As the 2021-2022 season has come to an end, we look back over the precious moments of our wonderful family staring OGK, YRK and little Lilibet (our QT) 💕 We had a special season watching not only our Royal cam family but also seeing neighboring chicks and parents come into view! We say our farewells to beautiful Lilibet, who left to fulfill her destiny on September 3rd 2022 at 220 days old, the first chick to fledge this season. She received her official name Lilibet, which is a very fitting name for a Royal Albatross, named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. Lilibet, like all chicks on Taiaroa Head, hatched in an incubator to prevent deadly flystrike from occurring. Ranger Sharyn brings the newly hatched chick to YRK and they instantly bond. In the beginning, the rangers come by twice a day to weigh and check on the chicks and gradually reduce it to once a week. Check out the tiny white bag the rangers put her in - and then as she grows, she eventually graduates to a large white basket. Lilibet was quite adventuresome and left her nest early to explore and garden. She happily entertained herself & would do daily wing exercises getting stronger & more confident. However, Lilibet spilled her stomach oil contents after some overly curious and aggressive juveniles were picking on her. She then rubbed the oil on her downy feathers and mixed it with dirt from her gardening and became several different shades of brown - our cinnamon and vanilla swirl chick! Lilibet would whee with excitement at the sign of a parent coming in for a feeding and she became one of the best skycalling chicks - announcing YRK or OGK's arrival or even neighboring parents that would come in to feed their chicks. Lilibet was a social butterfly and she loved making friends with the neighboring chicks BT, TBT & PT. Fairy penguins (Little Blues) would make their way to her nest at night and grab nesting material and sing their loud songs. Henry the White Faced Heron stopped by several times to see Lilibet and do his snake neck dance for her. Rabbits would come out and play around Lilibet's nest almost nightly. In mid May, OGK went missing and we never saw him again. The albatross face many dangers at sea each time they leave to forage for food for their chick. We do not know the fate of OGK & may never know what happened to him. It will be a huge loss for the colony and for YRK to not have her mate and companion for 16 years suddenly gone. We do hold on to a slim hope that OGK can return back to the colony for the 2023 season. In OGK's absence, YRK worked hard pulling double duty to keep the feedings up for Lilibet. But raising one chick to fledge requires both parents full time, so the rangers gave Lilibet supplementary feedings & fluids until she fledged. Lilibet was banded with a black Darvic plastic band on her left leg with the numbers #22 and a stainless steel band on her right leg. This will help to identify her when she returns to the colony to start to find a mate in 5-8 years. Lilibet loved her wing exercises and was seen frequently winging along with neighbor chicks BT and TBT. She learned how to hover and would practice her lift, showing her paddles dangling in the air. Oh what a feeling of freedom it must have given her. But on September 3rd, 2022 in the midst of a storm, destiny knocked on her door and she unexpectedly answered that call. LIlibet caught raindrops before spreading her wings and up she went over the sea as we all watched her farewell and goodbye. I know I grabbed tissues after seeing her leave - it was hard to tell what was raindrops or our tears falling. She has taken a piece of our hearts with her and will hold it safely in her majestic wings until the day that she returns home. Safe travels Lilibet and fly free till we meet again. By now, she will be close to Chile South America if not already there. ♥ I would like to thank all the viewers for sharing in her journey this season. Oh how I miss OGK...such a good dad. I am in tears but mostly happy ones ❤ I loved watching this beautiful family. And seeing the other chicks was a nice way to end the season. Lady Hawk - Such a beautiful and emotional tribute to Lilibet (QT) and YRK+OGK. 1st song.- "Unchained Melody" started my tears. "Lonely Rivers Flow to the sea, I'll be coming home - wait for me" That applies to all 3. My heart aches for OGK and I still hope and pray he comes back - so loving + gentle as a mate+dad. When "Over the Rainbow" plays- OGK and QT are chatting - words of the song matches as each one responds with their beak movements. Then the "Diamond Girl" picture of QT with Dewey droplets of rain on her - gorgeous! The ending picture of OGK, YRK and QT - a tearful yet joyous memory! Thank you so very much for doing this. Another year and you've outdone yourself LH. This was a bittersweet season because of the absence of OGK. Having watched his devotion to his QT, I felt a terrible sense of loss and watching this tribute made me shed many tears! QT's amazing sky calls were his influence. Although YRK was a most wonderful Mom, she must have missed her devoted mate. Seeing the happy preening in the early days, while QT sat so sweetly is beautiful. Thank you for your lovely tribute to Lilibet (always QT to me ), OGK and YRK.

