What's amazing is that her parents are only in their 30s and they aren't musical people. Her dad in an interview said she had no influence from them, that she loved to sing from when she was little and that at one point she started watching James Brown and other old school rockers on youtube and the rest is history. To answer your question, all available biographical information indicates that her parents were supportive but had little to do with her musical choices and journey. She earned her own money for voice lessons by busking on English streets since age 10 (the other street performers did not appreciate her being around--she got all the attention). Her father is on record saying he feared her getting famous because she would grow up and not live in their same small town; she wants to move to America, where people "get" her (her classmates used to make fun of her singing and dance moves). If there was any guiding influence it probably was UA-cam where she saw James Brown, Janis Joplin, et al. and just self-generated from there. Her voice teacher, Julie Mills, I think, was a big help to Courtney, who is just a precocious phenom!

She says that she heard it on U Tube and fell in love with it. She does not like regular pop music but loves the flow of soul. No one in her family is musically inclined except for her dad's relative Cilla Black. Anyone in England knows her. Her producer was Brian Epstein of Beatles fame.
This girl is great and you definitely need to check out her new cover of "Sucker" (by the Jonas Brothers). It is lit! It is rare that any cover can challenge the original when it is still so fresh.
Beats the original! Courtney has the "It" factor only the greatest performers have. Her coming 1st album should seal the deal.

Courtney never lays out the whole story as she in person tends to the reticent side. Courtney loves to sing, and has gotten lessons to be better so she is a bit of a perfectionist. The key seems to be her need to earn money to pay for lessons also noting her father was said to be unemployed so performing for money was important. How to do that? She developed this style as a result starting from singing some soul like Etta James and getting into high energy performers like little Richard and James Brown. James Brown early on used the whole stage and Courtney latched onto that, and she says ' everything changed '.
Her favorite movie was Cadillac Records, which I had never heard of. Beyonce played Etta James, with several early black performers characterized such as Chuck Berry and Howling Wolf Smith.
