    To get really dirty micarta (oil, grease, etc,) clean without using heavy solvents i highly recommend Dawn dush soap and dollar store toothbrushes 👌 the toothbrush helps clean out the pores without being stiff enough to damage the micarta and the Dawn has degreasers to break everything down and make it easier to remove.

    • @loyalegroup3929
      @loyalegroup3929 3 роки тому +3

      I'll second the "Dawn dish soap" thing. I wash my knives (*and touch-up the edge) after every use. Dawn draws the hand oils from the Micarta scales, and gets 'em looking brand new. Your mileage may vary... 👍

    • @sirsir9665
      @sirsir9665 2 роки тому +4

      Dawn actually breaks down Oil and Grease so it's ideal for cleaning knives. Same reason they use it on Ducks in oil spills. Fun Fact it will also break down the oils from hot peppers or pepper spray as well, it's good to use if you get it on skin.

Beyond that I suppose technically no, it won't actually change or repair it in any way, just remove gunk.

Is a leather belt good ? What to do if your leather sheath gets wet ? Can I RIT dye my Wild Pig Hunter micarta black ? Great Video guys. Love your knives !

      I used to love Ballistol until I discovered it is mostly mineral oil, and pure mineral oil is not just non-toxic, it is ediable and less inexpensive. Ballistol may have an advantage on firearms I am not aware of. But on knives, a gallon of mineral oil is good for all my knives and I can slice food without a care. Not only that, one gallon is good for a lifetime. (I use it on folders too)

    SCALES!!! ffs! And a mild soap and water along with a nail brush works just fine. And it is okay to remove the "SCALES" before cleaning them. But people if you are that worried over some dirty "SCALES" then you will most likely fall over and die when that crappy powder coat wears off. And that is of course if you do not remove it on purpose. Use a blade in wood with powder coat and you will soon understand why.
    Also remember. Any oils or wax you use on your scales may also cause a rather slippery when wet situation.
    And you do not need to purchase a knife that is a quarter of an inch thick to be a hard use knife. Not if the proper steel or heat treatments are done right!
    Heck if you like the blades that Tops knives have in their line up then may I suggest a KaBar Becker BK series. It is about the same thickness. They actually survive most torture tests better than a Tops and cost way less than a Tops.
    I have given Tops a real chance in life. They have never really done well for me. But then again I am not a weekend warrior using my knives in a campsite a short distance away to a convenience store. The blades I own spend months in Alaska in such places as Kodiak Island and just outside of Denali and many other remote locations . I can not take a blade that is a quarter of an inch thick and needs serious work to keep it usable in these environments...

      Don’t use anything. It’s already impervious to water. I don’t know why they mention oiling micarta, it’s not like wood. It’s already completely impregnated with epoxy. There is no need to coat micarta, all it will do is make the handle have less traction.

      @@BryceKimball7.3 … I don’t know that it’s necessary to oil Micarta handles but they certainly are not impervious. I recently bought a folder that didn’t have a smooth opening so I sprayed a little gun oil on the pivot and let it sit, blade open and pointing down overnight. The small amount of oil that I figured would run down the blade actually wicked up the scales better than half way. After the first day of light use and carrying it in the my pocket the oil wasn’t even detectable anymore. I wear gloves at work so I couldn’t say if it felt oily but at days end in a bare hand it didn’t.

    How can the black river wash coating be removed? I have a new Wild Pig Hunter that started rusting the second day I had it. I used steel wool to remove it and put a light coat of Rem Oil on it and when I checked a few days later it is still rusting. My other Tops knife does not have this problem. I reckon I will just remove the coating and give it a patina. Not impressed with QC. The knife hasn't been used, just handled.