It really does seem like yesterday doesn’t it!! I remembered a lot of these moments like they were yesterday- like seeing QT with her “Ben Franklin look” as someone put it 😆, when she started to lose her down feathers lol, just to name one example. Thank you so much for this moving recap of the 2021-2022 Royalcam season, my third. Each season is like its own novel, with twists and turns that are unique. This season had many story lines. I hope to see Lilibet return in a few years. But, I pray for OGK and hope that he and YRK can be back together in 2023. Thank you again Lady Hawk for documenting our beloved birds.
Thanks for tribute to QT, her parents and the other albies. 💕💕 Sad to see her leave. Wish it wouldn't be 5-8 years before we see her again. It is amazing these young albatrosses find their way to Chile when they have never been there. What a long trip for them.

How fitting tumanako visited her after she had her spills, he too got picked on, I wonder if he remembered? She bounced back so quickly from all that, she was distrustful or timid for a small time after- but that didn’t last long at all and she seemed healed and ready to move forward! I think Tumanako did remember all those spills he had and what caused them so he was very gentle with QT. I am feeling about the same - the injection only helped slightly. And yeah I’ve rewatched it a few times now and definitely have caught some nuances and things that I didn’t the previous times I watched it, you did such an excellent job as always, thank you for working hard on this and making such a nice tribute to our Lilibet 🥰🥰🥰. And yes we will be rejoicing for sure! It’s amazing how we get to grow so attached to these birds while they grow, and then they leave and we eventually can get to see them again - it’ll be like an amazing time capsule for all of us each time we see a chick that we watched grow up, eventually come back 😊. I’m sure when it happens, we’ll remember all the things that were going on in our lives at the time we watched that particular albie grow up, and will remember for instance how they helped us through this thing or that thing. That sucks the injection didn’t help all that much ☹️. Yeah I hope you can find a way to manage it and feel better. 🙏. And yes, of course! - I know you are in pain and that’s not something that’s easy for me to forget. ☺️ and yes thank you I am doing well! Are there any videos that explain how the rangers determine the right time to remove the egg from the mother and put it into an incubator? I didn't know this was done because I didn't watch until QT was already hatched.
Hi Donnagelina yes the rangers will go to the nest daily to inspect the egg and listen to it and as soon as they see the eggshell cracking they will remove it and place in the incubator to hatch and will give the parents a dummy egg to incubate. Here is video of Ranger Colin removing the pipping egg from under OGK this season! Colin sprays the area around the nest with a safe insect repellent to prevent flystrike and then he puts a dummy egg back under OGK to incubate. Plus the video descriptions are always very informative; and then of course you can always ask if you have any questions as there are lots of people here who know their birds! OH MY God. Thank you so much Lady Hawk for the wonderful of this video of I say (MY) sweet Lilibet and her life. The music was absolutely wonderful and at the end when she finally fledged all the tears rushed out and left with so many emotional tears (sad and joy at the same time). I still miss her and her Mom and Dad so very much and I did not want them to leave but that is not the way it is in bird world. Her sky calls made me smile and miss her at the same time too. You have opened up a new world of understanding these unique beautiful and wonderful birds to me and I am forever grateful. I only wish these amazing albies know how much they mean to so many people in the world. With all the horrible things going on in the world it is so nice to see something so sweet and endearing. From the (getting to acquainted to the mating to the laying of the egg) to growing up and fledging. It just goes to darn fast. I look forwarding to seeing the new babies being born and growing up but no other birds will take my mind away from remembering and missing YRK and OGK and their beautiful Lilibet. Its ironic that the real Lilibet (Harry and Meghan's s daughter) lives up the 101 freeway in Santa Barbara (Montecieto) about 125 miles from God Bless and Thank you!

