  • I left the last stop early due to treat running out, had about extra 15 min so I visited the 2nd stop looking for #1 avocado fan Squirrel due to no show and too many recent brief encounters. Resting on a branch, she immediately came down from the nut scent & grabbed a unshelled peanut but went back up, Video started when she was done, I decided not to hand her the avocado in hope that she would stay and she did!! And we would spend the next 10+ min with her going into an eating trance and me standing right next to her matching that energy & rekindling the bond we had since almost 4 years ago. Two couples w/leashed dog went by but left us in silence without commenting, if not, which would have killed the moment and spooked her right back up to the branch. I left 2 min after alarm went off, almost didn’t want to but I had a job nearby and refilled un/shelled peanuts and came back to the park afterwards to spend an hour before the next job. During that “stolen hour”, I just focused to connect with whichever Squirrel came near, the duck couple was still there from 2 hours ago. I gave them so much peanuts, oats & seed kernels that the duck wife got so filled up and left first! The small birds were also happy to dig in. Pierced (R) Ear Squirrel came by and stayed more than an arm’s away for a while cracking & eating unshelled peanuts before caching spree. There was no walnut or any pecans left. I thought about staying longer but didn’t, went to the 2nd job and went home after 8PM. What a difference in #1 Avocado Fan Squirrel’s attitude when there was no competition around. How lucky I left with few un/shelled peanuts just enough for her & some almonds for later! And what a difference in mindset when supply was abundant! And after this day, #1 avocado fan Squirrel would stay close by at the breakfast club if no other Squirrels near her instead of running up to the top of the tree staying out of sight which meant this bonding moment really worked!!

Beautiful story and am very happy for you. Having seen her for 4 years strong is quite special. I found a dead squirrel on our lawn next to the road. It appeared to be hit by an automobile. It was a beautiful female Eastern Gray Squirrel with a blonde/orange tail. She had been coming around for two years and I was able to hand feed her many times, the last being this past Saturday, 5/11/24. She was a Mama Squirrel that had littles last summer of 2023 and this winter, 2024. It is very hard to talk about and I feel like the breath is taken from my lungs and heart broken. I buried her this evening in the back yard (placed her on top of some bubble wrap inside a box, covered her with some fresh purple colored Japanese Wisteria Flowers, then tissue paper and more wisteria flowers). I then place in in the hole I dug, covered her in the box with soil and placed my wisteria flowers over her grave and scattered peanuts over the area for her family and friends to come by to pay their last respects and have a feast. I then thanked her for everything, making me happy and warming my heart every time I seen her and bonded with her during feeding sessions, following by saying a prayer and telling her "I will see her in heaven".
This was hard to write through many tears, but I feel like it gives me some peace and closure as I share my story with you. At least her spring babies are juveniles now and leaving the nest and will have me to count on to help them with food and shelter with the nest boxes if needed. I hope things have been better for you on the squirrel front. It is hard to bury a furry friend 😘🐿❤🥰🙏

Thank you for sharing this and I knew how hard it must have been, but felt relief that her babies were weaned and on their own. Sometimes, the funeral, burial, eurollgy, wakes are more for the living. I, too had to put one in a bag at the park, saving that to be out on this memorial day. Just past Sat, #1 Avocado Fan 🐿️ stayed on center stage and allowed me to groom her just like old times since 10+ months ago. Having her show up each time I am there is already a blessing. BTW, I am mailing out the little thing I made, well, not by original plan b/c after finding the material, one was damaged so I kinda improvised today. I will only get free 6 GB of data service starting June so I will stay away from the site even on days off and rely on free public wifi. Thank you!!! Again LMK when the envelope arrives. If you believe in heaven then why be so sad when someone passed reaches there? I am looking forward to seeing mama Squirrel there!!! :)
