- Zeus presents Target Renegade 128k (aka Renegade II) (un-emulated) for the zx spectrum, a true classic from the golden era of spectrum gaming which must not be forgotten alongside the software house and all programmers that were involved in making this game.
Year of release: 1988
What a game! What a sequel!
Here we have the 128k version of this cool game.
This was such a big deal when this came out, everyone wanted to play this game, it really kicked all home versions of Double Dragon.
Easily the best 8-bit version in my eyes (except for the fantastic C64 music), the characters look cool, nice 128k music, the graphics look very detailed and it's so playable,...fantastic game.

Please note: NONE of my game uploads are emulated in any way whatsoever, they are 100% original recordings by myself taken directly from the original hardware the game was intended for, that way you know you're watching the real thing.

Cool Target Renegade shades, ZX Spectrum style!
This is still a masterpiece of gameplay and music. Im here for the music after all these years.
I'm not gonna lie, the music in this game sounds like auditory torture. It's just so high pitched it hurts my ears. The spectrum had much better music in other games, i.e. LED Storm, Robocop, Outrun.
Level 1 music is beautifully haunting. I used to play this and just listen to the music..the memories are ridiculous.
Easily one of my fav games, stay tuned as I will be uploading a "let's play" of this with commentary :-)
+Karl Taylor Ditto - the music was fantastic. I remember it occasionally went wrong and the notes started hanging, it was like experimental ambient chiptune music.
The odd thing is that I remember the happy pop tune from level four (the shopfronts) appearing in level three (the park). In this playthrough the park music is the same as level one. I had a budget re-release, so perhaps they tampered with it.
Are you sure that wasn't the Amstrad version as that had much of It's music out of tune in places and the odd note playing at the wrong time wheras the speccy version (the KING version) always sounds perfect.

I came here just to hear the music.
Speccy it never mattered howmuch colours it had, music and playability was top notch. Deadliest in the game Mr Big and the gun man that flits on and off the screen until he has no ammo.
Just showed how great speccy games could be when programmed with the limitations in mind

Yep, this and the prequel easily the best 8-bit versions, so playable and yeah the 2 player co-op mode on target made this game sooooo much better than Double Dragon,...shame the franchise eneded with Renegade III...yuk.
Alexander Humphrey 2 player mode ruined my life for a good while , first major obsession that effected sleep and schooling. lmao
Amazing seeing this game again. I recently bought my mother’s house. Which is the house I grew up in, so I keep having all sorts of flashbacks. One of them being playing this game. Wasn’t a fan of part 1 or 3... but this was phenomenal

The portable TV in my room was b/w and I was only ever allowed hook my speccy up to the colour tv at Christmas time. This, and 2 player Ikari warriors were my all time favourites 👍✌️
I had more fun on my spectrum then on my ps5 by a million miles......level 1 MUSIC is heaven to my ears.... haunting and fitting to the times ...ahhh the originality forever missed!
Yep I pretty much gave up when PS3 came out, nothing but mostly soldier fps games,...just not for me, give me Chuckie Egg and Target Renegade all day!
Me and my friend played this a lot on his plus 2. I always preferred playing on the keyboard. Hands down the best 2 player experience on the ZX by far. The music on the mall level is brilliant. Pure nostalgia ❤

Literally my childhood and this was the first game that I EVER beat all the way through. After I killed Mr Big I ran downstairs and told my parents like it was the most amazing achievement ever 🤣

absolutely best game, it even had a co-op option so u could play with a friend on a single screen, and that was a gaming heaven. This is mortal kombat and golden axe combined with nick slaughter - absolutely classic
Yeah 2-player was such a laugh, sadly the 2 guys who used to play it with me i haven't seen for around 15yrs and the mates i have now ain't got a clue how to play this properly using the keyboard, otherwise i would've uploaded 2-player co-op mode.

Thought you were going to say your mate got shook to death by a giant scouser, LOL. This was the best game ever made at the time (1988). My high score is 315400 - killed by end boss on 2nd meeting.

I only ever played this at my cousins house.. he only had a 48k.. never heard the music.. that's awesome.
I am using a 128k+1 with a scart lead connected from it (rgb socket, sound taken from the mic socket which connects to the scart lead) to the back of my sony dvd / hdd recorder, i then record what i am playing on the hdd, edit it, then burn it to dvd, convert it to a file that youtube accepts then finally upload it.
It may sound a lot of work but it's actually quite easy and of course...unemulated.

Who else remembers the cheat where you just type a load of rubbish into the high score board, and then you go back into the game with infinite lives :) :)

Yeah! The number of characters was unlimited, and when i typed some garbage in it, the screen goes bright, and you´re god mod! hehe. Nice memories!
After playing and losing all your lives, you will be at the top of the high-score table, hold shift + 0 or delete so the top row fills with zeros and goes on to the next line until no more 0s will fit. Press enter and you will have infinite lives and energy when you next play :)
As long as you filled at least one or two lines with characters in the high score screen, it would give you infinite lives. I seem to remember we used to just tap in anything. It didn't seem to matter what you typed.

This is one game I WILL play these days .. and there are many others that have stood the test of time HEad over Heels is another and Batman 3D I can't be the only one that was sidetracked by girls and other stuff back in the day and only played these games half heartedly instead of going for completion ...

Tip: Q, A, O, P - agreed, but never use space bar as fire (too unresponsive), use the up cursor ^ to the right of it. ;)
That guy with the gun on level 2 took all your health if shot.
He's very useful taking his own girls out if you line up with his bullets :-)

Wasn't a bad game at all, pretty cool, but still think the first Renegade 128 version was the best out the series.
Just finished repairing and modding a +2 - Lot's of outputs / inputs so that I can load converted TZX files and save my old tapes :) Repaired the damaged case and bolted the keyboard back into place too :)

Fucking good game pitty double dragon and the sequels wernt as good. Those other black and white graphics games had no excuses for the spectrum judging by this brilliantly made game well done Imagine. Not just a great song by John Lennon!
No doubt if you had a spectrum you must have this game along with Renegade otherwise there's something wrong with you.

The ending is disappointing compared with the C64 version.
The way the graphics were done meant they quickly ran out of sprites so 2 player was never an option sadly. The high res overlays ate up so many sprites unfortunately.

The quintessential version mate, brilliant game especially in 2 player mode, the 128k version is best.

Maybe It's that way because It's all about his brother being murdered after the first game and this is a sad dangerous story and mission that his brother must embark on.
I had this game on both the spectrum +2 and commodore 64 and the spectrum version is much better.
Spectrum version best of the best, C64 version stunning soundtrack.

I would grind this game for hours. Good game for it's time.
The less powerful machine, with the worse color handling, and yet still the best game version, even against the much newer NES.

I own 2x 128k+1 toastracks, they are the best and load 99% of all games weather It's 48k or 128k games :-)

I assume you mean the +2?! For me It's always the toastrack as you can plug any external tape deck / cd player / MD player or any MP3 player into them to load games as long as you use jack plugs.
The tape decks on the +2 are not reliable.

Yep it was a terrible moment, I always play Target Renegade+ (new levels) after this, different backgrounds and higher difficulty,...the true Renegade III imo, It's on my channel.

Well it's a damn sight better than the cpc version lol, that version is an ugly joke.
The C64 version had an incredible soundtrack on this game.
