      @raaid22 5 років тому +19

      Well it's different. In les mis she is French but there is no mention of eponines ethnic make up. The engineer is described as euraison. If they wanted a white guy then they should just change the character to a white guy. Trying to make him look Asian is no different from black face and unacceptable.

    • @diannebdee
      @diannebdee 5 років тому +5

      @@raaid22 Thing is The Engineer was "born" during the heat of French Colonialism in Indochina. The fact he was bi-racial as was mentioned above made it understandable why he was denounced by both the Vietnamese and the French. That's what Miss Saigon was trying to say, particularly with the Bui Doi song. "Half-breeds" can't expect to find a "home" in such places where the degree of revulsion for such a result is not only frowned upon, but out right shunned. Without the prosthetics there's no context as to the reason The Engineer was the way he was. I will never forgive New York for making such a stink with Jonathan Pryce over it. He is an actor and that's what actors do, don makeup to project the role they're playing. Black face is acceptable given the proper context. Art is not a place to refrain from depicting history's truths. In fact it is in the art we understand the past to project into the future. All the controversy surrounding this production was disgraceful on Broadway and Actor's Equity. Diversity is great if diversity is the aim. If in this case Cameron MacKintosh wanted to cast Jonathan Pryce and Lea Salonga, as the money behind the production he had the right to do whatever he pleased in the context of the piece. To say he didn't is saying no producer ever has the license to bring their vision to the stage, only what a bunch of picket sign carriers say he can. That's not art, that's production by committee. And let's not forget the ones who were arguing the loudest stood to gain roles that would never be theirs because the creators of the piece created it with the people they chose. I'm looking at you BD Wong and Rosalind Chao.

      i agree.....was lea salonga vietnamese? in hamilton, blacks played white people...when people start questioning, complaining, demanding for political correctness or affirmative action in art, it becomes propaganda...i agree with the producers of miss saigon choosing the actors to play in their creation, it’s their money and idea, if people don’t like it, don’t watch it....the producers were willing to bypass america for their stupid political correctness, and who caved in? america’s political correctness...
      i refuse to watch hamilton because i just can’t visually accept a black person playing a white character, or vice versa....let’s be honest, this tactic was for political reasons rather than art.....there’s no such thing as color blind...if colorblind can be a reason, then go for the whole shabang by casting guys to play girls, start having 69 year old women play Sandy’s part in Grease, start having a 10 year old doing love scenes with a 40 year old (color blind, gender blind, age blind)....

    • @tsotry1842
      @tsotry1842 4 роки тому +11

      @@ServandoWatercolor the roles in Hamilton are inherently built to be played regardless of race. the purpose of Hamilton is to portray American history in a modern light - with modern music and representing the diversity of the modern US. and the story isn't at all racially charged because its focus is upon the determination of Hamilton to build his legacy and how history leaves a legacy behind that impacts our present. so casting a person of any skin color is perfectly fine because the story being told is a story that transcends race.
      on the other hand, Miss Saigon is an inherently Vietnamese story. it's telling a story about Vietnamese people that's meant to show the ruins left behind in Vietnam. and it's racially charged because the way the Vietnamese women are treated by many of the Americans was fueled by racist sentiments. even the Engineer's beliefs regarding his French half in relation to his Vietnamese half exist because of his internalized racism and his idealization of the US. to put a white person in the role of a Vietnamese character is removing Asian representation from a production that tells an Asian story.
      and for your last point, now you're just falling down the slippery slope. don't compare providing representation to historically oppressed groups to sexualizing children. have a good day.

    • @patapon646
      @patapon646 4 роки тому +8

      @@ServandoWatercolor Don't look at these things at a vacuum. Context matters.
      Race has nothing to do with the story of Hamilton while Miss Saigon is a tale of people from two different countries. Mixing up race and culture in Hamilton doesn't change the period authenticity of the story as character's race doesnt change the dynamics.
      Miss Saigon on the other hand has to do with a person from a better off place and culture falling for a girl in a crap place. Changing the race of the Engineer removes the cultural authenticity aspect of him being born in the same country where Kim also lives. It's like if you cast the Engineer as Mexican, that shit dont make sense. Also, Miss Saigon did a worldwide search and they found Lea. FFilipinos are way closer and more authentic culturally and ethnically to vietnamese than the white guy as engineer.

      I think if there was any unfairness or weirdness in the Tony awards that year is there may have been a backlash against backlash against the British Meg-Musical. They were never critical favorites and unfairly condescended to and considered low brow. It lost to the "Will Roger's Follies" which, innovative and cleverly conceived as it was, was a more traditional American style musical. I saw both and liked both for different reasons. The concept, staging and choreography of "Follies" the towering performance of Lea Salonga. I was not blown away by Mr. Pryce nor his big number "American Dream."

    • @PeteCalandra
      @PeteCalandra  3 роки тому +2

      Actually,Lea Salonga and Barry Bernal had main roles when we opened the show. Hinton Battle was cast as John on Broadway and the role was played by a caucasian in the West End. What I think the concern was: The show cost a fortune to mount in 1991. The producer wanted to insure that the show would make the original investment back. By having Pryce, he had a better chance (in his mind) of that happening. Not saying I agree but what the thought was. After the first year (that would be for 9 years out of the 10 years the show ran) the role of the Engineer was played by an Asian. Also the role of Ellen, for a period of time after Liz Callaway left, was also played by an Asian woman. The cast was amazingly diverse on so many levels.
