This video was shot in San Francisco Botanical Garden by chance. In fact I went there for a walk an to take pictures of flowers. I was a bit disappointed due to heavy overcast that day. I think was close to lunch time. Perhaps, squirrel lunch time, since there were quite a bunch of squirrels all over the trails : ) Some were eating wild apples, others were begging for food and so on. However, few squirrels were on a different diet, as the "special ones" were eating magnolia petals.

I used to have an ornamental pear tree next to my house and every year once the pears fell off and fermented on the ground hundreds upon hundreds of birds would show up and chill in the tree and eat the fermented pears on the ground and get completely trashed stumbling on the ground and making an unbelievable amount of noise.

Used to have a family of five greys come into our garden in Roborough, suburb of Plymouth, UK - one of them even used to bang on the back door when he wanted us to throw him nuts ! Then we got our shaggy sheepdog Barney... squirrel was not happy at all - used to sit on a branch just above dear old Barney's head, flapping his tail and hissing at him. Presumably negotiating a boundary issue ! Barney would never have hurt him - he used to kiss kittens and rabbits - but of course he was curious !

Wow, considering how excellent squirrel balance is, this case of the spins boggles the mind. Hope she found somewhere safe to sleep it off -- on the ground and away from sober predators.

The funniest part about that for me as Russian is that in Russian, delirium tremens is informally called “belochka” (similar to the word “belka”, which is squirrel in Russian).

I just discovered this video; very amusing. I think it was the fermented fruit he was eating at the very beginning of the video. The magnolia petals are newly fallen. Once saw a squirrel drunk on some kind of fruit, spinning like a top!
The fruit looked like crabapples, which can become extremely fermented.

Ahh, this brings back so many good memories from back when I too used to eat stuff from the ground.
I had a Love Bird back in the 1970's. My mother let it drink wine out of her glass once. After just a few drinks it was drunk. After that, it wouldn't let my mom have a glass of wine without trying to get into her glass. If it was locked in the cage when mom got the wine out it would pitch a fit until it got a drink. No joke, that bird liked to get drunk.
Luckily mom only drank once or twice a month so it's not like the bird was drinking every day but yea, it knew where the wine was kept, it knew what a wine glass looked like and nobody could have a glass without sharing. It didn't seem to hurt him, he lived 13 years which is about average, maybe the long side of average.

Elephants and monkeys are known to frequent fruit groves when they know that the fruit has fermented. It's not accidental, it's documented as a phenomenon. They have a great old time but I wonder about next mornings :)
Yep the Marula fruit, also used to make the world renowned Marula fruit cream liqueur which is soooo nice, especially at Xmas!
We used to get deer ànd pigs in the orchard in late fall eating the dropped fruit. 😅 the pigs especially were hilarious..
Oh priceless... the drive to get wrecked and not know when you have reached your limited must be in our animal genes. The thought of such an agile animal trying to jump from branch to branch now with severely impaired judgement... and no one spiked its drink, it’s all self inflicted. You wait until it gets back to the drey and finds its spouse waiting....💙☮️
