I really hate that you need a car to do anything in this country. I was talking with a friend who was raised in Istanbul. He had a corner store and a bakery down the street. When I thought about my child hood (suburbs) I never got to a store w/o a car. Also the summers before I could drive were awful because I was in a neighborhood 10 miles away from the neighborhood where all my friends were
Oh yes, very common in Europe to have corner grocery stores and bakeries. Also, patisseries, those are another level than America's patisseries, and much more common. European cities tend to be real cities, while america is suburbia central with an often weak excuse for a downtown. Granted, you go to the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, etc), and it becomes more like America with spread out stores and takes about a mile to get to the closest grocery store.
As long as many insist on “compassion” for criminals and the mentally ill, most of us will continue to prefer having metal cages around us. Car lobbyists don’t need to do a thing.
McDonald's having 2 lanes changed nothing since there's never more than one person taking orders at any given time. The one and only person is going to get the order on the lane next to you, then once done with it, will take your order.
That’s actually not true. They sometimes do have more than one (sometimes not on site) but majority they only have one person taking orders, two lanes and two menus speed up the process as you don’t lose that time between when one person places the order and the next driver moves up, looks at the menu and considers what they are ordering, than places the order, then moves out of the spot to the pick window. That has to be at least 90 seconds per customer saved so if you are the 6th person to arrive in line, that saves you at least 4 minutes maybe 5-6 min.
I like the irony of the city council member talking about the risks of getting hit by a car and drive-thrus and his previous traumatic experience, just as it cuts to the host driving while filming and holding her Chick-Fil-A milkshake 😂
Chick-fil-A’s latest drive-thrus are state of the art. Two lanes, each manned by an employee, who takes your order on a tablet, and takes your payment. Then, your two lanes feed into one, with a second “spare” lane on the right side of your car. If your order is smaller than the car in front of you and your order is ready sooner, the employee stationed outside the drive-thru food delivery window will deliver it to your car, and you can exit using the spare lane, which speeds up the whole drive-thru. But how do they know who is who? They ask for your name when you place the order, and they also note the color and model of your car. And as much as I’m not a fan of mixing Christianity and business, Chick-fil-A’s employees are unfailingly polite, and usually smiling. McDonald’s and In-N-Out should take notice of this huge improvement in drive-thru operation.
Portillos has had employees in the drive thru line taking your order, and others bringing your food out for years. They just put a number tag on your window like at the deli.

They removed the walk-up window many years ago for a reason that I simply can't understand.
They don't do this because it's more efficient to drive through than walk in, they do it because it creates a disconnect between you and the customer service. If they make a mistake you are less likely to wait in line again compared to dining in, similarly once you are in a drive through line you are often "boxed in" by curbs and other cars so you can't change your mind if they are taking too long.

They will never be able to totally eliminate walk in service at fast food or else they will get people walking up to the drive through window trying to order. During COVID some places in easily walked distances to apartments had this issue constantly, people wanted to just walk over vs driving so they were walking up to the drive through and getting refused service until they raised a stink.
In America a "Drive In" is a place to stay in your car while watching movies. It is a huge parking area with a giant screen where you tune into a radio station for the audio. There is also a building for buying snacks and using the restroom. Not many of them around anymore but they were huge back in the early days of cars like when the fast food restaurants were taking off in the 50's and 60's. I watched Rambo 3 at one when I was a kid with my brother and parents.
while someone already mentioned the movie theater use of the term the USA also had and in a few places still has drive in restaurants where you pull up and you get served at your car and eat there. "Car Hop" service is what its called also. That is why we have the term drive through/thru, That indicated you pulled up and got food and hit the road again. So yes those old movies where you saw people eating in the car and getting waited on at the car was a real thing and technically still exists if you have a "Sonic Drivein" nearby when in the USA.
Waiting in the in-and-out drive thru line is an IQ test. I park and walk in and get my food and leave before anyone in the drive thru line gets to the pay window.
I dislike how portion sizes have went up, but not matching the price. Sure you might get 10-15% more food but the price went up 80% so mentally it seems like you pay more to get more. Also I’ve been cutting back on food and wanting smaller portion sizes, so I can eat less more often, but routinely I feel like it’s always a bite or so too much. Must certainly help their margins with a great volume of product being sold every time
