These newer banks should never be one’s only account anyway. With cheques I just scan into my high street bank’s app and transfer. Really straightforward.
I still have both accounts but use Starling as my primary account where I receive my salary and keep cash I don't invest because it is safer and more reliable bank, imo. However, Monzo is a better day to day spending account of its app's budgeting features.
I actually couldn’t agree with you more! Starling certainly feels more reliable and secure, I’m even about to replace my Halifax current account and use Starling as my main account. - Jonny
I have both Monzo and Starling, and in my opinion, Starling is clear! I use cash deposits at the post office quite a lot. I also need a lot of spending pots, and the max number of 20 which Monzo provides is no where near enough! Monzo's paid subscription accounts might be better, but if you're comparing the FREE accounts, then Starling is better by miles. Also, and let's not even talk about ATM withdrawals... in UK and also if you like to travel and withdraw cash abroad, Monzo cannot compare to Starling either!
Thanks for your insight mca808! I totally agree, I actually recently closed down my Monzo Premium account, and while Starling isn't my main account I do use it for weekend international transactions and of course ATM withdrawals! ^Jonny
I like Monzo tbh knew about it for a few years then made my account this year February, and as someone who isn't necessarily good with numbers it really does help me to see it all very clearly, espically with the catagorise. To me the Merchants didn't seem as useful and sounded very confusing, but who knows I may open a starling bank, as there current account seem to be doing very well which they have won awards for too.
Hey Little Lem! Thanks for your insight that's really interesting. They are both so equal across all of these categories it was genuinely very difficult to award each one (except the final one). I do like how creative Monzo is with their notifications, I've had some interesting ones recently about spending, and it can act as a nice reminder that perhaps I'm spending too much. Let me know if you go ahead and open a Starling account, would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers! ^Jonny
Hi Rhys, thanks for the clarification, unfortunately I can't always get it right, especially when there's so much research and information to digest when making these videos. ^Jonny
Hey! Thanks for sharing your perspective, it’s always interesting to hear. I agree too, Starling gives me this sense of safety that you get from a traditional bank where Monzo (especially with their financial worries) feels more like a secondary account. Almost like Revolut? ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom I wouldn't use revolut as they aren't a proper bank and not protected by the FSCS. I do like their feature set though with all the in app trading you can do with them.
Just a question, does this mean I can send money from my HSBC (UK) account to my monzo account and if I travel to France I can pay with my monzo card each odd amount without any 'non-starling' fees?
Yeah for sure. A LOT of people do this because they want to maintain a main bank account with a more established bank like HSBC. You can just BACS your Monzo account from your HSBC account and then use your Monzo card to spend money in France. I'm sure that'll be better than using HSBC. Although I can't be sure without knowing which account you have with them. Thanks ^Jonny
I am moving to London next month. I feel that I would be best setting up both accounts and using one for salary and bills, keeping the other for Day/day payments. Would you suggest revolut for international use over these two?
Great, thanks Kevin. The benefits of Monzo & Starling over Revolut are relatively minimal, except in the UK you get FSCS protection - but because you're in Ireland with Revolut you do have DGS (up to €100,000). So instead of waiting till you arrive in London and get your residency, why not open a Revolut account now and when you're in the UK receive your salary into your Revolut GBP account. If you were to travel home then you could easily exchange GBP for EUR to spend. Although if you do this, ensure to do it during the week to avoid any fees (obviously within your fee-free limit). Unless you have a really compelling reason or use case I don't think opening an account with either Monzo or Starling is necessary for you. ^Jonny

@@UnhipSleetProductions they're certainly a good option for travel. Their free account uses Mastercard's FX rates and charges no fixed fees on transactions. Hey Ryan, that's a shame. I did read that you may be able to open the account again after 30 days by e-mailing them (help@monzo.com). But it also does say that "There is no guarantee that we will be able to re-open your account when you request it." - I hope you manage to sort it, good luck.. ^Jonny
the color of the Monzo card has no luck for the user and the quality of the card is like machined plastic. Using this card is vulnerable to Photoshop. Is this bank a bank for LGBT people? The color of the card says it all 😂
I disagree Donovan. When I selected my choice of winner for each category I never considered the benefits or services of either companies paid accounts. I should know as I researched and wrote the script 😂 - Jonny

at 4:39 you said that Starling is capped at 6 saving spaces when this isn't true, I talked to customer support and the limit is about 20 saving spaces
Hi Rhys, thanks for the clarification, unfortunately I can't always get it right, especially when there's so much research and information to digest when making these videos. ^Jonny
I think the features on monzo edge it slightly and feel Monzo is the better spender card. Starling I feel would be best for a main account.