This tribute is so beautiful, highlighting some of the most special moments in our Princess Albie's life, which we've seen grow and develop since she came into the world inside the egg that was taken to the incubator and then brought back to the nest by the blessed hands of Sharyn Broni. 💕🥚🐣🐥🦢💕 Oh my precious friend, the interactions between our Princess Lilibet QT & OGK and YRK that we see here again in these wonderful highlights touched me deeply and I'm just crying like a crybaby. 😭😭 Do you remember when OGK arrived at the headland and waited for hours and hours over several days for his beloved YRK, until they finally met and had that wonderful egg they incubated taking turns earlier and earlier during the exchange of incubating duties?! 💕❤️🥚💗💕 And after Sharyn brought that fluffy little cotton ball back to the nest, they kept coming home earlier and earlier to feed and care for their precious baby girl. 💕❤️🐥💗💕 Watching Lilibet diligently garden and playfully nest, letting out her adorable melodious skycalls, exercising her wings and interacting amicably with their neighbors took me to OGK and YRK. 🎶🎵I confess that seeing it all together silenced me and at the moment I'm just a whirlwind of emotions. 💘 This was the first time I followed an entire season, watching all the videos and spending hours and hours in front of the live camera to see this sweetie that is my balm. 🐤👀🥰 I wish God would grant me the grace to see our Princess Albie come home, find a good mate (her Daddy) and have her chicks and perpetuate OGK and YRK's legacy of love and tenderness. As the 2021-2022 season has come to an end, we look back over the precious moments of our wonderful family staring OGK, YRK and little Lilibet (our QT) 💕 We had a special season watching not only our Royal cam family but also seeing neighboring chicks and parents come into view! We say our farewells to beautiful Lilibet, who left to fulfill her destiny on September 3rd 2022 at 220 days old, the first chick to fledge this season. She received her official name Lilibet, which is a very fitting name for a Royal Albatross, named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
Lilibet, like all chicks on Taiaroa Head, hatched in an incubator to prevent deadly flystrike from occurring. Ranger Sharyn brings the newly hatched chick to YRK and they instantly bond. In the beginning, the rangers come by twice a day to weigh and check on the chicks and gradually reduce it to once a week. Check out the tiny white bag the rangers put her in - and then as she grows, she eventually graduates to a large white basket.
Lilibet was quite adventuresome and left her nest early to explore and garden. She happily entertained herself & would do daily wing exercises getting stronger & more confident. However, Lilibet spilled her stomach oil contents after some overly curious and aggressive juveniles were picking on her. She then rubbed the oil on her downy feathers and mixed it with dirt from her gardening and became several different shades of brown - our cinnamon and vanilla swirl chick!
Lilibet would whee with excitement at the sign of a parent coming in for a feeding and she became one of the best skycalling chicks - announcing YRK or OGK's arrival or even neighboring parents that would come in to feed their chicks.
Lilibet was a social butterfly and she loved making friends with the neighboring chicks BT, TBT & PT. Fairy penguins (Little Blues) would make their way to her nest at night and grab nesting material and sing their loud songs. Henry the White Faced Heron stopped by several times to see Lilibet and do his snake neck dance for her. Rabbits would come out and play around Lilibet's nest almost nightly.
In mid May, OGK went missing and we never saw him again. The albatross face many dangers at sea each time they leave to forage for food for their chick. We do not know the fate of OGK & may never know what happened to him. It will be a huge loss for the colony and for YRK to not have her mate and companion for 16 years suddenly gone. We do hold on to a slim hope that OGK can return back to the colony for the 2023 season. In OGK's absence, YRK worked hard pulling double duty to keep the feedings up for Lilibet. But raising one chick to fledge requires both parents full time, so the rangers gave Lilibet supplementary feedings & fluids until she fledged.
Lilibet was banded with a black Darvic plastic band on her left leg with the numbers #22 and a stainless steel band on her right leg. This will help to identify her when she returns to the colony to start to find a mate in 5-8 years. Lilibet loved her wing exercises and was seen frequently winging along with neighbor chicks BT and TBT. She learned how to hover and would practice her lift, showing her paddles dangling in the air. Oh what a feeling of freedom it must have given her.
But on September 3rd, 2022 in the midst of a storm, destiny knocked on her door and she unexpectedly answered that call. LIlibet caught raindrops before spreading her wings and up she went over the sea as we all watched her farewell and goodbye. I know I grabbed tissues after seeing her leave - it was hard to tell what was raindrops or our tears falling. She has taken a piece of our hearts with her and will hold it safely in her majestic wings until the day that she returns home. Safe travels Lilibet and fly free till we meet again. By now, she will be close to Chile South America if not already there. ♥

Another year and you've outdone yourself LH. This was a bittersweet season because of the absence of OGK. Having watched his devotion to his QT, I felt a terrible sense of loss and watching this tribute made me shed many tears! QT's amazing sky calls were his influence. Although YRK was a most wonderful Mom, she must have missed her devoted mate. Seeing the happy preening in the early days, while QT sat so sweetly is beautiful. She bounced back so quickly from all that, she was distrustful or timid for a small time after- but that didn’t last long at all and she seemed healed and ready to move forward! She is tempered from stronger stuff than I! Takes me a while longer to heal from bad experiences 😄. Btw I hope you are feeling better LH.

