swans in the late 80s & early 90s would have weighed terribly on the players which definitely affected their performances in playing well.
Yes exactly mate and he went out and bought the best players but when his money ran out the Swans went down with him and took years for the AFL and many others to prop the Swans back up financially....we could have quite easily ended up like Fitzroy
Edelstein was out of the picture the previous year after not paying the VFL what had been agreed to in 1985. At this point in history, the VFL owned and controlled the Swan's, before selling the club to Mike Willesse in 1988 which is when the downfall began.
Love Bobby Skilton's passion as a commentator.
Absolutely
Hawthorn also beat Essendon by 114 points that season
👍👍✅✅
How could we have done so well in the late 1980'sans then crumble to almost obvilon by 1993.🔴⚪😱
Yeh it was the private ownership thing that destroyed us hence why the AFL does not allow it anymore

...Up against a team that won back to back flags in 1984-85.😱
They didn't know it but Essendon had begun a rebuild and we had gone and bought a team through private ownership
This would have also been about the time that Dr Geoffrey Edelsten would have taken over the Ownership of the Swans.
