The gameplay music in this game has stuck with me for 30 years now. Holy shit, I remember that song yet to this day. I've been trying desperately to find which game it was from, as I only remembered it was a "street fighting" game like Final Fight, and on the C64 but nothing more. I only remembered something like "Revenge" or something. Finally found it ^^
I really loved this game. I thought it had 16bits graphics...it just looked awsome and played so smooth.. But then I saw Rocket Ranger on the Amiga and I forgot all about it...ahh..childhood memories.. 😜😜
+xkraelx Yes it is one of the most awesome tunes, and it is called Ocean Loader 4. And I think it is used all the Ocean published games when the number 4 songs in turn. Other loader tunes are also awesome.
mine used to hang when I used the phone I think - I was then told it was supposed to run from c64 disc station and that was why it hanged, and I had it loaded from the tape. Those were late 80s.
@@Simon0 Spectrum 128k version was the best. The Amstrad was pretty good graphically but over all the Speccy takes the crown. It's a shame the C64 version was coded by idiots as I'm convinced it is capable of much more than this. The animation is dreadful and they look like they are walking on ice it's almost a bit like MJ Moonwalking. Maybe they should have sold more Commodore 128's by dropping its price I think the C64 only had 32K of usable RAM as it was swallowed up by the OS so it probably had less memory available than a Spectrum 48K
Hmmm...it's one of those C64 games where the sprites are done so in this case...the black hires outline sprites are overlayed and animated along the multicoloured parts.
What a crappy elevator system. It only takes you down one floor? Then you have to walk all the way to the other end to get to another elevator. Don't park in this building.

How do I start this Target Renegade game?
the controls feel harder on the c64 version. I struggled just to fight the bikes...The amstrad and spectrum have better gameplay.Apparently the coder for c64 was different
I had this awesome game on amstrad but have to admit c64 looks way better minus no fighting sound effects. Why did c64 produce better looking games in terms of graphics? Was it a more powerful machine?
It had hardware sprites and scrolling, which gave it the edge against the Spectrum and Amstrad CPC. Although, if you look at Pinabll Dreams conversion and up-and-coming Vespertino racer by Batman Group, it might prove that the Amstrad is the most capable of the three 🙂
The Amstrad is actually kind of half a generation ahead of the C64 and Speccy. However, the Speccy was the biggest machine in the UK and the C64 was the biggest in the US, so developers tended to put more time into those. Before the NES, the C64 was where the big money was. The 1982 Spectrum really is the most basic hardware possible and shouldn't really stand a chance next to expensive computers like the CPC and C64. Thing is, there's several design decisions which turned out to be genius. It's fast - enough to run a really playable version of Carrier Command. Or Chase HQ, or R Type. The famous problem, and what is actually the secret power, is that you can only do 2 colours per character space out of 15 on screen. The blank canvas the Speccy offered meant it went far and away further than anyone intended. The 1982 C64 actually only has 4 colours per character space in lo res mode and 2 in (a bit higher than) 'Spectrum' hi res mode, plus 3 per sprite out of 16 on screen, Renegade 1 gives an indication of what 'normal' C64 graphics are like. Notice how much smoother they are because it's being done by hardware - both the sprites and the scrolling. Thing is, people found ways to cheat - Target Renegade uses Renegade-style lo res 3 colour graphics with 'Spectrum style' 2 colour hi res graphics sitting on top by using multiple sprites at once. It means it plays like crap and you can't get many enemies on screen but it almost looks like an Atari ST game. Plus the C64 has the best synth sound out of, well, anything! The 1984 CPC has three colour modes - lo res with full 16 colours, mid 'Spectrum' res with 4 colours in total on screen and a proper 80 column 2 colour high res mode all out of a total of 27 really well rendered colours (unlike the ahem, C64 palette). On paper, this is quite a bit better than the other two machines, graphically more like a PC of the time, really. It has a 4Mhz CPU (compared with the Spectrum's 3.5 and the C64's 1 Mhz - see how important that extra hardware is!) but often came out the slowest because of heavy graphics and no sprites or scrolling in hardware, plus because of the similarity with the Spectrum you'd often get direct ports to the 4 colour mode - those games would actually have less colour than the Spectrum version and be quite a bit slower. Not entirely fair, of course. You'd have to compare a game that's been developed by someone who can really push the hardware. There's a 'new' version of R-Type that is quite rightly the best out of all three machine's versions. I believe someone is doing a proper job of New Zealand Story - the original is terribly slow and jerky as is the Spectrum version. It'll be interesting to see if it is better than the already excellent C64 version.
Punch and go, ridiculously easy compared to the Amstrad and Spectrum version, the soundtrack is also inferior, lacking the nostalgic theme in the park stage, which is moved to the ending but shortened
+alex ojideagu Well, it';s the same theme from the second stage in the other versions, but a bit more strident, and it also suffers by having no sound from the fights. Overall, the immersion and atmosphere are better in the Z80 machines to my taste. ;And I said inferior, not bad by any meassure. Gameplay-wise I find this version poor, take level 4 and beyond. In Amstrad and Spectrum you can't just punch them as they come, as they are stronger than you, and if you try to fly kick them, they duck it, so you have to outmanouver them quickly before they gang up on you (no 2 enemies per screen limitation there) Hard but doable, which makes for a great challenge overall. The C64 is missing all that, including some very funny friendly fire in stage 2.
+Don Facóquero : absolutely right. I have the game on my c64, it's total garbage compared to the CPC version. And those oldish graphics...OMG! Only the music save the day for this version. Some people should try the CPC version really, it's all smooth, with good AI, and also good music for what it can achieve.
For sure i do i own a lot of old school machines. CPC and c64 included. Target Renegade c64 is awful compared to the CPC version. The CPC version is more colorful than that, smooth, with a great playability as well as a very good soundtrack :)
@Rooflesoft Games C64 is almost always all music and fuck all else. The Amstrad was all show and no go and the Spectrum 128k version is the dogs nuts it just works like a dream

Knowing the music but not the game is like having an itch you couldn't quite scratch - glad you found it :)
Indeed! It's been really bothering me. Thanks for uploading this!
Instantly memorable music especially the title screen! I'll never forget these tunes!!
This was so much better than the sad Double Dragon port we got on the C-64.
Yeah I remember being so disappointed with Double Dragon on C64...not even close to the arcade..lol
Another awesome intro music from another 80s game.
NOSTALGIA
Hands down one of my favorite games on the C64! Still love the music by Gary Biasillo.
Good example of how the 1981 VIC-II chip can replicate the 1985 NES sprites easily with the right people on the case.
Nes is 1983 made (Famicom) and c64 cant replicate it,NES has true PCM channel built in (5 channels total)
@@vasileios6301 VIC II was the graphic chip. The SID was for music. He was referring to graphics capabilities, not sound.
Target Renegade was my favourite of the 3 Renegade games

Interesting note is the song which is being used in Batman the Movie during the loading of the game :) Possibly the best tune of the c64.

War ein sehr gutes Spiel und ich würde es heute noch spielen.
Another game that was great on all 8 bit platforms.
c64 wasnt that great actually. I looked it up and the NES version looks a lot better. Renegade though on C64 was quite good (not target renegade).

Did a different programmer make this C64 version from the Amstrad and Spectrum versions, looks to have a completely different art design!
The C64 coder was sniffing glue I think
6:40 lol. Beat those bullies to the beat.
that moment when the c64 ran games at a much better framerate that the current so called games machines made by sony and ms lol

The lifts do go all the way down. Renegade just wanted to make sure he cleared every floor of bad guys.
I love this game.
