Professional animator here. The mistake you made was trying to make full completed drawings before you had the motion of the creature nailed down. Try animating the creature as a stick figure, or guesture drawing first and getting the motion moving on that correct before you attempt to draw the anatomy and design of the creature. It's done this way so that you can go through 100's of iterations of stick figures and quick fast drawings before being invested in any one drawing. A lot of professional animators don't show the stick figure or gesture drawing step because it doesn't look flashy enough.
You lost me at mistake... I'm like not good at art but not horrible, don't know what the hell rendering is, don't know color theory, pretty good at following a reference drawing (without tracing cause who tf does that anymore except for 12 yo kids who think it makes them an artist. hobbyist animator here! this is an awesome start! it's really good, you made sure to also have the body move and not just the legs, which is important for a walk cycle, especially a trot or run cycle. if and as you keep animating, your animations will naturally become a lot smoother. i won't give you advice unless you want me to, but just know that this is a super good start!
THIS IS AMAZING !! i genuinely would believe youd been studying animation for a few weeks/months if it wasnt in the title! i love the design too! chunky little guy theyre so cute! super cool to see the process you went through as well btw i could see where each frame was sort of thought through and the problem solving you had especially in the beginning to get the movements right was incredible. please keep doing animation!! if you want to pursue it youll do amazingly
As someone who's been learning animation for 3 years now, I have to say this ain't half bad for a start. I myself haven't attempted a quadrupedal walk cycle yet so the best advice I can give is to study references for how four legged animals move, and also just a general animation advice to be more rough with your drawings. Clean-up and details should come after the motion has been properly captured.
I'm a not good but not horrible artist who's not aware of what color theory or rendering is and I tried to to animate a furry's tail completely from scratch without tutorials.... It was NOT good... 😭 I've done many other animations on flipaclip but they all suck as well, though that was older times... I may try to get back into it :3
I love big reptiles! He's just a lil guy! Wanna give him a smooch on his snoot! I love when you're getting down the legs and switching between drawings, he looks like he's doing a little tippy tap dance. So cute! I'm a writer, not an artist and DEFINITELY not an animator, but I think you did an amazing job for your first try!
That's EXTREMELY impressive for having little knowlegde on animation, and not to mention it being your first time. This turned out quite amazing in my opinion 👏
This is a truly awesome first walk cycle! It's been 2 years since I made my first animation and still, after learning a lot about animation I struggle to do walk cycles!you are very, VERY TALENTED!! And your oc is so cool :3
For having little to no knowledge of animation, you did remarkably well! It's hard to do walk cycles for four legged creatures, especially something like alligators/crocs since it's not everyone's go to and can be difficult to find references or tutorials on, so I applaud you for that. If you are intrested in some constructive criticism, (if not, totally cool ignore this part lol) I could be wrong but what I think you may benefit from is marking out your key poses first and then doing the in-betweens between then rather than straight-ahead animation (this is called pose to pose), it helps make things a little smoother and less clunky essentially outlining where things are going to go, also helps you see what parts are and aren't working like how there is a little bit of a stutter when it loops. Your color and consistency with the drawings and markings are incredible, it's really hard to keep that consistent with little markings like what you do for your lineart for wrinkles and curves and you do it seamlessly, like I don't notice it at all and it's not jumping all over the place so really well done with that! There is a bit of jumping with the back thigh's spots but that's expected considering that area is getting a lot of rotation and still looks really smooth in general. With the legs, there are two plains essentially, ones in the foreground (closest to the camera) and the ones behind them, the ones behind them you could potentially raise the floor a little to make it appear more 3D and less flat, but still I think that's an extra detail and your animation is just fine as it is and works brilliantly. Overall, really REALLY well done, for someone who has 'little to no knowledge', I think it's solid as hell and really well done. Amazing work! :)
This is SO cute. I am also a beginner animator (kind of, I've practiced somewhat over the years.) I've definitely learned thru trial and error how much easier it is to just draw the stick figures first and kinda map out the motion of the subject before going to town on details. Hope to see more from you, and happy animating :)
Absolutely love the design. Very nice walking cycle for having no prior animation experience. I know from my own attempts how long even a few seconds can take to sketch out, so glad to see it turned out well!
It looks great! One thing you should keep in mind is to not make the frames perfectly spaced out and equal - if for example, you draw 2 far apart frames for the leg swinging forward and then 4 close together frames for the foot making contact with the ground and stepping down, it'll look really smooth and like there's more weight to the foot!
I like to think about how walking or running animations are just like a person's mind. Like.. if someone is thinking th mind is walking, but if the person is in full-blown panic mode, the brain is running.
This type of trot looks like he's a playful who likes music. With a bit of smoothing it'd be great for him as he's about to break out into song. Example: The very brief dance/walk Baloo does in jungle book when about to sing Bare necessities. Little things like this are expressive and characteristic, which can actually be difficult to achieve in animation. Another thing, this looks like it's coming out of a pounce and gaining speed to engage in a persuit of prey with a bit of smoothing and adding a few more frames. Nice work over wall! Keep practicing! I hate walk cycles :'D Also, try doing a rough animation to nail down the basic movements.

Nope! But I'm considering joining some time :D
AAWEW LOOKIT HIMMM ❤️❤️
Wait, *this* is what you do with "little to no knowledge on animation"?
I don't believe that for a nanosecond.
I Basically mean I don’t have much experience with animation. I usually just make comic-like stuff and have only actually attempted animation maybe 4 times in the past 2 years (including this)
I guess I just wasn't clear enough, but yeah

Good job!
