Perspective: It's not allowing them to "free up'' Doctors time to allocate for other appointments. It's allowing the further decimation of the NHS by the removal of access to a GP and making it look like it's being done for the purpose of convenience. For the last three years access to a GB has been gradually reduced more and more, and now this.

@@L333gokIt is, but only because they are running down the NHS. This has been part of the Tory plan since coming into office 13 years ago. Hunt and Andrew Lansey even wrote the book on how to do it. Run it down until the tipping point comes. People who can afford to, take out private health insurance and leave the NHS as a last resort for those who can’t afford anything else. Let the NHS wither and die naturally, but they can say they never closed it down.

I had a gum/tooth infection I needed anti biotics for and cos it was dental related only dentists are able to prescribe prescription for it apparently, i was suffering for days trying to get a dentist after being turned away by my local pharmacy and the hospital. I managed to get an emergency appointment with my GP and she broke the rules and prescribed me some antibiotics. So hard to get a basic medicine that you can buy online for £5 (given you have the correct credentials) but it's one of those things you need immediately. its no good having to wait weeks for an appointment.

During COVID, GPs discovered they could get away with not seeing patients. They are very well paid and the majority of them are part time. In my local practice of around 15 GPs only 2 work 4 days a week. The majority work 2. So the idea that there is a shortage of GPs is bunkum. There's a shortage of GP HOURS. To get an appointment, even over the phone, at our practice, you have to make a first automated contact over the internet. This contact asks you a host of general questions which are in any case on your medical records before you ever get to specifics about what you want an appointment for. As for pharmacists, this is probably the wrong time to introduce such an initiative, given the issues around so-called physicians' assistants. The suggestion that pharmacists know more about medication than some medics is correct, but refers especially to pharmacoligical composition and drug interaction. Critically, pharmacists are not trained in diagnosis. In order adequately to prescribe for 7 conditions, they will need to be trained in differential diagnosis - the exclusion of other conditions with similar presentations. Nurse practitioners have been working in GP clinics and in specialities for many years, but as well as working to specific protocols have access to advice from medical practitioners on site. You won't get that in your local Boots. And all this at a time of unprecedented missed and late diagnoses because our Government response to COVID was based on a demonstratedly incorrect statistical analysis and prediction which resulted in inappropriate approaches to protecting the vulnerable, avoidable deaths, and the destruction of our economy. Oops.

Since Covid, doctors surgeries have now become no go areas and many are difficult to even get to see your own GP. You might be lucky and get someone to ring you but not often. So let’s change the way they are paid. Pay should be linked to the number of patients they see.

Oh yeah, pharmacists only have 5 years training, you do realise you can’t learn about drugs without knowing about the human body. These are fairly simple conditions that pharmacists have been diagnosing them for decades, only to tell the patient they need a script from the GP, for them to return 2 hours later with the exact same thing the pharmacist knew they needed. Anything they can’t deal with, they’ll just refer as necessary anyway. The real problem is how under pressure pharmacies are under, I’m not sure how it’s going to happen, there is only one pharmacist in each pharmacy and every single thing has to go through them!

On average it takes me 20-30 minutes, sometimes more, to pick up my meds from Boots Chemist in Lincolnshire due to the amount of people collecting their meds too. The pharmacist is just too busy to be treating patients. I know he will if he can fit you in, but I can't see him doing that if all the doctors patients are now going to turn up in the shop. Once recently, they ran out of 10mcg tablets, I asked him to give me two 5mcg but he was not allowed to and I had to go back to the Dr to get an updated prescription! Louth where I live is growing at a really fast rate, yet they are reducing the local hospital departments and not building any new Doctor surgeries, surely that can not continue this way. Our nearest A&E is in Grimsby 25 miles or Lincoln 30 miles.