Lilibet QT really had quite the season but she turned out to be such a beauty and so confident!! I know when she returns in 5 years or so we will all be rejoicing!! I think Tumanako did remember all those spills he had and what caused them so he was very gentle with QT. I am feeling about the same - the injection only helped slightly. And yeah I’ve rewatched it a few times now and definitely have caught some nuances and things that I didn’t the previous times I watched it, you did such an excellent job as always, thank you for working hard on this and making such a nice tribute to our Lilibet 🥰🥰🥰. And yes we will be rejoicing for sure! It’s amazing how we get to grow so attached to these birds while they grow, and then they leave and we eventually can get to see them again - it’ll be like an amazing time capsule for all of us each time we see a chick that we watched grow up, eventually come back 😊. I’m sure when it happens, we’ll remember all the things that were going on in our lives at the time we watched that particular albie grow up, and will remember for instance how they helped us through this thing or that thing.

Are there any videos that explain how the rangers determine the right time to remove the egg from the mother and put it into an incubator? I didn't know this was done because I didn't watch until QT was already hatched.
Hi Donnagelina yes the rangers will go to the nest daily to inspect the egg and listen to it and as soon as they see the eggshell cracking they will remove it and place in the incubator to hatch and will give the parents a dummy egg to incubate. Here is video of Ranger Colin removing the pipping egg from under OGK this season! Colin sprays the area around the nest with a safe insect repellent to prevent flystrike and then he puts a dummy egg back under OGK to incubate. OH MY God. Thank you so much Lady Hawk for the wonderful of this video of I say (MY) sweet Lilibet and her life. The music was absolutely wonderful and at the end when she finally fledged all the tears rushed out and left with so many emotional tears (sad and joy at the same time). I still miss her and her Mom and Dad so very much and I did not want them to leave but that is not the way it is in bird world. Her sky calls made me smile and miss her at the same time too. You have opened up a new world of understanding these unique beautiful and wonderful birds to me and I am forever grateful. I only wish these amazing albies know how much they mean to so many people in the world. With all the horrible things going on in the world it is so nice to see something so sweet and endearing. From the (getting to acquainted to the mating to the laying of the egg) to growing up and fledging. It just goes to darn fast. I look forwarding to seeing the new babies being born and growing up but no other birds will take my mind away from remembering and missing YRK and OGK and their beautiful Lilibet. Its ironic that
the real Lilibet (Harry and Meghan's s daughter) lives up the 101 freeway in Santa Barbara (Montecieto) about 125 miles from God Bless and Thank you!

This tribute is so beautiful, highlighting some of the most special moments in our Princess Albie's life, which we've seen grow and develop since she came into the world inside the egg that was taken to the incubator and then brought back to the nest by the blessed hands of Sharyn Broni. 💕🥚🐣🐥🦢💕 Oh my precious friend, the interactions between our Princess Lilibet QT & OGK and YRK that we see here again in these wonderful highlights touched me deeply and I'm just crying like a crybaby. 😭😭 Do you remember when OGK arrived at the headland and waited for hours and hours over several days for his beloved YRK, until they finally met and had that wonderful egg they incubated taking turns earlier and earlier during the exchange of incubating duties?! 💕❤️🥚💗💕 And after Sharyn brought that fluffy little cotton ball back to the nest, they kept coming home earlier and earlier to feed and care for their precious baby girl. 💕❤️🐥💗💕 Watching Lilibet diligently garden and playfully nest, letting out her adorable melodious skycalls, exercising her wings and interacting amicably with their neighbors took me to OGK and YRK. 🎶🎵I confess that seeing it all together silenced me and at the moment I'm just a whirlwind of emotions. 💘 This was the first time I followed an entire season, watching all the videos and spending hours and hours in front of the live camera to see this sweetie that is my balm. 🐤👀🥰 I wish God would grant me the grace to see our Princess Albie come home, find a good mate (her Daddy) and have her chicks and perpetuate OGK and YRK's legacy of love and tenderness.
