The story I heard is that players at Gygax's table would often refer to a demon/devil that they were worried about as "You know who" since saying the demon's name could attract its attention. So Gygax created Yeenoghu, who was listening every time the players used his name.

    Yeenoghu was wild when we faced him in 4e, this dude was doing like 60 points of damage a hit and that was pretty basic attacks, his flail was doing over 100 per round. Dude is crazy hard

  • @theprinceofawesomeness

    In my homebrew lore, Yeenoghu was the Gnoll god of the hunt, after an Eldrich war he was the last Gnoll god who remained and he sought power to protect his people and to enact vangence, the easiest way was to become a demon, this warped his mind and made him lose his way, he is still a hunter and god of hunting and gnolls, now he's crule and no longer knows what he's hunting, he no longer care, as long as the hunt is crule, bloody, and glorius

    Thank you for putting Yeenoghu and the Gnolls in the Spotlight.
    They are all some of my favorites in DnD.
    I must ask.
    Are there friendly Gnolls in DnD or are they all driven by Yeenoghu‘s unending Hunger?
    Are the Gnolls that spawned from the Hyenas the same Creature or different beings entirely?

    • @vileluca
      @vileluca 6 місяців тому +4

      Before 5th edition yes, there were gnolls' who were not worshippers of Yeenoghu, usually who followed some other god.
      5th edition lore changed how Gnolls reproduce and made them fiends.

    • @vileluca
      @vileluca 6 місяців тому +7

      Also there are some gnolls you can find in modules who are "friendly". One is Kurr, who's friendly because he's actually contracted a type of madness that makes him feel regret for those he's slain.

      In some games, the hunger that they all feel can be somewhat controlled, like a vampire or werewolf, so they still feel it, but they can control it for extended periods of time.

    I do kinda like Yeenoghu. He’s not exactly complicated and unlike some other demon lords he’s not about scheming persay. He’s just about the slaughter of his enemies and feeding a void that can never truly be filled. A bit of a kindred spirit with Khorne now that I think about it

  • @mrquackadoodlemoo

    I adore the Gnolls and Yeenaghu. Their actions and goals are simple and straightforward, "kill and eat, eat what you kill, give whatever is left to the creator, repeat"
    Their primordial starvation is so fun to roleplay and I love just how simple their evil is. There is no grand scheme, there are no ulterior motives, and there is no long term plan set by higher-ups.
    Just eat, kill, and offer what you are and killed to your god.
    I love the whole thing so much that I made what could be an entire campaign out of just fighting these savages off.
    The official art for Yeenaghu is stupid.
    He doesn't need a silly flail, he is a creator deity older than time and more primal than Aboleths, he shouldn't have some crappy stick with 3 rocks on the end of it.
    He should be foreboding, monstrous, and, above all else, a savage animal.
